I would like to try out a longbow but I do not want to spend a fortune in case I do not like it. I was looking for a good Hill-style or reflex/deflex bow for under $400. I have my eye on the Bear Montana and the Maddog Prairie Predator. What are your thoughts on those bows or are there any others you would recommend?
Thanks in advance.
I think the sky Trophy starts around $350.00. I've killed plenty of deer with mine, a great bow for all levels.
I was at a Cabelas this week end, I shot a Montana. My friends have both the Prairie Predator and the Sky. Both are better than the Montana. If your draw is under 28" or if you may prefer a shorter bow, I would suggest the Prairie Predator.
I draw 26".
Mad Dog all the way get off this for mum thread, leave it behind and get it done.
All you're going to get here is the best bow in the world owned by everybody else
Mad Dog Prairie Predator ordered! Thanks for all the responses.
Wow!!
That didn't take much convincing
I'm sure you'll be happy. I've heard nothing but great things about Mikes bows.
Bear Montana all day long not to say that mad dog isn't great but I've ruined more knock tips with my Montana than any thing I've ever shot ! Good luck with your new bow SEMPER FI brother
I'm sure you will love your new Maddog. But the Montana is a very fine bow as well...I love mine.
Dang, you ordered before I had a chance to tell you about the absolute perfect bow!
Oh well, maybe next time.
Thanks everyone. It was really one of those scenarios where you knew what you wanted to do beforehand and you just needed someone to push you into doing it.
I love my prairie predator. Call mike at maddog archery up and he will take care of you.
Oh I see you already have! Good choice
Oh I see you already have! Good choice
Omega Longbows! Absolutely will not beat them for the price! They will out shoot most bows 2 and 3 times their price.
You'll love the Maddog. I own 2 and both are excellent bows. Just dont be afraid to tell Mike EXACTLY what you want. He can do it all, so talk with him.
Good choice going with the Maddog!
I used to own a Montana. It's a good bow but it wasn't for me. I couldn't adapt to a traditional longbow grip. Then I got a Bodnik Slick Stick. My wife liked it and claimed it as her's (She draws to just under 25") and I got myself another (I draw to about 28.5"). The Slick stick is a little less expensive, better quality craftsmanship, lifetime warranty and to us at least, a more accurate shooter, that of course is a personal preference. I sold the Montana a few weeks ago, I really wanted to like it but the grip killed my wrist.
Tom at Kimsha Archery might have some bows that are in that price range, just not sure on specifications. He is a sponsor here, and you can see his work in the classifieds. Phone: 301-934-5234

I have predator. Like it a lot and it can actually possess you. Semper Fi
Maddog all the way !!!
You could buy a fine used longbow for that, keep an eye on the classifieds.
for just a little more money, I would recommend Mike at 7 lakes archery. He build a great bow that performance matches more expensive ones.
Thanks for the replies. I am set on the Mad Dog, but I will check up on the other recommendations. I know I won't stop with just one bow.
The best longbow for the price...maybe any price, that i've ran across are the Kanati's....you can't buy a new custom for $400, but Jason does advertise stock bows for close to that price and you see one occasionally on the classified's in that price range...
The blanks at 7 Lakes Archery are an outstanding value.
Another vote for 7 Lakes!
Can't beat an omega ..Kegan makes a fine bow
