Title: Stiff Spine and Broadhead weight?
Post by: Tree342 on April 28, 2017, 10:52:00 PM
I just got my first longbow. Its a LH 50# bow and Im drawing about 29 inches. I got a carbon arrow spine test kit (4 different spine unfletched arrows) to get it tuned.

I havent had alot of time to play with it but it seems that all but the 600 spine arrows are to stiff for it. The uncut 500 spine arrows with 200 grain points are showing just a hair stiff.

Does this sound unusual? According to the arrow spine charts I should be using stiffer spines. Would it be better to use slightly heavier points to weaken the 500 spine and stick with 500 spine uncut arrows? Or should I use lighter points and cut the 600 spine arrows to the correct "tune". I will be using this bow to deer hunt with and Im clue-less about what weight broadhead to use. Oppinions seem to range from 100gr. to 300gr.
Thanks!

If that bow is 50@28 and you are drawing 29, that means your actual draw weight would be right about 53#. Those .600's should be too weak. You should be able to make the .500's and even a .400 work with adjustments to length and front end weight.

Thanks is it true that brace height can affect how the arrow tunes? It may need adjusting but its not too far off. And what weight broadhead would you recommend? Is 250gr to heavy for a 50# bow?

Where the sight window is cut relative to center shot is a HUGE factor in choosing what spine arrow shaft you use with a particular point weight.  Bows with sight windows cut before centershot generally need weaker spines and sight windows cut past centershot generally need stiffer spines ceteris paribus.

John H nailed it. If the bow is not cut to center then a weaker spine is what's needed.

600 sounds to weak. If your running 200grain heads than you should be able to use 400-500s. But John h is tight about the shelf. That makes a huge difference sometimes

Thanks guys. Turns out my foam target was giving me a false reading. When shot though paper 500 spine with a 200gr point is just about perfect with an uncut 32.5" arrow. Now if only I could get it to stop shooting nock high....

Nock high can be a sign of a weak shaft.
