Title: Pre-Finished Shafts?
Post by: tradrookie93 on April 25, 2017, 09:30:00 PM
Who makes good, affordable pre-finished shafts? I currently shoot carbon and want to try some wood shafts. Also what spine should I be looking at? I shoot a 60# @28" K-Mag recurve that I draw to 25-26" and I'd like to tip the arrows with 200-250 grain points. I searched on here and couldn't quite find the answers I was looking for. Thanks

You're probably drawing 55# at your draw length. Given the heavy point weight you want to use, will probably need wood shafts in the 60-65# or 65-70# range cut to about 27 inches BOP.  Might start with a test kit from 3-Rivers.

The initial finish put on the shaft is simple enough to do.  Doing it yourself opens the door to more shaft options.

Just fine sand with 320 or 400 and wipe on three or four coats of minwax water based poly.  Use some super fine steel wool between coats.  You can do a stain before the poly too.

I have some 70-75 vintage Acme Premium shafts that are prefinished. Top quality shafts.

Pm me if interested.

I have a draw length about the same as yours, but I like loner arrows, 29". Most of my bows shoot arrows approximately at the stated draw weight of the bow. However, I generally use 125 or 145 grain points. For example, my 50# bow and my 53# bows like 50-55# spined wooden arrows. Since you like heavy points, that will need to be accounted for. Oddly, when I have used shorter 27" arrows, they just don't seem to work well for me. I think Orion's suggestion would be a good starting point.

I have a lot of pre-finished Acmes in the mid sixty poundage range.  I will hand spine before shipping. Pm if interested.

Jacob, no offense but the difference between a 25" and 26" draw is a whole spine range. Have someone assist you in properly measuring your draw length before you buy any shafts. And this is strictly personal opinion but my tinkering with Cedar, Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir indicates they are more adversely affected by really heavy point weights than carbon.
