Title: Hawaii Billy Goat stuff.
Post by: Msturm on April 11, 2017, 11:50:00 PM
A while ago I posted about a billy goat hunt in very steep country. It was rifle season and I had to wear bright orange, but I got in close enough with my Stalker FXT to down a decent billy. That was about a year ago.  The photo below is pretty poor (point and shoot camera in fading light on a timer) but you can see the elevation change and it gives you an idea of the goat. Notice  the bright orange under my armpit?  Like I said, rifle season.

That was about a year ago I believe.

So a last week while I was looking over these pictures talking about goat hunting with a bow and arrow with some of my students, I realized that I stashed the head of that goat in an ant infested stump way up in a steep valley and I figured the caveman euro mount ought to be about done.

So I grabbed my bow and a couple arrows, cuz what the hell, and headed back into the mountains to grab that skull, hopefully the rodents didn't eat the horns.  As I grabbed my bow and quiver I realized that the quiver I am using is made from the hide of that same goat!

Pretty cool I think.

I saw some goats but couldn't make it happen. Anyway, I looked for that stump for about an hour before I found it. It was ready, or close enough for me to get it into the house without upsetting my fiancee with the smell. So i put it on the Lanai to wait until I got some time to deal with it.  Here it is after coming off the mountain.

Looking at it now its not a bad Spanish billy for this island. Won't hold a candle to the Kauai, Big Island, or Maui billies though.

This afternoon I had some spare time. I used a 5 gallon bucket full of water and sprayed 3 layers each of white, egg shell white, primer grey, and flat black  Krylon into the water. I pulled the horns off and dipped the skull. Cleared the water with a cardboard chunk and pulled the skull out. It came out pretty nifty. So then I took a soft wire brush and cleaned up the horns, then used a toothbrush and dish soap. I set skull and horns in the sun to dry for a couple hours.

After everything was dry i superglued some teeth, fixed a nose bone (should have done this before dipping) and mounted the horns. I sprayed everything with a couple light coats of clear Krylon. It didn't come out too bad. I snapped a couple quick photos.

Nice.

Say, my brother in law is Thomas Sturm from West Virginia. Any relation? Do not hear that last name much. Just wondering.

Mike
Great post.

BTW   I thought I worked in some mountainous terrain in Alaska (Army), but also trained in Hawaii.  Those  mountains were butt kickers!!!

Thanks everyone. I will be back up next week. hopefully have a nice story to tell and a nice full freezer.

Unfortunately I can't take credit for the flint arrow heads.

Roy and others, yeah those mountains are steep. I like them a lot. The higher you go the less people you deal with. I try to get as high and steep as I can safely.  I love hunting with a stickbow. Great fun!

Oh man, I love it.

I hope it doesn't work out like the pig skulls I've done on my own [boiled, scraped, buried]

as mine eventually leach a yellowish oily substance and they start smelling.

Next time I'm sending my skulls off to a beetle box.
