Dust off your noggins! There was a company in late 80's that produced a deer grunt when you raked a wooden dowel over a hollow wooden dowel with notches? really sounded good. it's killing me to make one. Anybody got one or picture of one?
I think my sister has one. They use them in music class at school
I all seriousness, I know what you're talking about. Sounds like a neat project.
I've got one, some where, made out of deer antle hollow out with ridges filed in it and you rub a dowel over the ridges works fine.
Something like this?
..these were homemade obviously..but maybe along the lines you were thinking?

Production started in 1985 and is still available.
