Title: Name that wood?
Post by: Hillbilly Bowyer on October 31, 2007, 08:58:00 PM
I sent some wood to Gail Martin out in Washington and received this bow in the mail a couple of weeks ago. I know the limbs are osage, but can someone tell me what the riser wood is?  :knothead:

It might be a walnut, but not American. The Shedua I buy does`nt have that reddish tint to it.

I don't believe it's Shedua or Walnut.  The colors look alot like Tulipwood.

The redish color and grain looks kinda like bubinga.Hard to tell though from the picture.Nice looking bow.

It could be bubinga alright, although most bubinga that I've seen has a tighter grain pattern and not much if any yellow.  Pretty bow!

Yeah I know it sounds a little weird-me not knowing what type of wood it is. I met Gail and Dan at the P&Y convention in PA and of course the topic of bows & wood came up. I sent them a few peices of osage and Gail asked Martin's bowyer to make up the bow for me.

It's a direct copy of The Stick, except the limbs are VA osage. It also has graphite tip overlays and the nice looking handle, whatever it is. 50# @ 28" I draw 29 1/2 so that's enough for me! Gail and Dan are great guys and I can't thank them enough for this gift. I asked for the stick model because I think it's more "old school".

Israel, the painting is an original by a now deceased local artist from VA's Shenandoah Valley named John Chumley. I guess he was a fairly accomplished artist. We purchased part of his estate from his widow and again the conversation about bowhunting came up. I guess most of the Chumley fans didn't really connect with the subject matter of this piece, so it's now on the wall in the Den of Death  :)   :)  His widow says her son harvested his first deer, and the father was so taken by the visual of the deer hanging in the old mill that he painted this.

Here's a link to the B&B accross the street from us. This and our property used to be his place-if you're bored and need some reading material.

Thanks for the help folks!

If it's really hard, it could be bocote. Colours aren't always accurate from cameras & from comp. monitors.

Nice bow!

OK I finally was able to reach Larry Hatfield out at Howatt and he says the riser is ovankol. Man what a great guy to talk to. He made me a really nice bow and I can't thank him enough.
