I spent some time in the Marines with reconnaissance and infantry units, so I thought I'd put that experience to use and develop a calisthenics workout program to get into shape for the fall hunting season. I still hunt some thick cover and swamps, so the exercises below mainly focus on developing strength and endurance for that kind of slow, methodical hunting -- the kind that requires you to balance in awkward positions and crawl on all fours under heavy cover.
I hope you guys get something out of it. Feel free to adjust the sets and reps as needed for your fitness level. The workout below is for those of us needing to get back into shape. (See youtube for examples of exercises and proper execution.) I work shift work, so I try to complete the workouts in under 20 minutes before work. Add reps as you progress every week. No rest between sets to build endurance.

Sunday
Rest, as the Lord would have us do.
Were you a DI? Sounds like the daily 7 plus on steroids. Good workout plan
Hahaha! Basically, it is the daily seven plus on steroids. I was not a DI. Just worked with a lot of force recon and snipers. I left bear crawls out of the workout, but if you really wanted to get jacked you could bear crawl 25 yards in between each of the bodybuilders or burpees instead of sprinting or walking.
Semper Fi man. What unit? I was with 3/8 kilo
Semper Fi. I loved 8th Marines. Best regiment in the Corps when I was in. I was in 2nd Recon Battalion, 2nd Marine Division and 1st Marine Division HQ (Ramadi, Iraq) and did some work with a Special Forces Bravo Team (also in Iraq). I was a secret squirrel.
I got tired after reading the first paragraph. I need a nap.
BOHO :clapper:
Thank you for your service Sir
Dang, Brian! Sounds like a helluva workout. I log for a living in the same rough @#$ country I hunt in. Carrying nothing but a bow feels like carrying a feather after packing around that extra 20 pounds of Stihl chainsaw all week lol.
I use to work out very faithfully. Today, I walked all the way around the yard twice without my cane. I think the turkeys will be safe from my arrows this spring.
Very good work out routine.
I think a lot of people have trouble sticking to a workout plan because for people like myself, it gets very boring (tedious) very quickly. The only thing I have to comment on is that maxing out (max reps) that often (3X a week) can lead to CNS fatigue/exhaustion very quickly.
I congratulate your ambition and determination to not just get in shape for a hunt but starting a life style.
Good stuff!
I forgot (OAS) I saw this tee shirt for old guys:
Pain is weakness leaving the body, except if your served, then it's probably Arthritis. As an old 03 I fall in that second category. Watch those knees and hip joints!
ahab78.....where you part of the Marines I have been listening to Jocko W. rave about their exploits on his podacast's? Nothing but respect and admiration for anybody that served in that area. THANK YOU!!!!!
Yes, I was in the Marines for eight years. Thank you.
BOHO beat me to it. Of course, being an Army vet, probably wouldn't be allowed to do it anyway.
Serving with the Army in Iraq changed my mind about you guys. Damn fine MP unit escorted our team through some of the nastiest areas in Baghdad and kept it tight the entire mission. Top notch group of guys.
Hey crazynate, I was in 3/8 India from 2008-2011. What years were you in? Semper Fi dudes! I'm from East TN and it's pretty hilly and thick here. Trekking out with your climber and gear and getting set-up definitely will kick your butt if you aren't in decent shape. Can't even imagine how it would be out west! I know several guys that have actually blown their cover from huffing and puffing. I think being in good physical condition can make you a better hunter in that aspect. Especially for us trad hunters. The posted routine is very practical and you can set your own intensity.
You left out mountain climbers too, but I guess burpees replace those, pretty much. OOrah! I think you should have left bear crawls in , they're good prep for that kind of hunting. :)
ahab78 thank you for your service.
I just read an article that stated a HIIT workout 3 times a week with a full body weight training workout 2 times a week may just be the ultimate workout routine. Your workout seems to be a HIIT program. Us older guys over 40 begin to loose muscle and need the weights as well.
I would like a little more clarification on the 8 count bodybuilder ladder 5-1 if possible, you can PM me if you like. Thanks
I am thinking your first workout on Monday, then a full body weight workout (look on the net)Tuesday. Your second workout on Wednesday, full body weight on Thursday. Fri your first workout again or some other HIIT workout to mix it up. I am older so I am going for the whole weekend off.
Thanks for the suggestion comes at a good time. I was trying to come up with a HIIT routine.
That'll do it. Hunting isn't all that strenuous -- even in rough terrain. For me, I stay in shape to keep from sweating or overexerting too much going from place to place so I don't stink it up.
Mine routine is pretty simple. Run 3x per week. Work up to 10-15+ miles on the weekends. Do at least one 20 +/- mile trail run in the mountains during the summer, preferably a month before the season opens. Yosemite is a beautiful place to run and gets me used to high elevations. Mix in some backpacking for fun. That's pretty much overkill for hunting just a few miles in but it keeps me in shape. I get to see some awesome country in the meantime.
My wife got me doing a little yoga, too. It helps my back & upper-body strength. I show up to a class once a week & let the little girls show me just how tough I really am. It's way tougher than the Krav Maga class I was taking!
I stick to my air force training. Run 1.5 miles once a yr. Works for me.

:biglaugh: Nice!
Don't forget to "carbo-load" before and after with a good malt & hops beverage. :biglaugh:

You all had the best duty stations, barracks and chow halls I have been to. I keep telling my boys to skip the Army and go straight to the USAF.
We were always jealous of your workout "program".
I would be in traction after that work out. Probably miss the entire hunting season!
Tdhartsell I was with 3/8 kilo weapons platoon 2001-2003.than I went to 2/6 . Semper Fi guys
X2 What Mike said. I was an Army Instructor and trained the Air Force Reserve from NJ to get them ready for the Nellis AFB Silver Flag Alpha Desert Warfare School.
I tell my Grandson the same Mike. Go Air Force
Deno
US Army Ranger
LRRP
Vietnam
For clarification on how to do the ladder:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxQT-wZdP28
See the video above for how to do an 8 count. Both the 8 count and burpee work every muscle in your body and burn a ton of cals and give you incredible endurance.
To do both ladders:
1) 5 8 Counts (or Burpees)
2) Walk or Sprint or Bear Crawl 25 yards
3) 4 8 Counts (or Burpees)
4) Walk or Sprint or Bear Crawl 25 yards
5) 3 8 Counts (or Burpees)
6) Walk or Sprint or Bear Crawl 25 yards
7) 2 8 Counts (or Burpees)
8) Walk or Sprint or Bear Crawl 25 yards
9) 1 8 Counts (or Burpees)
10) Walk or Sprint or Bear Crawl 25 yards
Hope that helps.
Take what you want from this and make your own regimen to fit your own needs. I would incorporate running into the routine if you plan on bear hunting!
I hunt from a tree. Do you suppose that exempts me
Maybe, just maybe you can fit in shooting your bow, maybe... Just sayin' ....... Just turned 60 and stalking slooooow like you say can put a hurting on you... Don't I know it! I wouldn't hunt any other way... Thanks for some good ideas...
... mike ... :archer2: ...

LOL :biglaugh:
No, Possum Head. I think the pull ups and chin ups would help with the tree stand hunting, especially -- God forbid -- you had a slip or a fall.
