Title: Altering Grip on Red Wing Hunter
Post by: tippit on March 03, 2017, 05:03:00 PM
Well I'm back in Boston for a few weeks while my wife recovers from shoulder (rotator cuff) surgery.  Not much to do besides being a "nurse on call" so just playing around with a few old bows.  The Red Wing Hunters have always been a favorite hunting bow...but the grip is just way to big & fat for me anyway. A ten minute diet on the knife grinder fixed that!  Once it's sanded to 320 and feathered into the original finish, Tru Oil will blend in very nicely.  It will be hard to even see where it was worked on...tippit

Yep.  If done well, it's not noticeable.  Improves shootability and doesn't detract from value.

i changed the grip on my Gorves.  The thick chunk above the grip hurt my thumb knuckle.  The bottom end was too fat and steep and difficult to simply hold when not shooting.  My hand never likes grips with a lot of palm swell.

I like thinner grips myself! about how much material did you shave off?   Do you guys think it would be risky to work on the throat of a grip?

On recurves I have made left to right narrower, I have always been a little nervous about making them front to back thinner. Some cheaper bows have a real blocky feel and I absolutely hate flat backs and square edges.  I also do not like the feel of a flattened and wide throat on recurve grips.  When they feel like they are trying to spread my index and thumb joints, they need some tapering.
