OK I'm heading to SW Ontario last couple days of may for a spring bear hunt. Have heard horror stories about the bugs. I plan on now taking 2 Thermacells with the fresh earth pads and a pile of fuel canisters. However I still want a good quality bug head net. I want one that is black(am told much easier to see through) and one that before I take the shot am able to lift away easy. Am very worried about feeling my anchor point through a head net. Any ideas?

I use the gardening bug nets and Yes, black is the ideal colour. As for finding anchor ,just practice as much as possible and get used to it. Also make sure you find the right hat to keep netting off your face.Ken

Ken... Hat recommendation? I was told a boonie style with a short stiff brim. Any ideas.

If you are flying up there, be advised that it is against the rules to take the fuel canisters for the Thermacell on the plane, checked or carry on!

Ever since thermacells were invented, Ive just worn bug dope on my head. I spent way too many hours in bear baits over the years dressed like a beekeeper. Lots of people dont like the added scent but I dont believe for a second that if a bear gets downwind of you, its going to matter anyway. We used to do the whole deal with bugsuits, latex gloves under cotton gloves, duct tape on wrists and ankles. It was a really long process. We would even tie shirts around our heads and wear them under the headnets because as soon as your ear or cheek touched the net, you got bit. Central quebec was just absolutely unreal for blood suckers when I started going up.
We were over 100 miles in on dirt roads. Now I just treat my clothes with permanone, use a thermacell, and dope up my hands and face and hat.

Roy, I've never needed one in either Northern Maine or Quebec with two Thermocells. and I HATE skeeters and black flies!!! Good luck.

Last year in NW Ontario, the themocells with bug dope was enough to keep the skeeters and blackflies at bay.... The ticks were extremely thick! But just on the bears! I never had any get on me except when I was helping skin.

Just bug repellent. I like the off dry spray.

Used to use muskol until a bottle opened in a tackle box and melted every lure in it and the box itself.

I have been using the same little bottle of Muskol for 20 years, just a little dab will do ya. I think they were still selling Brilcream 20 years ago as well. I put on a head net once when the gnats were bad during spring turkey season. I got to see what the back side of that net looked like real fast when I took a practice shot.

Thermacell and repellant will do the job. Just remember to fire up the Thermacell early and replace the pads early too.

I was in mosquito heaven last spring in Saskatchewan. Thermacell worked well until mine decided to quit, and then I was sure glad i had a headnet.

I think my bear was happy to get killed so that he could get away from the skeeters.

Watkins insect repellant, they sale it at walmart and most sporting goods stores in Ontario. We've always called it bug dope.

One Thermacell under my seat on stand was all I needed. Even walking in slowly the Thermacell would keep black flies away...but I would carry an extra Theramcell and head net. One trick to the head net is I used to cut a hole to be able to see with my shooting eye. If the sun hits the net, you can't see. Then practice positioning the hole so as you draw the hole opens at your shooting eye. Have fun!

If you get a tick embedded, just put a small drop of Muskol bug 'dope' on it. In a few second the tick will be going, "Hey dude what's happenin' man." When it starts tripping, they have loosened their bite and you can safely pull them out 'feet up' without leaving their fangs behind.
