More tomorrow....including grill pics......Wow!!!
-
:campfire:
-
looking forward to this.

Here is a little look at the fun we were having on a beautiful piece of land. That's Gracie pointing a quail that tried to outsmart her by hiding in a field of short wheat.
We saw a lot of Gracie pointing at the St. Jude's Quail Hunt. She kept us busy on both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Gracie is a French Brittany. Brittanys are small pointing dogs that are high-octane hunters.

Like all pointing dogs, Brittanys point the scent of the quail. The bird is about 5 yards in front of her and completely hidden under the growing wheat. Gracie hit the scent stream and slammed on the breaks into a beautiful, solid point.

I can't see the pics on this computer, but I bet it was a blast. My dad "guided" for a few years for the Cotton Carnival in Memphis to raise money for St. Jude until they quit having the hunt I believe. They usually held the hunt in Clarksdale, MS. He's actually on his way back from hunting in TX as we speak.
-
Hang on.... had a family crisis I had to deal with...but quail on the grill yet again.... yep that means again!!!
Which means we killed a bunch of quail, there's a lot of stories behind this hunt and those of you who frequent the st. Jude's auction know what I'm talking about and those of you who don't frequent the st. Jude's auction have no idea what you are missing out on.
This was one Great Adventure give me a few I've got a sick child and I'm still dealing with the tail end of a family crisis thank you so much .....look forward to sharing the rest of the story with you as soon as I can
-
Hope all is well Terry :campfire:

Sorry for the delay....
So....I wont stand on too much ceremony....but let me tell ya....if you like to quail hunt...you should really check this offering that will be on the St Judes hunt AGAIN!!!
Great Host in Joe, great food, great scenery, great hunting and a fabulous little hunting dog named Gracie. This is a very special hunt for me...and I hope someone comes and joins us next year.
This is the 2nd year I have been, and I hope to make it back next year with the winner as I will be hosting with Joe if at all possible.
I arrived at Joe's about lunch time and we had lunch and caught up on a few things going on in our lives....and then we headed out to hunt.....
Oh Yeah....and we of course had Gracie the Wonder Dog on board...she got a new nick name by me this weekend ....find out what and why.....stay tuned.....

It was an absolute PERFECT day to hunt, just a little cool and a slight breeze...and blue sky that seemed to go forever.
Although Joe provides the shot guns, I'll let him speak about them, for the afternoon I was going to use my Gradfathers side by side double barrel that is probably older than me. It was his side kick on all the dove hunts we attended over the years while I was growing up. I felt as if a part of him was with me....and I'm sure he was.....

Miss Gracie delivering a quail after a great point, a terrific shot and a flawless retrieve. In the photo she is waiting for the command to "give" before she can go find and point more quail.
I love hosting this hunt. We have a good time, and the St. Jude's kids get some necessary support.

Outstanding!!!
-
It wasn't long before Gracie went on point and we were poised and ready....it flushed and flew on my side and I took it out on the 1st shot.....what a start....
It was on then....fast and furious. Granddad must have been with me as I killed the 1st 3 I shot at and Joe and I had a lot of action really quick. It was a great afternoon and Gracie the Wonder Dog was doing a fantastic job let me tell ya.....she was all over the place pointing and retrieving. We ended up with 10 birds that afternoon.
As the hunt came to a close we looked forward to quail poppers that evening for an appetizer for dinner.....YUMMMM.....

-
Then evening was filled with aromatic aromas of quail, bacon, and banana peppers, and an atmosphere that everyone wishes after a hunt....minus the campfire....but we did have a grill. ;)
My host and Hostess, Joe and Deb, offer some mighty fine southern hospitality and great conversation. A truly relaxing evening enjoying the good things in life.....friends.
-
We got up early the next day. I was refreshed as I slept like a log....something I've had a hard time doing lately.....
We had a hearty breakfast to 'get fortified' as my late Uncle Green use to say,...as did Joe's trio of well behaved canine crew. Gracie knew what was up and was sitting on ready awaiting for us to head to the door.
I as well could not wait to get back afield with her and Joe for yet another magical morning.....

As Terry said, I do provide shotguns and shells for the guests on this hunt.
For those of you who know your way around classic side-by-side double guns, the Parker needs no introduction. And the Parker Reproduction is a modern copy of the classic Parker that is so accurate that the parts are interchangeable with the original Parkers. The important difference is that the Parker Reproduction side-by-sides are made with modern steel.
So, the two shotguns provided for the guests to use are 20 ga. Parker Reproduction side-by-sides with 26" improved cylinder and modified barrels. They have English-style straight hand stocks and splinter fore ends. They are as slim and elegant as a ballerina's ankle and perfectly balanced. The two are a matched pair with sequential serial numbers, both built in the 1980's. They are classic upland bird guns.
I also provide boxes of 20 ga. shells. They are light game loads in #8 shot -- perfect for quail.

Well, it was another beautiful day.....like a continuation of the afternoon before except that the temperature was just a little crisp. Gracie was wired.
The hunting picked up just like we let off as well. It wasn't long before we were into action. Gracie doing her stuff, and Joe and I trying to keep up with her. She's a hunting fool.
Not long after we started, we got a couple of birds pretty fast, and then everything seemed to just slow down. Not Gracie, not the hunting, just the whole experience. It seemed if the morning just kept going and going. Unlike most hunts like this that seemed to fly by. Maybe I was just soaking it all in since I haven't been hunting much lately. Least that' how it felt. Taking it ALL of the mornings gifts that had been given to us....
Next, Gracie gets a NEW nick-name.....

Looks like a grand time, for sure!!!

Like Terry said, we were into birds on Saturday morning within a few minutes. Gracie would point. We would walk in and flush, shoot and sometimes hit the quail, but sometimes miss. And we would send Gracie to "fetch" and return the dead quail to us.
Sometimes if the quail is only nicked and not hit hard, Gracie will point the hit bird as if it had not been shot. I suspect that a lightly hit quail gives off a scent more like a new bird than like a dead quail.
Sometimes Gracie will "flash point" a lightly hit quail and then get a bit of blood scent and go ahead and retrieve it.
A lightly hit quail that Gracie first pointed and then moved in to fetch will be part of Terry's story about her new nickname.
I'll let Terry tell the story.....
-
Good story tell,n boys ... I love hunting with a good dog. Gracie sounds like a dandy !
:campfire:
-
OK....So Joe and I opened up on a bird together and someone clipped it....don't know who...don't care....don't matter.....
What matters is what happened next....
Gracie goes to 'fetch' the bird and re-points it...then she evidently smelled blood and went to fetch....then all heck broke loose....
The bird flushed......not in a normal retreat and escape direction, but rose and flew in the direction right over Gracie's head......
Her forward momentum was re-directed to a leap to catch the bird in mid air....
She leaped and caught the bird in flight at the peak of her jump and the direction of the bird flying over her head resulted if a COMPETE back flip.....she landed on all fours with the bird in her mouth!!!
Joe and I just looked at each other, and I asked Joe...."Did you just see what I think I saw"...and he replied...."Yes, that was amazing"!!!!!
We stood in awe for a moment with Gracie just looking at us back an forth waiting for the give command as Joe and I were soaking it all in.
So, she got a new nick-name.....
Gracie La' Cirque....(Gracie the circus dog).
A sight I will never forget......sometimes its not about the kill as much as its about the dog!!!!!
-
I think there is a song about her "Amazing Gracie" LOL

Gracie pointed a lot of quail during the St. Jude'a Quail Hunt this year. There is one in that thick tangle somewhere.

I want to thank the fine folks at River Ranch Sporting Club for helping me host the St. Jude's Quail Hunt. The hunt would be impossible without their fine hospitality.
...and there is another point....

The Poppers we bacon wrapped quail chunks with a little sweet heat Buffalo from Walt's.....really nothing needs to be addes but I LOVE Walt's sweet heat....and the Buffalo mix adds a little kick that's wonderfull...but not too hot...
The legs also got sweet heat AND the Chipolte roasted Garlic seasoning...
And the breasts got the garlic salt and maple...
I can't tell you what a scruptious meal this was...Thrice!!!!
Yes...we killed 19 in two hunts....10 the 1st afternoon and 9 the 1st morning...would have been more if my shooting would have been better....but when you don't shoot a shotgun for 20 years(except for last years hunt)....that's the way it goes. Considering...I really did do that bad.

Final comments and pic this evening.....

In parting, I'd like to thank Joe and Deb once again for all they did....and Gracie for making such a spectacle of her aerobatics that was so magnificent that we could have ended the hunt right then and there and would have been totally satisfied. That was the highlight of the hunt.
So, we'd love for someone to come join us next Jan/Feb on this hunt by winning the St Judes Offering that Joe is planning on offering again.
Thanks for viewing...... :campfire:
