Title: Found a buck head
Post by: TIM B on February 20, 2017, 05:35:00 AM
Yesterday I found a nice buck head.  It was in real good shape.  Hadent been chewed on at all.  The skull was all intact aside from one of the lower thin nose bones.  Aside from a little greenish moss color on it - it looks like ya boiled it out.  Not a speck of hide or hair on it.  It surely has to be from this fall since it hasent been all chewed up don't ya think??

Doubt it was from this past fall, perhaps a year past..

I was educated from a friend of mine regarding skulls found in the woods.  You may want to reach out to your local conservation officer prior to grabbing it.  I'm not sure how MO works but in IL they issue some sort of tag to you for proof that you didn't shoot it illegally.  Just a heads up.

If its completely clean with moss on it then around here that means its at least a year old.

You can usually tell by the antlers though, very smooth and polished equals fresh.
Rough and bleached equals its been out in the weather for more then a few months.

Iv found year old sheds without a chew mark on them and fresh drops almost completely eaten up, sometimes the squirrels don't find them OR maybe its deficient in the minerals that they are looking for?

Lats see a pic of this guy   :readit:

I think for it's clean to bone, it's from a year ago not this fall. There would be skin, hair and meat fragments still left from this year

Yep and the critters will leave it for a year usually if it's. deadhead. You gotta get a paper from CO to keep it legally.
