Title: Canting a Recurve?
Post by: snag on October 30, 2007, 01:31:00 PM
I have been canting all the stick bows I shoot. Recently I was bare shaft tuning some wood arrows and made a discovery. Not wanting to influence the flight of the arrow by how I launched it I held the bow pretty vertical. The arrow flight was much better. So, I was just wondering if canting the bow is more for longbows and recurves are really meant to be shot more vertical?

Typically recurves have a larger site window and don't need to be canted for a good view of your target. I tend to shoot recurves better with the least cant I can get away with and some of the longbows even tend to shoot better with less. I think you're less likely to torque the string with a straighter wrist on release. Others have different results.

I've canted my widow for years.  I shoot a 29 inch 226 with zwickys.   My arrow flight has be perfect out to fifty yards,  no questions.  I do have a hoyt gold medalist that I shoot verticlly for tournament shooting, because of the elevated rest!  that's me! :-)

I would guess you're torquing the string when you cant the bow.....relax the back of your hand and you should have good arrow flight with or without a cant.  Weather or not you should cant or not is just a personal choice of style...I know great shots on both sides of that fence.  Those that cant tend to be more fluid with their style, those that shoot vertical more mechanical.  I have evolved over the years from a vertical form to a cant.

I cant all my bows the same, no matter if I'm shooting recurve, longbow or selfbow...I just shoot.

Shooting various cant angles don't matter either for me.

I cant the bow to round two o'clock and haven;t had any tuning issues. I haven't thought about it, but I probably setup and tune with the same cant angle. I'm a recurve shooter.    Grant

I would think that you torque a string more when you are vertical over canted? canted is more natural flow with body mechanics (wrist, shoulder.)

I cant mine always have-is right or wrong? dunno? I hit the target so I aint complainin.

Being the gap shooter that I am, I normally shoot bows more vertical.  But, the recurve I'm hunting with now has a shorter sight window, and if I don't cant I can't see the target because of the riser being in the way.

So, if I can, I don't cant, but if I can't I cant otherwise I can't hit a darn thing. ;^)

Check out terry's video    cant never could (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=000081)   on to cant or not to cant...or see it on the bowhunters of Tradgang.  pictures worth a thousand words    :)

I occasionally vary my cant when practicing from my normal, to almost horizontal, to vertical to negative it certainly highlights problems with 'inconsistent form'.
