Title: Favorite Hunts You've Been On?
Post by: Etter on February 12, 2017, 09:02:00 PM
I've been to canada 16 times bear hunting and fishing, been to SE AZ twice for javis and quail, been to Arkansas duck hunting, and been to Idaho for lions. Outside of that, I hunt bear, turkey, deer, and pigs in the southern appalachians. Plan to go back to AZ pretty dang often, but want to know what people's favorite destination hunts have been. The trips you do 16x. Fill me in!

We leave for Wild Things in eight hours. Our tenth trip there.

I guess you could say we kind of like the place.

Hard to pick a favorite. Mountain lion in Colorado ranks high along with caribou in northern Quebec. Caribou hunting is down the tubes so that won't happen again. Bear hunted in Canada and Alaska, moose in Alberta, deer and elk in Colorado, hogs and javelina in TX, hogs in GA.
Money and age starting to dictate the easier cheaper hunts now. I'll still go back to Colorado and Texas

Not as adventurous as all that, but I had the most fun I've ever experienced on a hunt this year on Boeuf WMA for hogs with 6 other guys from Tradgang. It was really the company that made that one. I've only ever hunted with family before and most of them think I'm crazy because I would rather shoot a doe with my stick-bow than a trophy buck with my rifle.

Well I hunted and trapped just about everything Ohio has.I've been to Colorado for elk. West Virginia for deer and turkey. South Carolina  and Georgia for hogs. If I had to pick one hunt a year it would be somewhere in the south for hogs hands down. Love that hog hunting    :p

Colorado tradgang elk hunt in 2010. Not just because I took a bull, but mostly because of the great group of guys I hunted with. Doug Treat, Hackbow (Darren), Buckster (Barry), WidowSax (Darren), Nightstalker (Tim) and others!

That was my favorite, and elk hunting is still tops for me.

I guess it would be a toss up between my Wyoming mule deer hunt with my son and grandson in 2006 or the most awesome time of bowfishing on Saginaw Bay with my son and two oldest grandsons in 2015!

Been to Wyoming 2 times for mule deer. British Columbia for mule deer and bear. Alberta for bear. New Mexico for elk and bear. Nebraska for mule deer, whitetail and turkeys. Oklahoma, and Illinois for whitetails. Ohio multiple times for deer and turkey. Damn I've been alot of placees. Lol.... Ontario this yr for a all traditional bear hunt.  Alberta is something special. If u want a bear hunt of a life time go nowhere else!

Never been out of state or what not on any hunts. Cant get the time to do one yet. But I tell ya I really had a good time with my Dad,brother, and nephew just on state land for a few days this past year. We had a great campsite on the Muskegon river way upstream. Fishing was slow, but man was it peaceful. Saw a few deer,no bucks, but did see the biggest doe I've ever seen before. Looked like a cow Elk. I was on the ground 15Yards from her and she caught me about half draw and trotted away. Great campfire breakfasts, and time spent. rat'

Elk hunting in Colorado with my son.  Twice I had elk within very easy rifle range, but too far for my archery skills. I hope to get back there again.

And then there is BIG bear in Manitoba, I love to hunt with Ryan at Stickflingers. Going again soon.

Out my backdoor here in Iowa on November 7, 2015. The rut was in a frenzy, perfect wind and the bucks was going nuts. I was blessed to have taken a 5 1/2 year old 8 pointer that weighed in at 239 lbs feild dressed.

I did the Moose John in Alaska for moose with Jay Massey about 25 years ago.  Didn't get a moose then, but had a helluva hunt.  Took a nice bull 10 years later when I hunted it again with Ernie Holland.  Unfortunately, Jay died in the interim. Will never forget those two hunts.

I must say that I fall into the elk hunting category.  For me nothing else gets me going like elk in Sept.  Although I will say that couse deer in Jan. here is a close second.

First mule deer hunt in Wyoming, 1981 near Lysite.  Have old VHS video of 176 mulies in an alfalfa field. I killed a 4 x 5 on day 3 of what would be an 18-day hunt.  Missed PY because of  6 inch "s-shaped" brow tine.   My two brothers and I had DIY blinds around the perimeter of this field. We could watch each other's action every morning until the field cleared and every evening as it filled up from the surrounding sage galleys and foothills.

It was our first hunt out west. I killed a 4x5 on day 3. We had timed this hunt to catch 2 days of rifle season just in case.  Worked out that way for my little brothers, they ran out of arrows on day 16.

Made life-long friends with the rancher and hunted the place 5-6 times over the years. He had never seen a bowhunter before we arrived.

If I were limited to only one type of hunting for the rest of my days, it would be black bears in the north ga mountains. I dont really enjoy killing them much anymore but theyre so fun to hunt in our hills. And the action is pretty constant if the mast crop was favorable. Absolutely love waiting on grey light and hearing them in the trees, breaking branches and popping acorns.

That's simple, my favorite was the last one I went on, and my next favorite will be the next one I'll be on.  That's been my answer for 30+ years, and hopefully another 50 years.

I backpacked in a few years back for caribou.  Didnt get one but was 20 yards to a couple dozen and managed to bag a few ptarmagin.

This year i am hoping for my second sheep hunt and the proposed plan so far is Cold Fish lake in 2018.

If you are simply asking favorite routine hunt.... Opening morning of Kentucky's white-tail season.

I sure like black bear hunts but I'm always confronted with what to do with the bear when dead. I had a Montana plant make sticks out of the last one. Have two skulls and one rug.  Don't need anymore of those. I haven't seen a shoulder or head mount that strikes my fancy.

I don't travel much outside of CA to hunt.  But I visited an old friend in AR several years ago & spent an extended weekend hunting with him & getting to know his family.  That takes the cake of them all.

The next year, I hoofed it 8 miles early in the morning during a freezing ice storm.  Froze my rear off.  Only saw 2 does where it was legal to hunt (buck only).  Made it back to the car just after dark while it was raining & snowing.  One heck of an adventure!

This year, I spent a few days in a remote coastal canyon & got "serenaded" by a mountain lion near my camp.  Stalked in on a nice buck but he turned 90 degrees on his path & got downwind before I could cut him off.  Good times!

The destination is only the setting for the story.  Plenty of adventures within a short drive from here.  I feel like there's more to explore within a 3-hour radius than there is time to experience it in my lifetime.

2 hunts come to mind.....Bear Quest #9 in 2015, fantastic time and I got my first trad Kill. The bear in my avatar was the reward. The other hunt was in 2011 with Cyclic rivers from this site. We did a self guided Elk hunt in Colorado. Camped at almost 10,000 feet and had a great time, the week just flew by. Those two were great.....but any hunt is a good hunt.

Ive killed a good many of them but I cant ever seem to throw a hide or a skull away. Just keep getting hides tanned and skulls eurod. I like the tanned hides a lot. Not really into taxidermy anymore, although I am getting a full body javelina done this year. (Long story but it took me two trips driving from ga to AZ to even put a tag on one).  I dont even mount deer anymore. Just cut the rack off and put it on a plaque if its nice enough.

All of my past hunts  are memorable.  They are favorites for different  reasons.  I am sure all the future hunts will be the same.   The one that I think about most are mule deer. They are my nemesis. If I never get one that is all right, they have provided many memories.

If I bear hunt again I'll have to try the "tanned" route. Yes, I always keep the skulls. It is such a different hunt being in the spring.

A perfect recurve/lb hunt too as the shot can be set up at any angle and distance the hunter prefers.

I'm betting any hunt with Charlie Lamb would be memorable. That man always looks as happy as a pig in &#%@ just to have a bow in his hand.

My most memorable hunt with longbow was a wv whitetail hunt that turned into a coyote hunt when one came trotting by at 11 yards. Then I had to carry that flea bag over a mile back to my vehicle.

My favorite hunts are the ones I got to spend with my Grandpa, and my Dad both of whom have passed.  Great memories being able to grow up tagging along with them, and being able to spend time in the woods with them.  The time I get to spend hunting with my brother are also my favorites.

All the times with my dad when he started letting me tag along when I was about ten.  Lots of lessons on sitting still and reading the wind.  It was a huge thrill.

My last hunt with my dad was just after I got out of college and we went off for a weekend of mulie hunting.  I saw that he was shooting some store bought cheapo arrows that he had put his bear razor heads on.  They were all crooked.  It was the first sign that my dad was in the early stages of alzheimers.

Next to that is whatever the next trip is that I'm planning.

My favorites would have to Caribou first, from Alaska to Newfoundland the country you hunt them in is beautiful, Elk second, again the scenery, Spring bear would be third but the one everyone should do at least once is Africa, pretty hard to compare to anywhere else I've been.

Took two trips to Quebec after Caribou. The first trip in '99 there were 9 of us that traveled up together. Saw a few Caribou and if memory serves me correctly there were 10 Caribou that made the trip back to Indiana...none were mine though. Even though I came home without an animal, it was probably the best trip I have ever been on. Good friends, comradery, fresh fish for supper and the Northern Lights at night!
Three of us from the trip in '99 booked for 2003. We ended up in a large base type camp that housed 20 hunters in all. I wasn't sure how that was going to work out with that many hunters, but we hit the "migration" and it was crazy. I had killed out by day 3 and could've killed out on the first day, but with that many Caribou I was being fairly picky. We saw hundreds of Caribou each day and I had over 1000 come through on the day I killed out.
Things are much different in Quebec now and those days are over. I feel blessed to have had the chance to hunt for Quebec/Labrador Caribou and to stomp around in that beautiful country and to have been fortunate enough to kill two nice bulls.
