My 45# Big 5 came with a 10 strand B50 flemish twist, which is too narrow for my taste. I want to try one with more strands.
However, the next size up which I find in flemish is a 15 strand (3 bundles x 5 strands).
Would this be too wide for the string nocks on a Hill bow?
And if so, does anyone make a 12 strand in 63" length?
Thank you,
Frank
If the serving is thinner than you like, just re-serve it with a larger diameter serving thread.
Lots of string makers make two-bundle Flemish strings so should be able to buy a 12- or 14-strand string in B-50 if you look around a little. Any string maker can make the string any length you want.
A 15-strand B50 string will not be too big to fit the nocks on a Hill.
45# , 12 is just fine and won't be fat .
I build most of my B50 strings with 14 strands. That seems like a reasonable size for most bows, unless it's for a light weight bow.
Depending on your serving dia., you should have no trouble getting good nock fit with 15 strands.
Thank all for the feedback.
The wood arrows I purchased from HHA came with 11/32 Bohning Classic Index nocks, which were indeed too large for the serving on the 10 strand flemish which came on the Big 5. But that was easily rectified by dipping them in hot water and then pinching them smaller.
The real issue for me is just not having enough strands to control the stretching on my Big 5 longbow. I feel that for B50, it is too much force spread over too few strands, resulting in more stretch per strand.
For example, if I set my Big 5 brace height to 6 5/8", after shooting for a while it will be 6 7/16" or less. Then, after having it unstrung for even a short time, when first stringing up it will be 6 5/8 again.
When I first got my two recurves they came with 12 strand B50's. I now use 14 on my 40# recurve, and 16 on my 50# recurve, and they are both quite stable, as well as quieter than a 12 strand.

Allen, I think that I'm going to try one of your strings.
What is your typical turnaround time?
Also, I'm a little confused with your non-PayPal checkout option: where do I specify my string length and options?
Thanks
I use 12 strands for bows 45# and 14 strands for bows 50# and over.
Frank, I'm running just about a week out on orders.
There should be a comments box as you check out where you add the string specs. If it doesn't appear, just shoot me an email.
The continual stretching that you are experiencing is exactly why I use mostly 14 strands on my B50 strings. They settle in very nicely after I pre-stretch them

I just placed an order Allen, and sent you an email, as I could not find any place to add the pertinent information.
Best wishes,
Frank
Actually, I would opt for a 12 strand at that weight. A Hill bow is not going to stress, stretch, much.
Personally, if a newer Hill, I would look at trying one of Allen's Fury strings, too.

Hello Frank:
I actually have a 12 string endless loop coming in this week that I want to try.
But from my experience with my 40# recurve, I still had more stretch than I wanted with the B50 12 strand which came with that recurve.
Best wishes,
Frank
I am sure ten ring strings can do this as well, Chad fines the right size serving for my original size Mercury nocks to have just the right fit and makes mine out BCY.
I like 12 strands as well.I think once you know the right length to a tee.Have it made so it wont have too many twists.Having a string prestretched in B-55 is a good idea.
I just got a new string in B-55.Its a superbly made string.Shoots very well. Its on a 44 pound bow at my draw.If I could do one thing different with it.It would be to make it about 1/2 inch shorter. Then it would be perfect.I am being picky though.
I shoot 12 and 14 strand 2 bundle flemish. Its Easy to put my home made wool puffs inbetween the 2 bundle and get them centered.
This string overall outperformed the 2 FF strings I tried on this particular bow. This bow likes B-55!
I do prefer the Flemish over the endless.I have had some bows make a buzz sound with endless. The hard serving material buzzing against the string grooves of the curves as they vibrate.Replaced the endless with Flemish and problem solved.
I don't understand all this stretch folks talk about? With an endless even less!
Currently shooting a 9 strand dacron, flemish, 3 ply. 70's Bear Grizzly, 53 lb. It stays strung.
It will be on the bow 2 years this July. Brace is 7 5/8" and has not moved. Shot and hunted regularly! Must done something wrong.
The biggest differences with longbows, is that some have more feel than others with B50s than the modern strings and when I am shooting without an arm guard, the B 50 strings tag my wrist about an inch further in than the modern stuff that barely touches.
I use 14 strand B50 on my Hill bows. Just placed an order with Allen.
