Title: Who's still shooting aluminum's?
Post by: Covey on February 11, 2017, 07:55:00 PM
Just a curious question! With all the skinny carbons and FOC, EFOC, UEFOC, etc... I was just wondering if there were any diehard aluminum fans still out there? I've been on the carbon train for a while now, but I'm going to do a U-turn and head back to my roots for a while.
This is not a carbon/aluminum debate, just an innocent question!
Thanks in advance

I've recently started shooting aluminum again since my compound days back in the '90's. My lower poundage bows shoot 2016's better than anything else. Just a point weight change and I'm ready to go. Hassle free tuning.

Just bought some 2018's today. I like carbons, but aluminums are straighter, unless I buy .001 carbon shafts. My arrow spinner shows it. Guy I buy my arrows from is great, but I have to tell him to cut so much from both ends all the time, if the carbons are .003-.006.

XX75 2016 Game getters and Legacys. For stumping I foot my 2016s with 2 1/2" of 2215 I think they are.
I actually put the insert in the 2215 shaft. They hold up really well.

I shot wood for twenty years, aluminum for the last ten. I've never used carbon.

Last fall I used 2018 easton shafts that belonged to my father. I just recently got some from 3 Rivers.

Those old gamegetters could be a little soft if you weren't careful with your shooting. The newer version is the much tougher XX75 alloy.

I always figured as long as it was working I wouldn't change it. Give me aluminum any day.

GameGetters, Tributes, Legacy - I like and shoot aluminums.  With such a wide range of sizes, you can really tune the arrow to the bow while keeping your point weights the same, from bow to bow.  That is very appealing.  Platinum Plus will be my next shafts.

I am new to trad but prefer aluminum to carbon when it makes sense for the bow. I like not having to flex the arrow after each shot to make sure it's safe (I've had several carbon shafts explode when shooting from a compound and broke a few with trad bows) and I can cut them with a tube cutter myself instead of an expensive saw (which I do not own). They also seem to be much more consistent in weight. Lancaster has all the aluminum shafts you need if you do your research.

I shoot Easton Legacy 1918's in my 40 and 45# bows and 2016 in my 50# bow. I still have some vintage game getters and XX75 autumn orange shafts in 2117,2016,and may have some 2018's around here somwhere. Great for targets and hunting but can be risky for stumping if you have hard stumps or alot of rocks like I do around here.

Diehard here. 2018's have been, and will continue to be my choice. A great shaft. Small diameter, tough as hell, and fly great. No reason to switch.

My son shoots aluminums, I was going to get him some Surewoods, he flat out told me, no.    I do much of the time.  Mine are 27 bop 1918s, i shoot them out of my low 50s longbows.

I  started with aluminum and woodies.I shot them for years.I shoot carbon alot and still shoot carbons.I like thier durability and penetration.I have had good luck with Carbon Express Heritige models.

I still shoot aluminums and when you know what spine you need its very easy to just buy them and shoot them and your good to go.I typically like the smaller diameters for hunting.Like 2020s,2018s and 2016s.The 2020s and 2018s are really nice with thier thicker walls for durability and grain weight for hunting

Nothing beats aluminum arrows for consistency, straightness, ease of setup (vast range of size and spine available) relatively low cost etc.  None of this "glue in or on extra stuff" to get to a hunting wt arrow either like with carbon.  They have been trying to make carbons as straight and consistent as aluminum for 30 years.... still can't compare.

Just glue on feathers and a nock, cut to length, glue in an adaptor and go.

I killed 2 bucks and a doe this year with 2215's....no complaints at all (from me)!  I probably have 20 dozen aluminum arrows and shafts of different sizes laying around here.

To be honest, I haven't shot aluminum since I shot wheelie bows back in the mid 90's. Like most people, I turned to carbon but here in recent months, I have returned to wood. I just feel more in tune with wood.
Title: Re: Who's still shooting aluminum's?

Well there's a pretty good handful of ya! I've tried to get the carbons to be as consistent as my old aluminums with no success. They are my some super straight carbons, but man are they expensive! I can buy a dozen 2117 for at least 20 bucks less than a half dozen high end carbons. I know guys have great success with em, but I'm all about cheap, consistent, no brainer put some fletching on and go these days. I shot aluminums for several years so I know what works and that's what I'm gonna stick with!
Thanks for all the post fellas

2018's for me! I shoot wood as well and have never bothered messing with carbons. It's funny how some of my carbon buddies refer to my "fat arrows" when shooting 3D. It has helped up my score on occasion!

I shoot aluminum also. XX75 1916's and 2016's both shoot equally well for me with just a point weight change. They are straight and easy to work with and I see no need to consider any other shaft material.

I shoot 2317s with two of my bows and 2419s with another.

I prefer aluminum for my regular form practices, stump shooting, small game, and some big game.

I hope I have enough 2419s to last me for the rest of my life (I'm almost 64) because they don't make them anymore.

I also use cedars for big game, especially to economize my 2419s.

I've never tried carbons although I've been given some.

I shoot mostly aluminum and some wood.  I have some 1820 that are tough and penetrate like crazy at 620 grains.  Love em.     What glue do you guys use to attach feathers to bare aluminum?  I use Sanders with pretty good results but I'd like to know what Easton uses on their factory arrows.  You can't hardly cut those vanes off them factory arrows.

I still shoot aluminums from a Gen 3 T-Bird 48@28 (B50 string) and it bare shaft tunes a 29" 1916's with 200gr points perfect,,,  the arrow for this bow is usually pointed with a 200gr Magnus MA1 or Snuffer 160 with long aluminum adaptor (depending on back quiver or bow quiver),,,,, its so perfect I have no need to try another arrow from this bow.....

I was moving over to all woods years back, then I was given a gross of 1918s with glue on one piece ferrules and screw on ferrules.  They flew just right out of my current bows.   However, it seems that the guys that I supply with arrows, \\ prefer woods.  I turned over over a Schulz to a guy this week, I offered him aluminums to go with it, but he wanted woods, I turned the bow that he turned back to me, over to a kid that I gave a recurve to and he also wanted woods.  So there goes my my stash of Surewoods and tapered cedars again.  I was going to buy the shafts for for him, but ones that I had on hand worked just right, so I will be replacing my stash for the next bow I have coming for myself instead.  That will give the freedom to use what ever spine would be best for the new bow, so I am OK with it.

Shoot mostly aluminum with some wood and bamboo. I've always like aluminum but decided to try the more expensive carbons to see what all the hype was. Definitely tougher, but still not unbreakable. I shot them until one snapped right after release. I usually tested them by listening for any crackling when doing the bending test, but got careless and forgot with this one. Luckily, it did not imbed into my hand or wrist when it snapped into two. I had shattered a few other carbons before that, but always when my bad shots hit something hard, like a rock, cement, etc.  I much prefer a bent aluminum shaft than a shattered carbon that might poke through my hand!

And as much as I've shot wood in the past, I've been lucky enough to never have one snap or shatter upon release. Oh, I've busted plenty of them when they've hit trees and rocks and such. My Home Depot bamboo stake arrows have never broken after several years - hope I didn't jinx them by saying that!

But aluminum are by far my favorite!

Could someone point me in the right direction for some aluminums for a bow around 50@28, and I draw to 29.5?

I have some 2114's, would they work?

My arrow will have to be at least 29.75".
Title: Re: Who's still shooting aluminum's?

I use 2018 from a 52#@29.5 and 2114 from my 47#@29 bows. Both full length with 145 up front. Work very well for me out of recurves. Have carbons but am thinking of selling them off as aluminum just tunes better for me is seems less picky. Bent aluminum goes into the squirrel/bunny pile with flu-flus. Worst case they make interesting tomato stakes.

My bet is 2114 will be too weak for 55#, esp at the length you need them. I think you would be much better off with 2018.

As far as inserts go, they are pretty much specific to the shaft. You need to order some inserts for a 2114 shaft.

Edit: I just looked on Eastons site and 2113-2117 uses the same insert.

Thats good Covey , for in the end its not the shaft or the head or bow that takes game , but the person behind all of it . just as now the choices we make are everything that matters , its personal . The time spent getting everything right , leading up to the moment you decide to take a life . To me it is very personal , almost spiritual , the moment I release the string everything is in slow motion , til the arrow hits the mark , then a some what odd feeling of gilt or remorse . Carry what you choose with confidence and be successful .

I had a dozen 1918s 24rst with both ends swaged.  They were the right length for a local fellow trad shooter, with 145 grain heads they were also the perfect spine.   I made six field points and six with 145 Ribtec broadheads.   he knows that they are rare and not replaceable and is as protective of them as a mother hen.   He already asked if he could borrow my deer cart for when he puts one through a deer, he seems pretty sure of himself.

I got the arrows in from Kip.  I am assuming I need to get me a little stiffer spine.  I'm not sure why, but I seem to always need a stiffer than usual spine.

I am going to try to get my hands on some 2117's and then go from there.

I love wooden arrows , but my bow doesn't.
Haven't found anything that shoots better out of my Savannah than 2018's.

I've been shooting an old Grizz for a few years now and when I go to the range or 3D shoots my quiver is filled with miss matched wood, carbon and aluminum.  After a while I kept noticing the one 2016 gamegetter would always hit where I wanted and flew straight.  So I finally traded a guy one of my quivers for a dozen autum orange eastons and love them!!

Aluminum is the most consistent arrow shaft on the planet, shaft to shaft.
I love good tapered wood too but aluminum is durable unless you are shootin thin wall shafts.
I,ve played with carbon some but I damaged more carbon shafts than I have aluminum.

My Kanati is 54# @ 28" I pull 29". One would think I could shoot a 2117 but I always need a stiffer spine. I had to go all the way to a 2219 with a 150 grn head and I get really good flight.

I shot my first whitetail with cedar arrow but switched to aluminum shortly after and have stayed with aluminum xx75s. I did just recently buy a dozen carbons & I'll finally get to tune & cut them to length tomorrow.

Wish I could find some of those old 2216 Jim Doughtery super naturals.

I have shot only aluminum or wood for 40 years, Never saw a reason to leave them. Right now I'm using 2020's out of my 57 lb recurve and 2016's out of my 54lb longbow both with 175 gr upfront and at 28"   I watch my buddies messing with carbons trying to get the weight up or get them tuned , I just want what works keeping things as simple as possible. For me that's aluminum

I haven't shot aluminum in 27 years and have never shot a carbon arrow. I shot aluminum when I shot a compound bc,(before carbon). I have only shot wood since I went back to traditional.

I like aluminum.  Unfortunately the dozen and a half XX75 2117 I have are now too weak for my new limbs, especially with the Zwickey Deltas I was using..
Now looking for a XX75 2216 to try.
A bit heavy, but the bow I shoot really sucks up the extra weight without a lot of lost speed.
