Pictures 2&3 are of same deer. Which one would you shoot if you had a choice and why?
I would take either one if given the chance.
Mike,
Thanks for your help. I have both of these guys showing up regularly. I have all next week off and the rut is just getting into full swing. The 8 pointer has a little more mass I think and the outside spread is not bad. As for score I'm not sure what the difference would be. There is one that makes these boys look small around the area but he's camera shy!
Tough call from those pics. If you had left off the 3rd pic I would have said I would shoot the 10, but the 3rd pic shows the mass the 8 has. When you consider the width in pic 2 and how it makes him look like he does'nt have a lot of mass, but you see the mass in pic 3. Now I'm thinking that is a really nice 8.
I hope I'm faced with that dillema in IL over the next week. I leave in 48 hrs!
Whichever one presents me a good shot. I was picky during early season here. Won't be the rest of the year and either of them boys are shooters in my neck of the woods.
Looks to me like the 5 point might score a bit better, but the 4 point has a bit more mass going for him...
If you know there's a bigger buck in the area and you have time yet to hunt during the rut, I would let both of these bucks grow another year or two...
David, If given a choice,I'd take the 8pt. It looks like a real nice mature buck. Of course I might have to hold out for the bigger one If I knew for sure he's around somewhere.... Good Luck bud,any of those bucks will make you proud!
I wait til daylight hunting hours...
now thats a problem i would like to have...
having never takin a buck with the recurve it wouldnt make a bit of difference to me but i really like the second picture of that 8, but you cant go wrong with a 10.
Yup, thats a problem i would like to have
I also would take the 8 pointer. He looks a bit older than the 10. Hard decision though if the 10 came in first. LOL
I also would take the 8 pointer, due to the mass and the fact that he looks more mature to me, but reality tells me that the first one with a good shot opportunity would be my choice.
They are both nice but I would probably take the 10 simply because I've never killed a 10 with a bow :D :D :D
Ghost deer scare me...... would take the 8 pointer for sure but, I would not hesitate on the 10 either.... owwww my head hurts!
The first one to give me a good clear shot. Pat
The eight...
Claudia
i would also take either one.... our blacktails around here aren't that big....
Dave,I would wait for the camera shy one and shoot does in the meantime.Do you get extra doe tags there as well?
The eight does look perhaps a little older but its tough to tell.
Good hunting
John
Either shoot the 8 or the big camera shy fella. Let the 10 grow another year and he will be thick everywhere, THAT would be a nice deer then. Good luck!
Either one, both look like nice bucks to me. If they were both there, standing broadside, in range I would probebly shoot the 4 point. I am not sure that I understand some of the terms for antler size but he appears to have a great deal of "mass" if I am using the right term. I just like the look of him.
I would take the first one which gave me a shot, but if I had to pick, I would take the eight. I love nice 8 pointers!
I'm not picky and really not to worried about horns. So which ever one gave me the shot is the one I would shoot.<><
Either one would be a trophy for me so whichever one walked in front of me first. Good hunting!
Odds are your not gonna get a chance at both at exactly the same time....myself I'd shoot which ever one gave me a good shot first even if they came in together
Good luck!!
I'd be inclined to miss them both, tbh but in a perfect world, I'd have a shot at the first one that gave me an opportunity.
By Texas managment standards you'd want to wack the slick 8 point as a cull deer. He could still use one more year. No gut yet. The 10 has character but you are only showing the rack. If it were a managment decision I'd stick with the 8 point. If I'm the one hunting and I'm within 15 yards the first one to enter the kill zone dies. What can I say, I'm a Trad Opportunist! CK
If either one gives me a good shot the other deer, God willing will have another year to grow.
Now next week is our one week traditional blackpowder hunt. This is the only place in the Province that has an area designated for a blackpowder only hunt, 6 days. Bow till Monday am then smoke pole for one week. The eight is in trouble next week if I see him! I would pass on the ten next week.
John,
We were allowed eight extra doe tags for this season again, 3rd year in a row for this program. My group gets two extra each for archery and 2 extra each for black powder week. This way we keep the land owners happy and show them we are culling does. We give alot of this extra meat to land owners as well.
Well, the 8, but I wouldn't be picky...
David, I have the next two weeks off, if ya need help deciding I could come up and show ya which one I would shoot! :bigsmyl: I am with Curt, head on he does not look that nice, but the side profile shows his length. Shawn
nice 8 has alot of meat and is pretty wide,10 is pretty good too.i would shoot either if the shot was given.
Definitely the eight if given the choice. That is the more mature buck and in another year or two the other will be much nicer. For now that eight would make a super buck for me and especially with a bow.
I killed an 11 point like the ten several years back, when I look at that rack I always imagine what he could have become. Of course someone else would have probably got him before I got that chance.
If you're looking for a book deer, it's really hard to get a 8 point to score high. They just don't score as well as a 10 or bigger.
That being said, I'd take either.
I would shot the 8 the 10 is young next year he will mature . We have managed our farm for 11 years . letting bucks mature will asure larger bucks in you future.
I would shoot the first one that gave me a shot. But if they walked out together and I could choose, I'd take the 8 pointer for much the same reasons that others have said.
Hope you have to make the choice soon!
Mark
Both those deer are better than the average white tail in NZ "introduced" so which ever one I got closest to.
I like shooting does.... so I would should the 8 point- it looks like it has bigger eyes. :)
