Looking for a wind proof layer for under a wool jacket. Any input would help greatly.
I use a golf windbreaker (both top and bottom) if I want it under. When I want it over I use my suede type rain gear.
It seems strange no one seems to make a simple under layer wind break.
Cabela's windsheer fleece vest
I have a Sitka Gear vest that's very light and pretty good at blocking the wind.
Asbell makes a wind blocker vest.
right now I only see a zippered version.
I have a pullover type widblocker vest (no zipper)
It works GREAT!
adds some warmth too.
Maybe you can get one w/o the zipper if price is a concern.
Patagonia or Kuiu goose down jacket...very lightweight, compressible, quiet, windproof, and warm.
I'll only wear this on the coldest of days, or long sits.
in the clothing forum there is a asbell full sleeve wind breaker top...if you wear a medium if not....
I use a Cabelas pullover sweater w/wind blocker built in.Some folks think it's noisey in sub-zero temps,I've had no problems spooking animals.I like it a lot.

I have always had best luck, wearing my wool, as an underlayer! A good wool sweater or jacket, covered by a soft tight weave cotton or 50/50 cotton poly Camo shirt or jacket, really beats the wind & rain!!! Plus, it keeps the wool closer to your skin, where it does the most good...!! OMMV
Duluth Trading Company Shoremans Fleece is perfect. I wear the vest under my Asbell. Windproof, quiet, extra warmth, fairly economical, and comes in neutral colors.
Asbell wind breaker vest x2 love mine
Try searching climbing/mountaineering gear for 'windshirts'. 'Back in the day' when I climbed I used a single layer nylon windshirt over or under other layers. It was super lightweight and it packed small enough I could carry it in a pocket.
Hope this is helpful.
I also use a he pull over sweater from cabelas. It has the wind shear in it and it works like a charm. It is not noisy at all. And on days around 40 degrees I wear it as my outer layer. 100% wool shell keeps me warm.
Gore Windstopper
golf wind shirt
Predator Camo Adrenalin jacket works great for that

I have two of the Asbell wind blocker fleece Pullover High Collar Vests and they work awesome.... Collar is Higher in back than front but if you extend it up you're covered nicely, otherwise roll it down and you have extra neck thickness....
Used golf wind shirt from a Goodwill or other thrift store usually runs about $3.99. There isn't a better layering option for as little money.
I'm sure it's not completely wind proof but I like a filson vest under my other wool. It's so tightly woven, it works quite well.
I have an Asbell windblock layering pullover on the classifieds. It's an actual pullover made from windblocker material. Asbell still sells the vest model.
Hope all is going well for you Mark! You coming back to Tx anytime for anything?

Thank you for your options, Bisch I trying to make it back this summer to see friends. I'll let you know. Hopefully we can go to a shoot

X2
I have the Kuiu Supper Down jacket that I put under my Asbell Wool, if its cold and windy that will do the trick, if no wind then its to noisy for me
I'm not sure how much the wool is doing as far as insulation goes on this kind of setup but I still use the wool as my outside layer for camo and noise reduction from the nylon layer of the Kuiu jacket.
I have a cabela's wool sweater w/ windblock liner and what i use the most is a LL Bean wool shirt with the nylon liner, both work great!
I also use a golf wind shirt. Works great riding my motorcycle in cold weather too.
I also wear the Cabela's wool sweater with wind blocker under almost all of my wool coats/vests/jackets. It works great, and when/if the day warms up, I just wear the sweater up top.
I have a wind shirt I got from LL Bean the always stays in the pack All you need to take that chill out of the air.
Look up sporthill. They make a stretchy, dead quiet windproof to 35mph product called 3sp. They make it in a pullover. You will thank me.
Windshears wool sweaters from Cabelas I've used them for years they work great.
Love my Asbell wind blocker vest with the big color. Perfect when the wind kicks up.
