Title: HHA clear glass over carmelized bamboo?
Post by: Learner on January 04, 2017, 08:23:00 PM
So I'm finally only a few weeks away from placing an order for a Hill T/D with HHA.

In the meantime I've been slowly going through the uber-mega-loonnnggggg "HH bug got me..." threads, which have been very educational, and have opened my eyes to the possibility of heretofore unknown (to me) customization options!

Most likely it will be a Wesley Special, but it could also be a Big 5.  In either case I've started thinking about having the inner lams to be the standard 'boo, and the outer ones to be carmelized, with clear glass on top.  I like the idea of being able to see that "candy" 'boo on the back and belly, through the clear glass.

So, I have some questions:

--- does anyone have photos of similar bows which they could post on this thread.  That would be superb!

--- will the clear glass actually be transparent, or more of a hazy translucent?

--- is "clear fiberglass" actually fiberglass, and if so, does it have the same performance characteristics?

--- does it hold up well visually, or does it tend to reveal yellowing, cloudiness, checking or fine cracks, as it ages?

--- with clear glass, should I be requesting a satin or a gloss finish?

Many thanks,
Frank

Carmelized boo is heat treated laminated bamboo used mostly for core lamps and isn't very attractive in my opinion.  It is referred to often as action boo.  If your going to spend extra money on clear fiberglass then make sure you like the look of the wood under it.

If you like the look of darkened bamboo with the nodes showing then have the bowyer use raw unlaminated bamboo and stain it the color you want.  This would be the outer veneer that shows through the clear fiberglass.  Use the action boo in the center core.  This can be a blonde natural color or camelized, amber colored.

Hhmmmm.....so is the color uneven on the carmelized bamboo, or is it that the nodes themselves showing through that is not attractive, Chad?

And I hadn't even thought about the nodes previously.  I was just focused on the color.

Even though I've liked the photos of the bows with the edges of the carmelized bamboo showing, I didn't think that I might not like the look of the nodes on the back and belly showing through.  Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I might have to reconsider, and go with the Half-Breed instead, with the yew lams on the outside.

Thanks again for your reply, Chad.

I kinda like stained A-boo under clear glass. I guess the beauty is in the owners eyes.  :)

I posted a reply on the other identical thread to this one--I agree with Chad/Holm-Made.  I think he gave you good advice. Lightly stained bamboo looks great under clear glass.
