Title: gloss or satin finish on Hill bows?
Post by: Learner on January 03, 2017, 07:16:00 AM
I'm trying to decide on the gloss or satin finish on a Hill bow from HHA.

Could you share your preference and why, and whether or not you hunt with it?

Personally I think that I'd like the gloss, but I'm wondering if it would be too reflective when hunting?

Thank you,
Frank

I don't like gloss for the very reason you gave - too reflective.

Mine is satin.   I bought it that way.  If I was to order a new one from Craig, I'd go with the same.

I never have cared for a glossy finish on any wood, bow or gun. I'm just a fan of satin, don't know why. Just one opinion though.

I love the gloss.  Classy and nice.  Movement and scent gets you busted.

Yes, I hunt with them and have great success.

Have killed deer with a glossy white glassed bow from the ground.

Have fun and hunt!

I like satin for hunting. However, I just picked up a Wallace Mountain Bow that has a high gloss finish. It is beautiful. I can cover up 95% of the bow with Limb Skins if I hunt with it.

Some paste wax unbuffed will kill the gloss

Thank you, everyone.  Satin seems to be winning here.

Go with gloss then wax it up like Ddave said during hunting season.

Best of both worlds.

I like mine in the satin finish the best! But I traded for a Big Five a few years ago with a gloss finish, black glass and gaboon ebony riser! It was a sharp looking bow, sweet!

I have both and like both. I don't believe that glossy gets you busted - its the movement that does that. So, I have no reason to prefer satin over glossy based on hunting suitability. I usually wind up getting a bow just because it catches my eye as long as it is within the specs I like. Aesthetically, I am totally wishy-washy, so can I cast half a vote in each column?

I think you answered your own question.  Gloss finishes are pretty but unless you hunt where the sun doesn't shine it's not a great choice, lol.

As for using paste wax to dull the bow finish, they tend to be a little messy and their strong odor is again enough to just say no to.

For butter knives and hunting bow finishes, dull makes sense.

Note twofor's post picture.  He has success doing all of the things lots of folks think are big no-nos.  On the ground no camo, all white bow with a gloss finish, and all white arrows.   ;)

I like both finishes. Gloss really brings out the grain and satin most guys prefer for hunting.

David, you can't kill anything like that!

Two4, great pics and thumbs up on using a Hill, but nobody said it wasn't POSSIBLE to have some success with a bright shiny bow...the percentages are simply lower.  And perhaps if I was hunting where deer were plentiful and getting many chances it wouldn't much matter if my bow glowed/flashed like a Christmas tree, eventually the opportunity for successwould present itself.  But, one was faced with having to hunt where deer were scarce and getting one good shot for the season would probably be the ONLY good shot for the season, I'd go for the duller-finished bows.

That said, shiny bows ARE pretty...I have a few for target shooting.   :)

I'm not knocking your choices either, just giving a little perspective. IMO my percentages have NOT been lowering using the gear I am.

If we all wanted to make things as easy as possible we would not be hunting with sticks in the first place.  That being said, if I never got out of the trees or ditched the camo I would not have realized how little those things matter

In the scheme of things maybe a shiny bow is not the end of the hunting world.

Happy Hunting.
