Title: January Hunting Advice?
Post by: dirtguy on January 03, 2017, 06:48:00 AM
For a variety of reasons, all good, I really haven't been able to hunt this season until now.  Fortunately, I live in CT, 4 miles away from some private land I can hunt until the end of January.

I welcome all advice on hunting during this late season and would love to put some venison in the freezer!

Thanks!

Just was out last night in WI. Had a buck with no antlers run a circle around me for ??? reason. No shot. It is important to find what they are eating and often they don't travel as far to and from that source. Dealing with weather here can be an issue and as deer are often close to where they eat it is important to get in as quiet as possible. Other than that, it's still deer hunting and if you're used to that it should work well. Good luck and stay warm!

Find the food source and you will find the deer. Can be very difficult at times in late season. Usually you will see nothing at all or the whole here at one time. Stay warm and have fun!

Late season food sources...love January hunting.

Ironically, the biggins in my locale are still moving routinely between two and four in the morning.

My two largest deer observed last season, both at 35 yards, were observed from my blind in January.

Hunt food sources and try to get an idea if they are moving throughout the day and if so hunt all day.

I checked your regs and baiting is allowed in zones 11 and 12.

Blacktail Bowhunter thanks for the tip.  I am now considering putting corn out.

Yep...food, food, food.  Find it and the deer will come.  The colder the better.  When really cold, get in early.

Are there any big swamps around where you hunt? During late season, I usually go into a big swamp, or sit right on the edge between the swamp and a food source. Like mentioned above, sometimes you won't see any, but when you do see them, they tend to be in large groups. Deer are lazy, and if you find a good trail, there's a good chance that they will use it as opposed to break a new trail through the snow. These are great places to set up ambushes, and I've been successful doing this several times, but that was before switching to trad.
