My bow finally got in! Super Kodiak #50 LH. Got a couple shots in with my the arrows I built and no catastrophes! Bow feels smoother and faster than my Sammick Sage of the same poundage. Love the way it feels in the hand. However, as expected, it is loud! What do yall find is the best products for silencing the shot?
Well get your brace height set and sometimes a heavier mass weight arrow will help .
Then you can tie on cat whiskers or yarn puffs at the quarters and that should have you in business .
My Cabelas "Warden" recurves get loud if I let the brace height drop much below 8". If I keep it above 8", they are MUCH quieter. Suggested heights for these bows are 7.5-8.25". So above 8" is on the high side, but still within recommendations.
FWIW, I don't use anything for silencers. I shoot 3Rivers B-50 continuous loop strings, 14 strand on the 40# and 16 strand on the 50#.
Best wishes,
Frank
Get the right brace height first, adequate weight arrows, work on consistent release, THEN add silencers to get the quietest performance.
Is it a newer Super Kodiak with the string Bear Archery supplies? What ever they use, it is very noisy. I made a B50 dacron string with catwhiskers for mine and it quieted right down.
Assuming arrow weight is adequate, brace height adjustment, cat whiskers, or yarn puffs. You can also wrap the string loops and down a little past where the string makes contact with bow limbs, with yarn. You will get it quiet if you experiment with these things. Get it as quiet as possible before add on's or they will be masking noise. Ken
Yes it is a 2016 SK. Heard good things about the hushpuppy and bow hush stuff...also the felt limb covers that are supposed to minimize string slap. I have not tuned the bow yet so I am hoping brace height will take care of some of it. Thanks for the input yall!
Recurve Addict, I also have a newer SK and it is super quiet. Here is my set up. Get some silencing felt pieces that you can cut out your own custom size. Cut the pieces big enough to go from just where the limb tips are cut out to accept the string loops down well past where the string just touches each limb. Then put a pair of brush buttons on the string so that the buttons touch the felt also, instead of just the bare limb. Then install a pair of Quiet Wool String silencers about a foot from each tip (about even with the Bear logos on the belly of each limb). I have tried all sorts of combinations on my SK and that thing is now about as quiet as a longbow. Good luck.
Also the brace height is set at about 8.25
Awesome Shooter#21! Ill be trying that out ASAP.
You can add to much stuff and lose performance, but you'll be quiet
Play around with it and get to know it a few hundred shots and then decide on best course of action.
A new better quality string would be a good $20 dollar investment from one our sponsor like Champions or 10 ring strings and others.
Proper brace as others have stated and finding the right arrow weight combo are all good first steps to take.
Me personally would do those things first and not overload my string with performance robbing weight. There's a "sweet spot" and good balance to be found in quieting assessories you need to work at finding it by shooting that bow.
A well made string and time spent tuning. Also, a good release.
Stiktamers. They work great and great brush guards
I have had a few Bear recurves that needed a brace height of 8.5" or more before they would get quiet.
Don't forget nocks also. Nocks that are too tight will make a bow loud.
And give Two Tracks' String Scallops a try.
Yep first thing is get rid of that factory string and get a good custom made one. all the difference in the world
Order an SBD string and some Navajo string silencers. Also, tweak the brace height.
I have a few super Kodiaks. Look no further you just bought one of the best bows out there. I have bob lee, predator, many many bears and Great Plains. My super Kodiaks are smooth, hard hitting and a pleasure to shoot. Matter of fact my 47# 1967-1/2 super K is faster than any bow I own. Even faster than my 50# bob lee. Noise can be fixed by changing brace height or shooting heavier arrows. Great purchase
X2 on string supplied with that bow.
Get a good quality string and find best brace height
and your good to go.
And I'll add, be careful putting any silencing material that fills up the string grooves. They're there for a reason.
I just got a Super Grizzly and the string is 18 strand Flemish FF. MY nocks were way to tight and it was noisy. I ordered a Endless FF 14 strand. I put the new string on and set the brace height same as the Flemish. Now the bow is quiet unless I pluck the string. I would recommend a new string and play with your brace height.
i would say try a 7 1/2 to 8" brace and some rubber cat whiskers.
My old kodiak is pretty quite like this and my grizzly is actually more quite than my longbow with just a pair of rubber whiskers on it.
Any of the above .............. and "LIMB SAVERS"!
I just got my recurve...it's recommended by brace height is 7 3/4..to 8 ..when I restring it I can only get 7 1\\4. Or so through string twist ...can someone tell me what to do..it's a new string..sbd..bow was not shot by previous owner much... Assenhimer. 58 in TD..#55. Thx
Just give your string a few twists to shorten it up to increase the brace height or a few twists the other way to loosen it and decrease brace height. I'ts a bit of a learning process but after a while you will figure out how many twists are needed. I try to work in 1/8th" increments when playing with the brace.
I agree with getting a new string first, then go from there with the tuning advice you've been given here.
