I've had two bowyers lined up for a short shorty longbow...one had a change in career and the other just could not find the time....
Now I'm wondering who else I could talk to for one of those 52" or less recurves...I have a specific need for one.
Any suggestions would be great....thanks. :campfire:
Two tracks Ambushh (50") gets my vote...chuck is a superb bowyer
Toelke Kestrel....HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Have you talked to Sierra Blanca Bows?
Also try Mike At Maddog. He's built me several based on the old Rocky Mtn recurves.
The TimberHawk Stoke is my favourite short recurve but is 54". I have never shot one but Sierra Blanco makes a good looking repro of a Rocky Mountain I have been wanting to try.
Mike, it is great to see you back!

Thanks, Jess. When I hurt my elbow last year and couldn't shoot, I just kinda faded away for a bit. Now I'm able to get back at it. I even have 3 African trips planned for 2017 !
Hard to be Toelke, I believe the Kestrel is now the Troll.
I would love to try an Ambush, but loved my Kestrel! I would recommend one! The one I had (before my error) was #45. It was as fast and shot the same arrows as my #57 RD longbows. I cna't say I am fond of the new name "troll", kestrel seemed much more appropriate for a small fast bow.
Hard to beat a 1962 Kodiak Magnum...I recently bought a very nice one for 150 bucks...not a big investment even if you do not like it...built with Brazilian Rosewood and 3M glass that are no longer available
DDavr
Hard to beat the Teolke kestrel, probably the only short bow I've been impressed with.
I liked my Toelke Kestrel alot that's 52".Its now called the Troll as mentioned above. You would not have a long wait on the Toelke.Smooth shooter!
I would also look at Javaman and Shrew. The Shrew was recently redesigned.
I also like the Red wing Hunter that's 52 inches if you want a vintage recurve that shoots excellent IMO.If you could find one.The 58 inchers are more common.
...the kestrel is way nicer than the kodiak magnum IMO
Toelkes are my favorite bows, short wait time and are always spot on for the specs wanted. RER Bows also make great short recurves. My 52" arroyo is super smooth I think I would prefer the grip on the retro better but I still shoot it pretty good
Earlier I could not fathom ever being able to shoot a bow shorter than 60" and for some that was too short for my draw. Then I got the Robertson Wolfer at 58"...after shooting 62, 64 and 66" bows for 25+ years it feels so small and light in hand. It is a pure joy to shoot...so much I dropped my longbow for a bear hunt last year and decided to take the new Wolfer 2.5 weeks out because I liked how it shot so much with the new arrows I built.
I would be interested if similar results would be gained by what I consider extremely short bows like Terri is speaking of...I have always assumed they were finicky, sensitive to bow arm input, and were more like a souped up 4 banger that has been over bored and nitrous added. Does the job and does it well...but sooner or later going to blow up on you. LOL
Following....
Toelke kestrel/troll (new name) is a top bow: really performing, super smooth up to 29" and one of the quieter recurve I saw.
RER arroyo 54" would be the second option (but they are not made by the Termatt family any longer) as Fedora isn't making bows any longer.
Those 3 bows are really ahead in that league for hunting purpose.
There are plenty of vintage short recurves out there with lots of years left in them. The kodiak magnum is probably the most popular of the one pc shorties.
I believe the line of Cascade 3pc. takedowns are the best, but you gotta search for one since Steve Gorr is no longer in business.
Sierra Blanca!
What length and weight are you looking for?
Sent you a text!
Tracy
I've never been a fan of short bows but the VPA Vapor riser(13") with medium Sebastion Flute carbon foam limbs - which makes a 56" bow - changed that opinion. I love that combination! Shoots as good or better than any of the many longer bows I've tried over the years.
You could go with the short limbs and get a 54" bow...Not sure if there are any limbs that will get you anything shorter with that riser...VPA could probably help you with info on that and they are a sponsor....
SS will get 52" depending on your draw length.
Geez, I have a 60" Asyrian ordered from Javaman and I thought that was short.
Terry, what is the certain application that needs a short bow?
Just the other day I shot my daughter's 35lb Kodiak magnum. They really are nice bows.
guy named Hoots or something like that used to make some short recurves. I dont see the website any longer so maybe he isnt in the business.

You may want to look at a Lone Wolf Banchee. It's a '50's style recurve at 52". Very smooth shooter!!
50 or 52 in. depending on your draw length.

As I recall, it was a 1965 first year made Bear Magnum 48" @ 48# that I acquired a few years back, so that would make it over 40 years old, I shot the snot out of that bow, very accurate from close up, and out to 20 yards and you know what, it never blew up !
Get a Greatree Khan. 48" and smooth to about 28-29. Won't break the bank, too.
The Ambush is awesome....a very very surprisingly well mannered bow

Kiko Tovar used to make a killer short recurve, Terry...and I bet if you looked on the Footed Shaft, or perhaps put a classified in PBS you could probably find one.
I think I remember them being 44 inches AMO
Rodney Wright, stalker 46"
Wild Horse Creek bows by Mike Dunnaway. Love my Mariah. Smooth and zero stack to my 29.5in draw.

3 part....1-recovery bow thick cover here in east...2-short shot trail crossings and mergers....3-One lane shot from low tree stand in travel corridor funnel.
Again....thick cover ambush and recovery.

Got a pic of limb width?....How.wide if I provided limb veneers?
how short for 27.5 draw?...50 or 52.
Terry, coffee jitters this morning. :-)

Wow....44 inches?....not sure I want to go that short.But I'll check k it out..thx Ray
What kind of draw weight you looking for? The finished width is 1 5/8s
50 -54 Sir
I got a 50 in.I could send you to try it is 47 @28 I think (have to look to be sure) :)
I would be interested I try your bow, when Terry is done with it.
That crooked Stick bow looks awful good to me.
The extra weight in the TD riser might mitigate some of the twitchy shooting qualities that such a short recurve could have.
If I were in your shoes, Terry, I would give it a test drive. I mean, why the heck not? You might just discover THE short, close-quarters bow that is right for you.
If you could find a used Cascade bow they are about as smooth as they get, shoot awesome and very quiet..only sold/traded mine because it was 55# and my shoulders are shot.
Mike(Crooked Stic)makes a awesome bow also, have his 3 pc. longbow and owned a couple of his recurves..

I'm on it....I love 60 inchers...my goto bows...got longer bows too that fit the bill at times...and a couple of shorter bows...but need a short shorty to round out my tool box.
I'll email you my addy and test out that bow if you do indeed have it.....thx
I do have the bow just was not sure of the weigh until I looked it is 47@28. Yes Todd when Terry is done I may have him send it to you. Sounds like a plan will get it out Monday.
I now have the Crooked Stik...and will be shooting it this afternoon.
Thanks!!!
I've got a 50" Browning Cobra, and a 52" Wing Thunderbird. Both nice bows. 52 and 48" Bear Mag and Super Mag are nice as well. Mike Steliga (sp?) of Bruin Bows made some really smooth pulling shorty's too.
7 lakes makes the sawed off recurve but it's 54in. Good out to a 29in. Draw . His recurve has a longbow grip on it so you may like that being that you shoot longbow . Mike can have it to you in 4-6 weeks and at a good price.
Hey Terry,Tom here.
Dina shoots a Gene Sanders recurve, made right down the road from you in Dallas Ga.
She has killed over a dozen deer with it and it is her go to bow.
I don't know if he still makes bows but it may be worht checking.
Her bow is 52 at 28 and is 52 inches and is a fast little bow.
Thanks!
Crooked Stic review in a few...
Gene Sanders did make a fine Little recurve, but he passed a way a few years ago. The Cascade NightHawk Magnum is a great short recurve, but they are hard to find. Good luck with your search, I have always had an affinity for short recurves.
By the way, Gene's bow was called the Evolution.
I've been looking into getting a shorter bow myself. Would definitely help when hunting in a blind and in the thickets. That Crooked Stic looked like a sweet little shooter!
The Crooked Stic is a really cool little bow. Handles well, dead in the hand and pretty quiet...I'm willing to bet I could get it as quiet as my longbows.
At 27.5-28 inches drawn, no real finger pinch.....smooth out to about 24 and then you can feel the power build....not really stacking at all, just firming up a little as she goes.(which I like since its only 47#s)
Nice craftsmanship and great mat finish work.
I found that it likes the Arrow Dynamic Trad Lites best.
The bow is now on the way to toddster.
Thanks for letting me shoot it Mike!!!
Terry check with Kent Roberts and see if he has a TimberGhost you can shoot. They are great shooting bows.
Helms deep from Gregg is worth a look.
Tenbrook Archery ..... Cody made a great little 43" recurve
Terry I find what you said about firming up to be true. DFC showed it to be 3 1/3 per in on the last inches. That is why the 50 in. is 28 or under and probably better for shorter draw.
Mike, I think it is perfect the way it snugs up ...I wouldn't change a thing.
Thanks for your input Terry.
If it doesn't have to be a longbow and you like vintage bows..Browning made some great short bows.
No...I kinda like for it to be a recurve to tell you the truth...and around 50-54 #s.
I like Mike's a lot...and strongly considering it.
Just still weighing options...like maybe a 2 piece no tools quick assemble....to put in back of fly fishing vest.
Just curious what is the tip to tip length overall strung?? 46.5" too much??
Bob...I didn't measure it...maybe Mike can answer it as I already shipped it to Toddster....
What you got in mind?
Give me a call...
46.5 Bob why do you ask?
I was just curious, to me a short bow should be measured tip to tip stung. AMO does not tell actual overall length. 46.5" is short....
