Post by: Mountain State Archer on December 14, 2016, 11:25:00 PM
what type of wood stains do you guys recommend to use for staining your shafts?  Oil base, Alcohol base, water base? I use gasket lacquer to seal but have never stained before

thanks

I like any water based interior stains .
I use a cherry blossom pink to stain my hunting arrows with a mahogany dabbling .
Your imagination is the only limitation .....

I am a big fan of the Stalker Stains from Lost Nation Archery in Sturgis, Michigan.  The colors are good and they are good people to deal with.  I use Helmsman Spar urethane and a gasket system to seal the shafts.  They hold up very well for me.

I use alcohol base with Rit dye. Oil base does not work very well with gasket laquer and the wiper system.

Alcohol base aniline dye, sealed with gasket lacquer.

I used red dye powder I mixed with DNA under GL. I bought the powder at Rocklers Wood Workers store.
A less expensive solution may be leather dyes. I have used oil based stains in the past but can not recall using GL over them.
Not sure about water based and GL either.

RIT and alcohol is easy to use and just about any water based finish. I prefer water based Minwax in semi-gloss.

One property of aniline dye is you can keep putting on more coats to make it darker or use alcohol and steel wool to make it lighter something hard to do with oil based stains. Very user friendly.
