Title: Win&Win Carbon and Hi Tech Bows and Risers.....thoughts?
Post by: Nala on December 14, 2016, 08:33:00 AM
Hey all.

I don't follow the new Bows that come out or the ones that are "hot."   The only way I see them is if they are in the Lancaster catalog or a thread here about them.

I'm talking about these Carbon Risers and bows, some made by Win&Win.  Of course there's other materials that some bowlers use to get the results they are after.

I watched some videos on one of these recurves by Win&Win.  I can't recall the name of it, but Lancaster carries it.  That bow looked, shot and sounded awesome.  The only complaint the guy that was testing it had was that the bow was too good.  I've read some other comments that echo those same feelings on these bows.

I'd like to hear from you all about these so called HIGH TECH recurves and Risers.  Would you own one?   If you do own one of these bows, Risers or limbs, how about posting your thoughts and experiences with it?
If you have any pics of it, please post them and show them off.

Thanks for your time.
Larry

I now own ILF metal risers so yes, I'd buy one if I thought it was any better than what I have. I did shoot a Win&Win 17" carbon riser last year and it was very nice but the limbs were too heavy for me so hard to evaluate. The bow shot nice though.

As far as carbon/foam limbs yes. I own two sets of BF Extremes which actually have a layer of wood and foam in the cores. Best limbs I've ever shot.

I shoot a Morrison Phoenix but I have not tried W&W's carbon riser. I did have a set of their foam cored limbs and still have a set of SF Ultimate Pro limbs, both shoot fantastic. My favs are Borders 6.5 foam cores and I am considering a set of 7's or 7.5. Dryad makes a very good set of limbs as well.

Got a Hoyt dorado with TT Carbon extreme limbs. They are super smooth and fast, and have made me sell all wood limbed recurves. I have a win&twin black wolf on order, can't wait!

I have two metal riser recurves. One is a Trad Tech Titan II by Lancaster with BF Extreme limbs.  I have it set up with an adjustable springy rest.  Very solid bow and limbs.  To be honest it is probably the easiest bow I own to tune and shoot accurately.

My only mild complaint with my TT setup is that it is less quiet than my wooden riser bows. I'm thinking it is either the limb fit (metal on metal) or maybe the harmonics of metal risers?

I hunted with it a season but I choose to hunt with wood riser recurves (blacktails) these days because of the aesthetics. And I shoot the Blacktails nearly the same.

I have not seen or held a carbon riser. I'll be at the ATA show for a day of meetings in January.  I might stop by Lancaster's booth to see what they have.

I have a Morrison 17" metal ILF riser that is really nice, but I don't have a set of those sweet carbon limbs to make it a fireballer like what some of you all have.
I'd like to try a set of those really nice limbs just to see what kind of a difference they would make compared to the ones I have now.  Right now I have a set of KAP Challenger Carbon limbs, short, 38 pounds on a 25" riser.  I've had them 10 years or so.  The name is a bit of a misnomer.  These aren't carbon limbs like what everyone thinks.  They are wood, foam with a layer of carbon.  At least that's how I understand them to be.  They aren't made any more, but were pretty popular back when I got these.  As I recall they weren't that expensive.

Anyone have any suggestions on what a good set of ILF limbs would be but are not really expensive?  You know, something that would give close to the performance of these limbs talked about with all these really good setups, but would not cost over $200 per set?

Thanks all

Look in the Product Reviews forum.  You'll see my writeup on my Win & Win Black Wolf in there complete with Chrono results and pictures.

I've been looking at the SF forged 25" riser to start shooting Olympic Style. With both shoulders now rebuilt at 63 I can finally shoot again, but have to stay under 40#. So the Olympic Style with 30# limbs will let me shoot all year and can still shoot trad with my Centaur 40# by next hunting season....without overdoing it

I have the Win Win carbon foam limbs now on a Hoyt aluminum riser.  Gives you pause as the bow shoots way better than I likely will ever be able to.

I've shot a few carbon risers.  Though they are as stiff, perhaps stiffer than wood, I actually found them lighter in the hand than I wanted.  I like a little more mass in the riser of a recurve to steady the bow while aiming, and to absorb shock at the release.

The risers I shot were shorter, though, 14-16 inches.  Maybe at the 23-25-inch length of Olympic style risers, the reduced weight is a good thing.

If I liked the bow and I shot noticably better without adding wheels or sights and the price wasn't prohibitive and the bow was robust enough to take on a backpack elk hunt etc etc, I'd buy it! But, the "if I liked the bow" quote above is starting to move me back toward wood veneer limbs and some classic beauty! It's just cooler to look down at a pretty bow when you're taking it on a walk in the woods!

I personally prefer one piece bows that are primarily made out of wood because of the way they look and feel. It's much more natural and better looking in my opinion.

Less loud than other materials as well since wood is a good dampener.

I avoid bows that have alloy risers and carbon/foam limbs because they tend to have a sporty high tech look to them.
