I was given a Howatt Deluxe NE Plus, Fifty Four recurve with out a bowstring. It is stamped 56, I assume that is pounds and F691 is written on the bow with a fine tip permanent marker. I would like to make a replacement from B-50. Does anybody know string length for this bow?
If there's no length marking, and you don't have a string that fits (or is at least close) to use as a gauge...
Use a flexible tape measure (or a string, then measure the string). Start at the "top" of one string groove, follow the contour of the limb, through the center of the riser, follow the contour of the other limb, to the "top" of the other string groove. Subtract 3-4". That's going to be close with most bows.
A tillering string with a single loop on one end and tie a timber hitch on the other will work also.
Thanks for info, it's supposed to rain this weekend and I think I will try and get started on it.

And you could also post on the History/Collecter forum for that model bow!
Call or email Ted Fry at Raptor Archery, he may know. Ted is a sponsor and familiar with Howatt Bows.
Frank, thank you for suggestion, I might do that if I can't get it figured out.
Hud, thank you, I sent an email to Ted, hope to hear back from him, I'm guessing he's pretty busy this time of year.

Chris , you did get my email correct? Pretty much what Chad said, for Howatts (old ones) I recommend B-50 and 4" shorter , start with an 8" brace and go from there.
