After a 5 year hiatus, I decided to pick up my Horne Brushbow and hunt the late season for Blacktail. I actually missed this guy opening weekend and realized I wasn't picking a spot due to a case of buck fever.
When he came in this time, I talked myself through the shot. I used a clicker to help my form and consistency, which appears to be working out quite well.
Horne brushbow 58" amo 42 @ 28
GT 3555 full length blems with 50 grain inserts and 125 grain 2 blade Magnus Broadhead.
I was able to capture the hunt on video.

Paul... remember that Black Widow you sold me years ago? The first thing I did to it was use some phosphorus craft paint and paint "PICK A SPOT" just above the sight window.
Sometimes we just need reminded.
Again, good job!

Congratulations on a beautiful animal! I have my problems with Target Panic and Buck Fever. Would you mind sharing a little more on what helped you gain control of your shot? I am eager to try new (and good old..) ideas!! Sometimes I am able to pick a spot and make a kill, other times I shoot over the top of the whole critter!

Dan,
I set up a 3D target in my front room and shot from my up stairs hallway. The clicker was very key to my success as well as picking a different spot on the deer target with every shot.
It appears to me when shooting at the same spot every time, you develop muscle memory and it's easy to be consistent on a target, and that does not replicate a hunting scenario.
Picking a different spot to hit every time I shoot, is what I believe helped me a lot. The most important thing I learned to do was breathe, relax as much as possible, be patient and talk myself through the shot.
It's basically the blank bale method but on a deer target vital.
Thank you very much for your help! I am going to add your methods to my training!
Dan
Nice!! Congrats
Very neat animal and hunting locale.
Congrats and thanks for sharing.
BTW: I use a string tracker for turkeys and just tape it to the riser with black tape. Works great. Goes on and off fast and the tape leaves no residue. FWIW.
Great work... well earned Blacktail!
Congrats--but, sorry to say that not picking a spot doesn't totally go away--at least for me. I'll have a good run of "luck", and then I miss. And I relive that moment...I was ready to go, and then the deer looked up, or another deer walked in, or I have to shoot now before it gets behind that bush. And then it dawns on me, I didn't pick a spot.
Very nice sir!
Nice Blacktail, love the dark antlers.
Beautiful deer!
Some people just never learn. Don't you know you'll never kill a deer until you camo that piece of broom handle?
Murray
That's what's up. Great work and congrats. Those blackmails are on my hit list. Someday I'll hunt them I hope lol
Congrats! They sure are beautiful animals, aren't they?

My favorite animal to pursue. Cam's book really ignited my interest about 10 years ago.

There is a lesson to be learned here. PICK A SPOT GUYS!!
Thanks for reminding us Paul! Even old guys forget this in the heat of the moment (old as in me, not Paul).
