Title: Fred Bear does it again.
Post by: Mudd on October 27, 2007, 11:40:00 PM
I watched over the past few years as my daughter(Marijane)started to be drawn to the "darkside" She got herself a wheelie and did herself proud. I mean she put the time and effort into figuring out how to shoot it and shoot it good.
I think since this season started she began having some frustrations with modern archery that are different from what she grew up with. We have our challenges with tradittional gear but usually once we find the remedy it pretty much stays fixed for some time. Not the same can be said about hauling around a bow with lots of nuts, bolts and screws to viberate loose allowing this to change without much notice.
I was able to trade into an old Bear Grizzly 56" 40#@28" and this morning before leaving for the woods I put it in her car with a note asking her to check it out for me. She works P/T at one of better gun and archery shops with an indoor range.
Tonight she comes home telling what a sweet bow it was to shoot and that she was able to keep her 3 arrow groups in less thatn the bull on the indoor ranges targets. I was feeling kinda punky after hunting all day in the rain yesterday so I decided to stay home. She is headed out to the woods(or so I thought) after about 30 minutes she comes back in the house with a handfull of my arrows(one tipped with one of her broadheads) exclaiming "I can kill a deer with this!" She said out to 20 yards she could hit a leaf  3 times in a row and asked for permission to carry it to the woods. I asked about her compound to which she replied "I put it away, I can't count on it, I have to adjust it every time before I head to the woods and even then I can't trust its stayed where it is supposed to."
The "prodigal daughter" seems to have returned! Kinda makes a Trad-dad proud.
Thanks for taking time to read this lenghty rambling of a "Proud Papa"
God bless,Mudd

ps Quite a few of the old-timers will remember her as that little blonde tike that got some bigtime help from the real bowyers(lots of names found in Traditional Bowyers Bilble and some of the better ones on here) at the MoBoJam as she made her 1st bow........ sic-em Woog!!!!!

Wow, makes me wish I had a daughter! Your tale put a smile on my face, and I will dream of leaves with three holes in them tonight. Happy hunting!

You're a lucky man to have a daughter who enjoys shooting with you regardless of what she shoots. I wish my boys were so inclined. Cool story.

Wow amazing story. I Have two daughters and a son.My son had a bow when he was 5 shot every day for months. Then he just gave it up and told me "Dad I could never kill an animal". My two daugters.... well the one won't even eat anything that has babies. She's getting better though now she'll eat canned tuna, fried calamari, some fish. Absolutely no meat or poultry.I think it all stems from when  my wife told them I was going out to kill Bambi when they were young. Imagine that.

Thanks for the kind words. Now she has announced that she wants to build her own bow but this time she wants to make a laminated bow. That's out of my league.... I suspect you guys are gonna see her start posting on here with a boatload of questions.
Hang on... I can see the flames building...lol
Been there, done that....lol
God bless,Mudd

I just shot a 58" Kodiak Hunter ('67) this weekend at a Fall Festival (shoot the ballon thing) and I loved it.  I can believe that these old bows can be very seductive.

Mudd, that is awesome. I am hoping and praying my children will share my love of trad archery when they get older. Congratulations sir.
