Title: Leather for crafting
Post by: dtgiacomini on October 27, 2007, 09:21:00 PM
I was looking in the How-To section and was thinking about making a few leather back quivers, I was wondering where any of you guys go to buy the leather used for crafting things like this.  Thanks,
Dominic.

I know this won't be of much help but in Amarillo there is a place called Panhandle Leathers that sells to boot and saddle makers. They have bookoos of big scrap real cheap. I bought a piece that I have made four quivers and countless armguards from for $20.00 and still have some left. Last time I was in there, I saw some leather that had realtree camo on it! The guy said it was cheap leather but I bet some guys would think a quiver made from it would be neat. If there are any saddle makers near you, give them a call and see where they get their leather.

Hey Dominic thanks to Herb here is where i get my leather now. They have never sent me a bad piece, the shipping is free for orders over $70 and if you have a problem with what they send you...your fault or theirs....they will pay for it to be shipped back!

I usually get the Oak Sides 3/4oz to 7/8oz depending on what i am making...7/8oz for most quivers. At 20 sq ft it cost around $80.00

If you are only going to make one quiver and a few guards then try and find a local place that has scrap pieces big enough......a Tandy's store and you can usually get scraps at saddle maker shops.

Hope this helps!

I haven't had real good luck buying leather mail order, so I try to make a pilgrimage once a year to buy the leather I might want, or buy it locally knowing I will pay a little more for it.  I get to inspect the hides that way.  I don't know where in Illinois you are, but might be worth paying a little extra to be able to see what you are buying.  IMHO

Ok thanks, Portugeejn I was gonna make a trip to a Tandy's thats a few hours a way and do just that. I was looking online, but all the remnants and scraps were to iffy and I couldn't tell what I would be getting.

I know this thread is old, but I am looking to do the same project as the initial poster.  I am not aware of any saddle makers in my area, nor did any turn up during an internet search.  Here's my question...

Could a taxidermist/butcher sell me some extra buckskin? And could he prepare it for leather work?

I would say if your a hunter and keep the hides from your deer, elk or what ever you may hunt, thats probably the best place to get hides for back quivers, and a hide covered quiver looks better that a plain piece of leather anyday. Got Friends? Ask for their Hides if they don't use them.

I also use Tandy, have one here in town. I use 7/8 oz for my quivers, armguards and holsters.

What kind of hide normally?  Buckskin, cow, bull, etc?

I like Tandy, but don't overlook Goodwill and thrift stores.  There's some nice leather skirts and purses that can be put to good use as quivers, tabs, gloves and armguards.

Cool, didn't realize Tandy has a lot of locations.  Just found out they have one not far from here in New Orleans.
