Title: Boeuf WMA Hog Hunt #2. ( updates )
Post by: Crittergetter on November 15, 2016, 08:45:00 PM
Well folks, it's time we start getting the ball rolling on the second annual hog hunt at Daniels place. Well be camping out on the border of the Wma just like last year. We had an AWESOME time!!  We need to set a limit of 10-12 because of lack of room for everyone to camp. Everyone that came last year has first dibs on a spot. We can start a list of names of who's coming and put together a list of alternates on a first post basis incase any of the original members can't make it.
I don't know about y'all but I have been looking forward to this!!!!
Hunt dates will be Jan 19-22.  You can post here and you can also send me a pm for mine and Daniels contact info. As we get closer I'll see if admins can set us up with our own forum page.
So....... who's in??

Man, I really wish I could make it, but I have to put everything on hold after Jan 1st for work related reasons.  Cancelles one hunt already, and another will most likely be cancelled too.

how much is it and where?

The only cost involved is the price of your license and getting to and from the hunt. I'll see if I can post a link to last years thread. If anyone else can post it feel free because I'm not very computer savvy and may take me a while to figure it out.

So that is in La?

I checked the Beouf WMA website and they don't list hogs as a huntable species. Is the hog hunting good in there?
Title: Re: Boeuf WMA Hog Hunt #2. ( updates )
Post by: Crittergetter on November 17, 2016, 07:45:00 PM
Yes it is in Louisiana. Not sure why hogs aren't listed on the site. I thought they were last year. Regardless, they have way more than their fair share of hogs! Read through the link that Joe provided above. A lot of close encounters and shots taken. Some of which weren't told. I think the hog hunting is better there than where I live because the woods are more open and better chance of spotting them before they smell or hear you. The stuff I hunt in here is so dang thick it becomes very frustrating!

This does look like a load of fun. It would be a 7-8 hr. drive for me, so it could be a possibility if I can afford it when the time comes. I'm going to keep a close eye on this thread, and if I can make it work, I'll throw my name in there (if there's any spots open by then). Either way, I look forward to seeing how this one unfolds...

Bump this one again. Sorry I've been slacking guys. I'll get a list together tomorrow of who's in and who's a possibility . That way we can keep track on the head count and if anyone has to back out someone can take their spot.

Ok guys, I've put a list together form those that have replied here and via pm. We are up to 7 of the original members that are committed to coming back this year. Yes sir, we have to limit the head count because we are camping on Daniels father in laws place next to the wma and there is limited space. If anyone wants in I'll have a list going possible alternates to fill a spot incase someone has to back out.

Ttt,  I need to post the cost of the non resident license info. I think it was 87.00 for a 3 day non-res license last year and you could hunt deer and hogs. A wma permit was not required with a 3 day no resident license.  I'll see if I can find a link.

Hey Randy, I've been looking and can't find a 3 day license on the LA wildlife and fisheries website.
 http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/licenses/hunting-licenses
I think they may have changed the NR fee's for the 2016/2017 season.  I'll call the Monroe field office today and see what they have to say.
Title: Re: Boeuf WMA Hog Hunt #2. ( updates )
Post by: Jon Kaw on December 12, 2016, 12:32:00 PM
OK, I found out where I was mistaken.
I just got off the phone with the Monroe office and they said you need a 1 day deer license for each day that you hunt.  I was looking for a 3 day license.
    :knothead:
That means it's $36.00 for each day.
The regulations say that this is an all inclusive license and no other license or WMA permit is required.

2. Akdd ( Marty )
3. Jon Kaw ( my friend )
4. John146 ( Tod )
5. Tim ( Todd friend )
6. Kip
7. Hackbow ( Darren- my friend)

Awbowman  (Fred) is a possible
Jbpharmd ( Jacob) is a possible
Terry and Kade will be hunting as well but not camping.
So there's still room!

Ok guys, we need to start coordinating with each other for the hunt. So we can figure out things like where to meet ( for any new guys) and who's bringing what foods ect....
we still have access to the forum page a little ways down on the home page that was set up for us last year. If your part of the hunt and need the pass word just send me a pm.
Also you can go to Daniels web site for HCBstrings and click on his forum page. It's real easy to register and we can discuss things there as well . Also that way Daniel can talk with everyone too.

Well its official! Work approved my time off and more importantly the wife gave me the go ahead. I will drive up after work on Thursday and I'll have to leave Saturday.

I'll cook an etoufee or a sauce picante of some sort. Depends on whether I can find crawfish this time of year.
Kip, I take it you'll have a way to cook rice since you are making a gumbo?

Jacob  I will have a 2 burner stove but the camp we pitch tents next to has elect.so a rice cooker can also work (pass the hat for our use of elect at camp). If you need crawfish there is a crawfish plant a mile off of the interstate in Whitville /Ville Platte area. They sell maybe this year stock if catching but also have last year vacum packed stock if needed.See you soon I have lots of family in the medical field working /living in Laf. you may know some of them.Kip

Title: Re: Boeuf WMA Hog Hunt #2. ( updates )
Post by: Crittergetter on January 05, 2017, 10:03:00 PM
I'd recommend bringing a good pair of rubber boots. Likely to have a lot of low areas holding water if we get any more rain between now and then. Last year there was water ever. Hopefully the weather will hold out and there won't be any flooding this year. That will open up a LOT more area to hunt. But the hogs may be harder to locate. It's a good trade off IMO

It seams to me we're lacking a little in the enthusiasm department this year!!  From my talks with Daniel  I've deducted that there is a LOT more area to hunt this year!! That alone gets me excited! I love seeing new places, especially with a bow in my hand. It does help that I'm an optimist every time I step into the woods! Lol
I'll be bringing my 4Wheeler and a trailer so that I can help everyone that wishes to reach those far away places and save on a bunch of walking. And make dragging a hog several mile a lot easier!! This should open a lot more opportunities to hunt places we neve even saw last year.  I'll also have 2-3 lockons with me that we can place on trails and crossing  if anyone decides they want to sit a few mornings or evenings and try to get a deer.(which is legal with your license)

I will also be bringing breakfast burritos for everyone again.  (I think we ate 50 something burritos last year lol) Gotta keep you guys full of energy for all the miles you will be putting on!  And I'll bring the ever essential load of Fire wood!!
IT AINT CAMPING WITHOUT A CAMP FIRE!!!!!
If someone could bring a few targets that would be awesome. It's always a good time to shoot around camp between hunts and give each other a hard time or a congratulatory slap on the back!!

No lack of enthusiasm here! I am cooking a shrimp etoufee tonight to freeze for the hunt, have been shooting my bow daily, been wearing my new boots around the house to break them in, and can't stop thinking about being in the woods!
I read all the regulations on hunting on WMA's (which I've never done before) and it looks pretty straight forward. Just wondering if we will need an orange vest and hat since the "firearm experimental Quality deer season" is open until the 20th.
I like a lot of area to roam. I used to sit in one place all the time when I would rifle hunt, scared to move, but the most rewarding hunts always involve a stalk!
I have a target or two I can throw in the truck.

open  firearms  deer  hunting  season  and
possessing buckshot, slugs, a primitive fire
arm, or a centerfire firearm shall display on
their head, chest and/or back a total of not
less  than  400  square  inches  of  “HUNTER
ORANGE.”

and

WARNING: Deer hunters are cautioned to
watch for persons hunting other game or
engaged    in    activities    not    requiring  “Hunter Orange” or “Blaze Pink.”

I take this to mean that it's not required to wear orange if your not carrying a firearm.  I'm not saying that it wouldn't be a good idea to wear orange during firearm season, just that it doesn't seem to be required if you're hunting with a bow.

Looking at the deer seasons I couldn't find a "experimental quality deer season" listed.  What page did you find that on?  If we stay in Caldwell parish and Catahoula parish west of the Beouf river there shouldn't be any modern firearms in season, though there is a primitive firearm season the 16-22.

Looks like we will be required to wear full orange till the 20th because of the experimental deer season and then after that we are required to wear an orange cap while hunting on the ground because of the rabbit and squirrel season that runs till the end of February. It will also be Bucks only and we will have to abide by the antler restrictions for the e.q.d.s. Till the 20th.  After that any deer is legal.  I will call the headquarters tomorrow to confirm.    (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/8A5AF342-8431-4664-8176-7BAB6D0504B2_zpsnck7ngqn.png) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/8A5AF342-8431-4664-8176-7BAB6D0504B2_zpsnck7ngqn.png.html)    (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/A4642162-6D5D-47CB-BA73-F97AD43D4664_zpsh0i0z7cq.png) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/A4642162-6D5D-47CB-BA73-F97AD43D4664_zpsh0i0z7cq.png.html)

I know this is not ideal and definitely not what we had in mind.. I spoke with daniel this morning and he agrees that it is to late to try to change the dates. With people having taken off time from work and some traveling. So we will make the best of it and have a good time regardless!!
I for one know that with a little effort we can get away from any possible rifle hunters.  (Which should be minimal because it ends on a week day when most people are still working)

Thanks for clearing that up, Randy.  That's what I get for looking at general regulations and not those specific to the WMA.  It's going to be a good time for sure!

Thanks Randy, that is what I was seeing on page 66. I'm not really worried about having to wear a vest, just want to make sure everyone is legal.

I was hoping it wouldn't be overrun with rifle hunters. Like you said, it is a weekday, and with the antler restrictions it should keep some of them at bay.

This is from an email Daniel sent me.

"There isn't any reason to be concerned with the rifle season being in.  The rifle hunt will only be going on on friday, which in my opinion is out "scouting day".  At this time of the year, and on this particular reserve, the people are scarce.  To be sure everyone is on the same page.  The time that I will be able to hunt will be possibly thurday evening(depending on when I am able to get away from work, threw sunday.  You are free to show up anytime you want on Thursday, but I will not be able to be down there much sooner than 3 on thursday. My father in law will be there and will show everyone where to set up, should any of you choose to get there before I am able to be there.  We may be able to get out and search a little thursday evening, but the general plan is for people to split up and try to locate some pigs, of hopefully, lots of pigs in several different locations and then we get a game plan to take some out.

I will be down there thursday evening as soon as I can get away from work, but I can't promise exactly what time i'll be able to be there yet.  I see that several people have meals planned out, that is great!  I will be bringing a pot of taco soup, it looks like we will be eating like kings.

The water levels are almost non existent in comparison to what we dealt with last year.  the only down side I see is I haven't seen near as much hog sign as I usually do, but I haven't been down as much as I usually do.

IF anyone has any questions, please feel free to call/text me at 3185473756.  I look forward to a great weekend with you fellas.

Addition:
You will have access to everything we have(Kip).

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Time to start weather-watching. It may be dry now, but with Marty and me involved, just plan on water. Check out the forecast at the link below. At least the temps look to be comfortable. If we kill anything we'll need to get meat on ice unlike last year when we could've just hung it in any tree.

I agree with Daniel and Randy. Should not be too many people on that last day.     Most places you have to park and then walk in so even if there are some deer hunters Friday we should be able to see if there is a pile of them or just a few. May even get to talk to them about where they are going and go another direction. Most of the walk in trails and ATV trails pass through areas where you could hunt both sides of the road.

Rain chances and temps are as follows as of now: Friday- 10%- High 68, Saturday 50% High 66, Sunday 20%, High 63. Lows around 50 every morning so not too bad. The showers may make things more quiet for stalking too.   :archer2:

Last year the hogs I saw were all very nice size. 2 sows with piglets. Each sow was about 175 pounds. One other pig that was about 110 and then the 6 pigs that came running by me and Kip! They were in the 125-150 range. I guess they made us nervous because we make those shots at the archery tournaments when the pig comes by on the cable every time!   :dunno:

You know I'm yankin' your chain Roy. Why don't you take a few vacation days from retirement and come join us? I'd enjoy watching a Yinzer and Cajuns compete for the best campfire stories. We could probably video that and sell it!

Not sure I like where the forecast is headed. Looking a little wetter and warmer than ideal, but no doubt we'll make the best of it and have a great time. I'll bring some extra coolers for all the meat we'll need to get on ice.

LOL Wayne! It's easier to get turned around in those big swamps than in the mountains. However, it's easier to walk out of the swamp in the dark - fewer cliffs and no beetle kill or boulder fields. But you can bet my pack is prepared in either place anymoe. One night lost and sleeping on the ground is one too many!

Good luck in FL!

That stinks Jon, get better! Hope to see you in the not-too-distant future.

My plans have changed a little. I should still arrive approximately 7p on Thursday, but will need to leave by mid-afternoon Saturday. So I only have 1.5 days to hunt. You early guys please have a hog tied up for me.

Randy is not kidding about rain when we hunt. Other than a couple times when it's been just him and me, we have endured rain from steady to full-blown monsoon. I'm not sure if it is bad luck, a dark, cursed, hog-hunting cloud that follows me or if it is a combination of me and Marty being at the same place at the same time. That poor guy comes to TX and LA from AK thinking he can warm up and dry out a little. Oh well, he's used to hunting wet. At least the temps won't be freezing like last year.

my opinion here, but all this rain is only going to make stalking them easier.  I love stalking in the rain.  Absolutely love it.  They'll be up moving around and we will have as good of an advantage as possible!

Kip and I left after the Saturday morning hunt. As of then 3 arrows were released 1 connected, but no meat was brought back to camp. Marty, Todd, and I all had shot opportunities. Darren, and Randy had some close calls. I'll let them tell their stories and I'm anxious to hear what happened Saturday night and Sunday.

I can safely say that the brotherhood and fellowship I experienced was unlike any other hunting camp I've been in. All of these guys were top-notch and extremely welcoming of the new guy although they really warmed up after they ate my shrimp etouffe. Even though Randy kept calling me Jonathan instead of Jacob I have to say that this was the most fun I've had in a long time.

So here is my story:

I arrived Thursday night and ate a bowl of Kip's Hen, Sausage, and Tasso Gumbo and realized that this hunt is just as much about the food as it is the pursuit of wild critters.

Friday the game plan was to find the hogs. The crew headed out to the southern part of the WMA and we split into pairs and headed out in search of hog sign. Daniel and I took the southern wing of the search and worked our way through a block of 10-15 year old row planted red oaks. The trees were producing but pig sign was scarce. We did jump through 2 different deer bedding areas and saw 6 does. Next we went a few miles north to where one of Daniel's friends had seen some hogs the previous week. This area looked more promising. We started seeing some ground rooted up. Daniel and I also had a close encounter with an Alligator Snapping Turtle.

After some of Kip's reheated gumbo which is even better the next day we all headed out again into the swamps. Daniel and I stuck together and went check out another spot. About 3/4 mile into this block of timber I spotted movement straight in front of us. I thought we were busted because he made a bee-line straight away from us, but the wind was right and he must not have been spooked that bad because he ran about 60-70 yards and went about his business. That is when things got interesting.
Title: Re: Boeuf WMA Hog Hunt #2. ( updates )
Post by: jbpharmd on January 22, 2017, 04:47:00 PM
I started creeping towards him and Daniel followed close so that we would only make one silhouette. When we got about 30 yards from where he disappeared Daniel made a wide arc to the right and I stayed put with an arrow nocked hoping that we could flank him and maybe one of us could get a shot. I could see Daniel's orange through the trees as he worked his way around. Once Daniel got directly in front of me he started back my way to close the distance and try and force a shot. As soon as Daniel headed back my way I caught movement slightly off to my left at about 20yds and I put some tension on my longbow's string. I could tell that Daniel couldn't see him as he kept coming my way slowly. Then he made his mistake: he took two more steps and I had a perfect broadside shot at about 18 yards.

I don't remember drawing my bow at all. I just picked a spot and the next thing I know my arrow is on its way. The shot felt good but my heart dropped when I saw it collide with his back hip! 540 grains of arrow collided with him and he was momentarily stunned. I got another arrow on the string as quickly as I could as he started to limp away from me. It was clear that his back leg was broken. I felt my body start to involuntarily shake from the adrenaline as I tried to get a clear shot for my second arrow. Unfortunately this was a clean miss. As I nocked my third arrow he was getting farther away and I was starting to get that sinking feeling in my stomach. I didn't think I would get another shot so I tried to slow my breathing, concentrate on a spot and I let the string slip off my glove. It was a grazing shot, 2 inches up and I would have nailed him! Another few seconds later he was gone and I was left shaking with that terrible feeling of having botched an opportunity.

I just now got my pictures downloaded or uploaded or whatever. Jacob's etouffee was more than worth the drive and price of admission on this hunt. Of course Kip's gumbo, Randy's(Kristie's) breakfast burritos and Marty's caribou summer sausage and hunter's sticks made for solid eating all the way around. I had to leave Saturday, but Todd was supposed to make a jambalaya. I'm sure it was also incredible and it hurts that I missed out on the last leg of the Cajun Triple Crown of Cuisine.

Jacob nailed the camp vibe. Everyone gets along so well and he fit in perfectly. Daniel's hospitality makes it easy to feel welcomed and be relaxed. We all had a blast competing in a nighttime shooting contest. Daniel shot a time-lapse video and said he is going to try to post it. We laughed a lot!

I could only hunt Friday but managed to see a couple different groups of hogs during the afternoon. The first group was large. I don't know the exact number and I only got within about 80 yds before all but a few blew outta there. I was downwind of them, so I'm guessing that one happened to see me as I was trying to close the distance. I heard a barking type of grunt then a stampede ensued and saw lots of movement through the brush. The few that remained seemed unconcerned. One of those was a large sow. After raising hogs in my youth, I know what a market weight hog looks like. She was at or just past that size. What was really exciting is that these were the first hogs in maybe 8-10 bow hunts where I've actually seen any.

I only saw 3 in the second group, but managed to get to about 40 yds from the closest one before the wind got me. They all took off, but I almost had a chance!

I was very fortunate to be able to spend a little time with each guy individually. There is no doubt that hunting is important in different ways to everyone in attendance. But what was more impressive, is that everyone had a sincere desire for others to have a great time and some measure of success. I think Todd was more excited for me seeing my first hogs while bow hunting than I was. And I can tell you.....I was pretty excited!

As always, the end of these things come too soon. Can't wait for the next one!

My Friday morning hunt was uneventful as I covered a lot of ground and saw NO hog sign. I did however sneak up on this duck. I didn't take a shot though, since I did not have the proper stamps.

Like I said there was NO hog sign at our first stop, so Daniel, Jacob, Kip and Todd headed out for another spot. Randy, Marty and myself were quite a ways further back, so it took us longer to walk out. I beat them back to the parking area and saw my truck was in the sun. It was hot. I was sweating. Thought I'd move my truck past Randy's and into some shade, sit on the tailgate and drink lots of water. Didn't quite make it past Randy's truck and mine slid off into the shallow, muddy ditch and wasn't going anywhere. Thankfully, Randy still had the strap from getting stuck in his yard with him and he easily pulled me out.

After meeting back at camp and partaking of caribou sausage and gumbo, we headed back out to a new area. I immediately saw some fresh rooting but then saw a bunch of orange up ahead of me. As I got closer I could see a lot of marker flags and then a fenced-off enclosure. Each flag grouping was a white marker flag surrounded by 4 orange flags. There were two of these groupings in the enclosure and probably six or seven more scattered about the general area. Curious.

The rooting in this area was unlike anything I had personally seen before. This is just a small sampling and the picture doesn't do it justice. There was one spot that was approximately 20 x 60 yds that looked as if it had been churned up with a garden tiller.

So feeling guilty for hurting an animal and not being able to retrieve it Daniel and I left the squirrel to his own devices hoping that his leg was not to badly broken by the blunt arrow and he would survive. We continued on until the darkness and mosquitoes proved too much and we headed toward the road. While walking back to the truck we jumped a large boar about 200+ pounds at 50 yds and he slowly plodded through the swamp away from us seemingly unafraid.

When we got back to the camp it was time for me to prove my worth with my shrimp etoufee and it seemed like a hit since pretty much everyone came back for seconds (and i think Marty might have gone for fifths). We had a coon-shoot that night with flashlights each firing one arrow with the winner getting the call the next shot.

The next morning we all had another helping of Randy's excellent breakfast burritos and took to the swamps. I had a quiet morning but I did see a pair of raccoons, a gray fox, and an Owl eating a mouse. After that we headed to the camp for Marty's smoked salmon which was some of the best fish I've ever had (and I live in south Louisiana). Then Marty grilled us up some Caribou bratwurst while we munched on his Caribou summer sausage and hunter sticks!

As Kip and I caught the ferry across the river to head home after lunch I said a prayer to thank The Lord for a truly incredible time with some awesome men. I am so thankful that I was able to share a camp and some fine hunting experiences with these guys. I consider myself truly blessed to have been part of their group and I can't wait for next year!!!

Just a taste of the cool stuff you see in the swamps. I didn't take as many pictures this year because I only had the one day to hunt. Looking forward to hearing all the final recaps.

Thank you Daniel for hosting us again. And thanks to all the guys for making it another great camp and hunt!

Just got back and unpacked everything. As usual I did not want to leave. I had been looking forward to getting together with everyone again on this hunt and I was not disappointed. I think a great time was had by all again! Thanks to Daniel for hosting the hunt, and everyone else's contributions to a really great time.    :scared:

I saw a bunch of deer this year and it has become part of the discussion that we might end up having to throw in some deer hunting in the future. It's kind of interesting because the hog hunting becomes a neat deer scouting event even though your not looking for deer. I saw over 15 deer easy this trip along with coons, owls, hawks, alligators and too many ducks to count.

We had some really bad weather but it hit us mostly at night so we were able to get some good hunting time. If these storms would have hit us during the day there's no way we could have hunted in it.

The coon shoot was a blast and like always I learn a bunch from the guys that attend. I can't wait till next year!!   :wavey:

I am just now getting everything uploaded to photo bucket.  I always enjoy this hunt.  Not so much because of the hunting, but because of the fun at camp.  The high light of my trip was watching Jacob (also known as Johnathon) smoke that squirrel!!  He was so excited, as  I was also excited for him!  You would have swore he had just shot a 200" buck.  Traditional archery really helps you enjoy the small things.  For him to shoot that squirrel with a compound wouldn't have been nearly as fun!

Something worth noting is that Darren drove around 6 hours for 1 day of hunting.  It didn't have much to do with the hunting.  The camp is what's so fun to me.  As previously stated, we had a coon shoot and it was a blast!  7 guys all shooting bows at an illuminated target at night was fun!  We did all different types of shots.  Todd loved to try to make it as awkward as possible. lol.  I was just waiting for him to say, "lets see who can shoot between the legs, behind the back, and around that tree all at the same time".  haha.

Here is the time lapse video.  Crazy that this video covers about 40 mins worth of shooting in 21 seconds!  We ended up shooting for well over an hour!

Last year I learned some valuable lessons on this hog hunt.  One of the soon to be "requirements"(tongue in cheek) is you must be a good cook to come!  We don't care how good you hog hunt, we care about the FOOD!!!

Each year the food is beyond words.  The first night I show up, Kip is working on his gumbo! Kip isn't much to look at, but he sure can cook!

  (http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o795/wadebinkley/2017%20Tradgang%20Hog%20Hunt/BAC87479-E09C-4B32-96A1-45700CA2BCDE_zpsqeha2jjc.jpg) (http://s1343.photobucket.com/user/wadebinkley/media/2017%20Tradgang%20Hog%20Hunt/BAC87479-E09C-4B32-96A1-45700CA2BCDE_zpsqeha2jjc.jpg.html)

Here are the contents of the hen and sausage gumbo!  Boy, it was good!

One things i've really noticed this year is that hte pig sign just isn't there like it has been in years past.  Like not even a fraction of a percentage of what it usually is.  Usually the whole woods are cut up like the picture Darren posted.  But, after seeing his pictures of the hog traps, I can see why they're gone.  Hogs are fun to chase, but not very good for a deer herd.  This weekend I saw more deer than i've see in the last 4 years hunting there!

Jacob and I checking out Rock Lake.  The only sign we had saw was the sign of a big stinky boar about 5'8" and 200+ pounds that goes by the name of Randy.  We walked up on where they had already walked before we headed back to the truck to go check a new area.

I feel like there was a bad joke going on here.  A lot of people use flagging.  I think a few guys tried to help one guy find his way to his spot.

How many pieces of flagging can you spot in this pic?

These were both taken in the same place, just facing different directions.

As previously stated, Marty is an INVALUABLE part of camp.  This year he brought smoked fish, caribou brats, hunter sticks, summer sausage, etc.  His contributions have earned him a lifetime invite. :)

Seriously though, it is a lot of fun to be around a bunch of guys for a weekend with our tradbows!  I know I needed a weekend like this, even if the pig sightings weren't numerous, the fun was immeasurable!

I am already looking forward to next year!

Well I'm late getting in my part as well, but here goes. The first day Marty and I hunted by ourselves in the rain since we was early. It was pretty uneventful till we came out on the road about a mile from the camp and lo and behold here came Kip down the road. He picked us up and took us back to camp. Good timing Kip!!! The second day we all split up and Marty and Darren and I headed straight toward Rock lake. When we reached the lake we split up and made plans to meet on the back side of the lake. Marty and I went to the right and Darren went to the left. Right after we split up Marty and I ran into a drainage that was flooded from the rains we started trying to find a way around it. We hadn't gone far when we found a place that looked cross able. We were about to cross when all of a sudden we jumped a hog on the other side. I wasn't sure if it was about to cross our way or was just working the edge of the water. I thought about trying to follow it but it ran right back into a huge flooded area and kept going as far as we could hear it. I knew it was point less. We kept working our way along and ran into another drainage that looked to be impassable but we finally found a beaver dam and decided to cross knowing that we would most likely have to find a way back from the other side instead of going back the way we came.      (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/27B710BD-DC70-47AB-A0F4-550FAB210E2C_zpseker19eu.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/27B710BD-DC70-47AB-A0F4-550FAB210E2C_zpseker19eu.jpg.html)  And here's Marty crossing.     (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/0916F3B7-ED03-4845-91DF-3E1029BE8858_zpso1xiswtb.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/0916F3B7-ED03-4845-91DF-3E1029BE8858_zpso1xiswtb.jpg.html)

We worked our way through tall reeds and more floodwaters till we finally came to a trial on the perimeter of the wma and realized we were quite aways from the truck. What felt like several miles later we come out onto the trail about 100 yrds from the truck. There we found Darren sitting in the shade and reading a book. It was then I realized he was stuck. I couldn't just leave him there. Lol   (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/F2A43F72-79DA-4A49-9284-0525DEFEE0C9_zps9gg0yqa2.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/F2A43F72-79DA-4A49-9284-0525DEFEE0C9_zps9gg0yqa2.jpg.html)

That evening we all headed to another area and split up again. I took Darren and Marty on my 4wheeler and didn't make it far till we hit water. Darren droped off there and decided to work his way along the waters edge. I took Marty back up the Rd aways and he worked a big circle through the section above the road. I went and looked at another area but wasn't comfortable leaving my wheeler along the county road so I came back to where I droped off Marty. There was a cutover area that a guy could see pretty good. So I just walked out about 100 yrds and sat down hoping a deer or something would come along before dark.   (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/DC8DDF4E-C8D0-4DDC-9C2E-AC86A4011AC3_zpstywlof3c.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/DC8DDF4E-C8D0-4DDC-9C2E-AC86A4011AC3_zpstywlof3c.jpg.html)  It was a beautiful afternoon and I had a good seat on a dead fall with a big limb behind me. So I did what any self respecting hunter would do! I leaned back and gazed at the sky and enjoyed the afternoon.    (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/3D2A8FD1-270C-4286-866E-4461FA34E444_zps2dkn6tnq.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/3D2A8FD1-270C-4286-866E-4461FA34E444_zps2dkn6tnq.jpg.html)  I may or may not have fell asleep there for a little while.    :dunno:

The next morning Daniel and I worked a section above where we had hunted the day before. He took the left side inad I took the right. It had rained agin the night before and stalking conditions were perfect. I was slipping along quietly when I caught a little ray of sunshine!      (http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k359/crittergetter76/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/FCF9741E-0F4B-4363-AEB1-A1FEDF3184AD_zpsc7kntzb0.jpg) (http://s324.photobucket.com/user/crittergetter76/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/FCF9741E-0F4B-4363-AEB1-A1FEDF3184AD_zpsc7kntzb0.jpg.html)
Somewhere along there I took 2 shots at squirrels and there were perfect shots at around 20 yrds but the intended targets were no longer there when the arrow arrived!  I kept slipping along and was admiring a good rub when the wind swirled and all of a sudden a boar that was every bit of 250+ jumped out of his bed less than 20 yrds from me. Where he was bedded it was thick and was holding about 2" of water. I couldn't have seen him if I had looked straight at him. I had no idea he was there and he had no idea I was there till the wind swirled. If the wind hadn't swirled neither of us would have known the other existed.

Kind of late posting but I am just getting settled back in at work. It was a great trip. Great food and great company. I feel privileged to have been able to share a camp with these guys.
The first day Randy and I looked around close to the camp but did not see any sign in any of the places we had seen pigs last year. The second day in the morning we tried a new area and Randy and I were trying to find our way across some water when we jumped a pig on the other side of it we did not get a look at it but heard plowing through the water. That evening we went to a different area and after Randy dropped me off I made a circle and when ended up back on the road it I had enough day light to make another circle. So I went back in and went to the edge of the water and started working my way along it back to the road. I seen something looked out of place and it was a pig laying down right after I saw him he started to stand and was looking away from me. He then turned broadside and presented me with a shot. I was thinking aim low you do not want to hit them high and sure enough I aimed low and shot right under his belly.   :banghead:  That was all for that day.
The next morning Jacob and I went to the upper road and worked the entire section staying close to the water. About half way through I seen a sow and about 6 40 lb pigs with a boar following. They working their way down along the waters edge. They got about a 100 yards ahead of me and I could hear what turned out to be three boars fighting over the sow. I was starting to stalk them when they started coming back toward me. 2 of the boars chased the sow to with in 20 yards of me they were milling around pushing each other around then one boar started to mount the sow and I thought I was going to get a shot at him but she would not stay still long enough for me to get drawn. eventually they took off with giving me a shot opportunity.
That evening Randy and I went back and worked that section of woods again. In about the same area where I had seen the pig in the morning I came across a sounder of about 15 to 20 pigs spread out through the wood. I had some of them working back towards me and I thought I might get another shot opportunity but there was one pig that circled around and caught my wind and they all moved off with out giving me a shot.
We went back the next morning and worked it again and never seen any pigs.

Joe,

the latest it could happen would be the last weekend in january.  I don't know how the Lord does it, but it would appear that he plans rain every 3rd weekend in January.

Obviously, its all up to chance, but seems like the chances are pretty good of it raining next January as well! lol.

I can't wait to do it again, fellas!!!
