I just read on PA that Dean Torges passed away on Nov. 4. If this is the case it is another sad day for traditional and wood bow archery, and the bow hunting world.
Pat,
That is what I heard yesterday. I know he had been fighting cancer the past year.
Loved his writings, thoughts for his family and friends.
Sad news, I very much enjoyed his writings.
His part in masters of the barebow was one of my favorite.
Dean contributed much to traditional archery and will be sorely missed.
Godspeed Dean! R.I.P.
God bless,Mudd

God bless.
May he rest in peace.
Sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
Thanks,
My respect and heart go out to his family and his Spirit. Never met him, but I have had a true appreciation for his writing, his philosophy and values, and his skills and vision.
I was just rereading a copy of his book Hunting The Osage Bow last night. I always liked his writings. Prayers go out to his family.
I knew him and enjoyed two of his bows, even got a buck with my first. I was truly blessed to have known him. He loved his Mary and girls. What a loss, however I think Osage shavings are already being made above!
Frankie, what a Gem huh? He was a great man, wonderful memories with Dean at the campfire at ETAR.
We are all deeply saddened by Dean's Passing.
I loved his squirrel hunting stories. I have a couple of those Torges tree seats too. He will be missed but always remembered. Prayers for the family.
Oh wow.....so sad. Dean was one of the good ones.
Prayers up for family and friends!

Sad news. RIP Dean
Rest in Peace Dean. Thank you for all you did for our family and others. Your spirit will live on.
To those I leave behind when I go:
Death is nothing at all. It does not really count. I have merely slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains as it was. I am me, you are you, and the life we lived together is untouched and unchanged. Whatever we were to each other we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way you always did. Put no difference in your tone. Wear no forced air of sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me—a little.
Let my name be the household word it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it has ever meant, the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is death but an unavoidable incident? Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you—very near—just around he corner.
All is well.
All my love,
Dean

AN ARROW SONG
A song from green Floridian vales I heard,
Soft as the sea-moan when the waves are slow;
Sweeter than melody of brook or bird,
Keener than any winds that breathe or blow;
A magic music out of memory stirred,
A strain that charms my heart to overflow
With such vast yearning that my eyes are blurred.
Oh, song of dreams, that I no more shall know!
Bewildering carol without spoken word!
Faint as a stream's voice murmuring under snow,
Sad as a love forevermore deferred,
Song of the arrow from the Master's bow,
Sung in Floridian vales long, long ago.

Sorry to hear of this. I really enjoyed his writings, he had a way with words that few people do. By the way, his lentil soup recipe is incredible.
Very sad news, R.I.P. Dean. You will never be replaced. We are losing the greatest generation of traditional archers.
A very talented man that shared his thoughts and ideas freely. Thank you Dean.
I always joked that I knew him before he was "famous". My son and I sat around our fire at the ETAR watching him and Gordy Mikins try to set their camp up in the dark. He never did let his little bit of fame change him, great guy.
A supremely gifted man, a true artisan with his hands and with his words. An individual who epitomized what traditional archery is supposed to be, from the exquisitely crafted selfbows to the very philosophy by which he practiced his crafts. Thoughtfulness, fun with family and friends, minimizing his contributions without fanfare or self-embellishment, taking unrelenting joy in his pursuit of the simpler aspects of archery and life in general. Dean was a rare icon in a world of traditional archery than many had left behind, and perhaps never fully appreciated. May his life, legacy and dedication be long-remembered.
Dean and I had been texting quite a bit over the last few months. He never responded to my last text.
Dean was archetypal for me.He was intelligent, skilful, educated, literate and articulate. In other words he was a rare man. I will miss him dearly.
Sad news indeed. Always enjoyed his articles and have fashioned a few Torges seats myself over the years.
Prayers for his family and God speed Mr. Torges.
