Title: two bucks in two minutes
Post by: Possumjon on November 05, 2016, 10:27:00 PM
Walked out today, longbow in hand. There's nothing like hunting on the ground on public land during the rut. Got to my spot a little late and busted two deer on my walk in. Scrape city here!

about 9:30 I hear something and next thing I know a spike is coming in. I get ready, I draw when his heads behind a tree . He's 15 yards out, I release, the shot looks good,BAM he ducks my arrow. He runs off about 10 yards then starts coming back!

I knock another arrow hoping he clears my lane. I then see a fork horn coming in from the same trail. He's moving faster, I swing with him and release, half way there my arrow hits a branch and launches 3 feet in front of him. I was still shaking pretty good from the spike and should have waited till he was completely clear of the brush. Both deer take off and I find both arrows clean as a whistle. Ahh I love bow hunting , just wish I'd connect!

I like using an attractant or bait to put them in the perfect spot for a shot

Well today was pretty eventful also. Got into my stand to start a beautiful morning. Had a flock of 20 turkeys or so come in and feed around me. The first time in 5 years I haven't got a fall turkey license of course! Lots of birds out today, I was joined by chickadees, cardinals and woodpeckers all morning.

At about 11 I decided to take off. On my walk back I broke my rule of 'stalking' out and busted two deer. Then on the trail to the car I got lost in thought about knives of course and was startled by a spike in the middle of the road

He saw me but couldn't figure out what I was. He curiously circled me while I was perched on one foot. He started feeding again. I was able to get an arrow nocked while he was behind a tree.

Moments later as I  tried to shift to take a shot and he was off! Good times lol

It is exciting, but it can be tough balancing the happiness you get from that adrenaline rush, and the clear minded calmness that allows you to pick and control your shot well.
