I have some true flight feathers that are already cut to 4" shield and I would like to combine two of the colors.
does anyone do this? Know how to do this?
Is this even possible?
-
I've been thinking about doing this as well. I have a ton of white 4" shields and want to slice them with florescent pink. I'd like to know if my idea is doable or not.

Can be done, but it's a pain the rear. Attempt it if you want, but it's so much easier to use full height and chop your own.
-
I've seen your magnificent work, Mike. Are you saying it's easier to do the splicing BEFORE on full length, then chop to your preferred size?
-
Doc,
I do them full length & height, then chop or burn them (I prefer to burn). There are several methods one can use, stripping the quill produces the best results for me.

The "How-to" I did here, is on page 2, I believe...

most of the splicing I have done with feathers that are already pre cut to shape need some extra loving with a burner or cut with scissors . most of what I have done has been taken the precut feather and added a single slice of another color using a full length feather . Doing it this way you need that splice to be trimmed using a feather burner works the best but scissors will do. One of the biggest tricks to this is making sure that the feathers match up having them all go in the same direction is key. Some feathers Layl flatter some have a sharper angle it's a lot easier to accomplish this feather splice using full length.
If anybody has any questions on the splicing I'm more than happy to help and I also have had people send me there shafts and feathes to use in a splicing combination of the desire
I hope I was if some help

I have done it. usually cut about 3/8" off the back of the feather. Then add the peice you want spliced from another feather of the same color to the back with the same sheild cut. place in clamp
