I know its good for all the critters, but there are almost too many acorns this year, here in Southern Maryland. Theyre everywhere in my hunting area, so I cant choose a bearing tree to hunt near, as there are too many to choose from. This applies to squirrels as well as deer. They can spread out and find plenty of food, and I just have to hope I pick the right spot, on the right trail. Oh well, I guess.
I've had good luck near doe bedding areas on these years. 2 years ago we had a bumper crop of acorns and I seen numerous bucks cruising in and out of these doe hot spots. I hunted it the following year with out all the acorns and it wasn't near as productive. This year we have another bumper crop, so that's my plan. I will be back near that doe bedding area.
We have a very poor crop here where I am
heavy here as well as beech nuts.
I havent found a bedding area, but I have some heavily used trails that I will hunt. Hopefully something turns up for me.
Acorns are hit or miss here in my area of Michigan. We had a very hot summer .
Double post. Good luck guys
There are no oaks in the NE corner of VT which is why the winters can be tough on deer and densities are low. Beechnuts can be hit or miss. It makes for spectacular foliage though as the other hardwoods are not diluted by less colorful oaks but great views don't help fill the freezer.
They are thin at my place this year.
There are tons of acorns in the western end of Maryland(Garrett County), very hard to pattern the deer when they have food everywhere in the woods. Still have many uncut corn fields as well
Rodne
At my place there are no white oak acorns this year. Some black and red oaks are bearing ok. 30 miles from me, a buddy has woods loaded with white oak acorns.
On Long Island most years have a lot of acorns. I try to hunt funnels and heavy trails close to bedding areas.
Ha! I was target shooting my broad heads and actually slipped and fell in the yard. There were so many acorns it was like walking on ball bearings.
For those of yall who have little or no acorns this year I will extend a offer. Please come and take as many as you would like as a matter of fact I installed a new acorn collection system on my house this year called gutters. All we have to do it hold empty corn sacks on the down spouts and bingo takes about 20min or so to fill one. If you'd like we can situate lawn chairs and enjoy adult beverages during the process..
Yeah, pretty heavy on my place too.
It varies greatly here in Michigan. In the lower part where I live, the acorn crop is quite heavy. I spent 5 days farther north at Grayling and it was the opposite - lots of oaks, but the acorn crop was very spotty. Where we did find acorns there was a lot of deer sign.
Around my area SE MN there isn't acorns at all.
Heavy up in Frederick county also.
I collect nuts each fall (and lots of other native seeds), for habitat work stuff. I am having to check many many Oaks to just find a few acorns. Not deer food, but Walnuts around here are absolutely loaded....I don't even walk under them because they are dropping constantly.
