Me and the Mrs want to move out west... We have narrowed it down and are considering Montana but what about wyoming..? What we are looking for is few people, good hunting etc.. Both have that.. How does the Elk hunting compare? Over the counter oppurtunities? License fees? Anyone familiar with Cody? Any info appreciated... God bless, Kevin
Eastern Wyoming can be downright misery in the winter. The wind never quits and it gets COLD! Montana has pretty liberal game laws---not sure about Wyoming. Where did you have in mind in Montana?
Around Billings. I was looking around Cody in wyoming...
If you choose Montana, better make it quick before the Wolf's eat all the game. In an area that I've hunted for years, this season no Elk but plenty of wolf's, in a two mile section of abandon road 14 piles of wolf ****.

Montana has more favorable bow seasons.
my father went to cody wyoming about 12 years ago to go muel deer and elk hunting (i was only 6 so i didnt get to go) and i have seen beautiful pictures of the mountains out there. But when he was out there the warmest it got for 12 days was negative 8 but granted that was up in the mountains
Teddy said the 50 miles just east of JellyStone was the most beautiful 50 miles on earth... That pretty well takes you to Cody.. Lot of Natural gas and oil going on there, kind of mucking things up, but still great..
Buffalo Bill Museum and Museum of the Fur Trade I believe are both in Cody.. If I was 30 years younger, or ten years older, I would join you.
Some bow only antelope areas just east.. Can't be all bad.

We do have the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, wife works there. No fur trade museum.
Kevin, I gave up Kalifornia 30 years ago and moved to Casper, Wyoming. This is not a tourist town like Cody is but, there is a ton of jobs, and there is hunting and fishing in all directions. If income is not a priority, then there might be better choices. But...We have things most people need. An airport, shopping, (we no longer have to drive to Denver to shop). Bowyers, arrowsmiths, outfitters, Driftboat rentals, Blue ribbon trout streams, the usual big game hunting, small game and birds. We also don't have state income tax! Being in the middle of the state you can reach the top or bottom of the state in three hours or east to west in about four. I hope this gives you some more information to chew on. Prarrie Dog
Right now in Wyo there are a ton of jobs in the patch.. But where in Wyo depends on what type of thing you are into.. Around here there is a bijillion acres of BLM land.. Cody isn't so open, unless you head out to the Nat Forest.. Montana is a pretty cool place as well.. And do not over look Idaho.
Idaho Falls Idaho is one of the premier destinations for sportsmen to live. Hunting and fishing all within a few minutes drive. Jobs, too!
That Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody is awesome. I was there as a teenager 20 years ago..got to get back!
I've not been to Montana...yet. Wyoming is awesome. Either one is a great choice. Wish I could be out there too.
If I could swing it...I'd live in Wyoming. Not to mention the wolf problem that Bob spoke of....but Montana is (forgive me, I was born and raised here) completely ECONOMICALLY, POLITICALLY, and for the most part SOCIALLY RETARDED. The only people these days who are really enjoying it are those who bring boatloads of money with them. For the average working stiff, or even above average wage earner (other places)...it's a tight squeeze. In a large sense, it no longer belongs to the native Montanans, either. I really have a love/hate relationship with this place from whence I came these days....LOL.
Of course, there are blessings as well. The public land, the mountains, the streams and lakes. But....Wyoming has that AND an ecomony that is at least two levels more advanced than medieval bartering systems.
These guys make a great point about Idaho as well...tough to beat it....they have all the geographical and biological diversity of the other two, plus some.

Oh....license fees in Montana are not too bad compared to other states...dunno bout Wyoming or Idaho fees well enough to speak to them.
