Shot this 7 point buck yesterday evening with my Fedora longbow. We've had a bumper crop of acorns this year plus Hurricane Matthew came through last weekend and so there are acorns everywhere.
I went out Sunday and did a little scouting. I've always seen a flurry of pre-rut activity during this week so was hoping to find some good buck sign. I knew where there were a couple of large oak trees in an area that doesn't have very many oaks and had a feeling the deer would be hitting these good. Sure enough I found signs of feeding activity, multiple rubs and a good licking branch. I selected a tree, did a little limb trimming and planned to hunt it the next afternoon.
Got in the woods around 4 p.m. and squirrels were already feeding. At 6 p.m. the buck appeared and came within 10 yards but I couldn't quite get the shot I wanted. I thought he was going to walk off but then he came back closer to me feeding and looking - he finally stopped at around 18 yards and I put a perfect shot on him.
After giving him a few minutes I went looking for blood - I didn't see anything obvious at the site of the shot so eased down through the woods looking as I went. When I got to the last spot I had seen him running I looked ahead and there he was - he had run about 50-60 yards and was down.
The 200 grain VPA 3 blade had gone in tight behind his left shoulder and come out low behind the right shoulder. I have been shooting a lighter bow this year - around 42 lbs at my draw length - and found my accuracy had increased significantly and had been wondering how it would perform on game…No more concerns from me on that issue lol…

Congrats. I'm waiting on the bucks to start cruising here. So far they are still only moving at night. Too many acorns available in or very near their sanctuaries.

Where at in NC? Seen pictures of the coast yesterday, what a mess. Absolute devastation.
I wonder if the coastal deer and hogs will be affected.

Good Job Wally. DB
Hey Tim. All good here in new bern. Plenty of water in the woods and acorns. Right up the road they are dealing with major flooding to rival that of Floyd in 1999. expecting 5' of water in Neuse Sport shop in Kinston by Saturday afternoon.
-
Thanks everyone!
Tim - I'm in Franklin county. A few roads washed out but otherwise ok. Prolly blew every acorn off the oaks in one day though lol….
Will be headed to coast this weekend and checking things out…
-
Forgot to add congratulations to Don Batton also - he got a nice buck with his recurve the other day..
Sorry to hear about the Sport Shop - its an icon for anyone going east on why 70….
-
Looks like you planned well and executed it to perfection Wally. Congratulations! That's a nice NC buck. :archer2:

Great story and congrats...
-
good lucking buck. i so excited for Saturday, i can't stand it.
-
did the arrow pass through?
I have read of two posts recently that were with "light" bow and the other one had a LESS THAN 400 grain arrow zip right through a deer. tough to argue with results.
-
Congrats!

Good buck. Congratulations!
-
Nice buck and story.
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone….
Daniel - I had an exit wound but the arrow stayed in the deer - but not for long as it snapped off as soon as he took a few jumps….Pretty much the same as what I've experienced with my 50 - 55 lb. bows on similar hits over the years(around 40 deer with trad)...
Arrow weight is a little less than 500 grains….
-
Very Nice! Congrats!
-
Great looking buck Wally  CONGRATS!

That is a very nice looking 7 point. You need to add this to the 40 lbs bow kill thread !
