Title: Short billed hats
Post by: JakeD on October 07, 2016, 10:25:00 PM
Who has a recommendation for a place to find a good short billed hat? My regular baseball style hats just don't work for me shooting my recurve and I get tired of turning it backwards to shoot.

I have couple I bought over the years, but before I bought them I made my own.

Pretty easy to do. I cut the brim of a Columbia ball cap to the length I wanted.
Then using Barge cement, glue a strip of cloth over the edge to seal it.

Traditional Bowhunter Magazine website has some really nice short brim hats. I bought one a while back. It has been my favorite out of the short brim that I have tried.

I bought one a couple years ago from The Footed Shaft. Think it was called the "Bowhunters Lid". It has the short brim that has the wire in it so you can bend it where you want it. For cold weather I have a Stormy Kromer that has a fairly short brim. I usually wear a "Fred Bear" hat I bought from 3Rivers quite awhile ago. The soft brim folds out of the way nicely.

My favorite - the Wensel's lid.  But I wear mine bill forward.  ;-)

yep, I like the short bill wire brim hats for hunting.  I got mine from big jim, looks about the same as stumpkillers though.

If I know i will have a shot I might smash the right side up. even then, its easy enough to draw through if needed.

baseball caps never worked for me with a bow. this hat style
saves me a lot of frustration.

Many years ago I had found a shop that sewed custom welding hats. I like them because I could flip the bill up.  https://www.google.com/search?q=camo+welding+cap&safe=off&espv=2&biw=1677&bih=928&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiBkvWPuMvPAhWKcj4KHbPxAioQ_AUIBygC#imgrc=_

My son who bought Archery Past has short billed hats that he does very well with at shoots.  He is not a sponsor as of yet, he is still getting things set up.  He may have them on his e- bay store.  Riley bought Archery Past from Dave Doran and they are from Oregon, hope that helps.

Several good spots for lightweight caps mentioned, I will second the 2 tracks coup cap for colder weather. Although we don't get much of it here.

I have been scoping out Tilley hats. Pricy, but they are fine. Buddy of mine has one.

I have an original Jones cap. Love the short brim and classic style. It was my father's. It's that duck camo with a yellowish background. Think I'm gonna dye it to darken it to a little more brown color

get scissors and cut the bill on your hats back as far as you need.

but the traditional hats mentioned above are nice too cause that have wire in the bill to shape the visor any way you want

I love making things work from what i have, I tried that exact same thing, and thought I was going to have a real winner.... Turned out pretty meh...

the flexible wire brim hat is well worth the 10 usd  in my opinion.

YEP!!!

We have sold these MANY times.  They are almost GONE and there will be no more till someone makes them again. Bendable wire brim and all.

So few I'm not sure I want to sell anymore.  Too bad...one of those things that are so good and stop being made!!!

Any suggestion for my massive dome? I wear a size 8 in fitted hats. Those one size fits all hats never work.
