Title: OKLAHOMA 2016 Success/Fail Thread
Post by: Michael Arnette on October 03, 2016, 09:41:00 AM
I'll start the "organized thread" thread for banter and photos from Oklahoma's 2016 season. Post away and good luck this year to my fellow Okie's. BTW if you are out of state and are looking for an affordable/quality state to hunt give Oklahoma a good hard look.

Shot this doe last night at around 7pm from about 20ish yards using TallTines recurve @62# and grizzly broadheads, 570gr GT arrow

Congrats Michael, I did not see a deer during my Sit Saturday morning, the mosquitos were horrible. I did see 2 bucks Sunday morning, but they were 100 yards away in an open field. Saw deer both mornings approaching the farm, but none in range yet. Beautiful weather to start the season however.

Congrats on the doe....you are having a good season.  I am a long time Okie who happens to live in Fort Worth.  I hunt in Southern Oklahoma on the  Red River.  No deer this weekend but I did get several hogs.   I only took one pic and it is not the best:

I was using my Rick Welch Dakota Recurve 57#@29 and  Axis arrows with German Kenetic 1.5 inch broadheads

I will be following this thread closely.

Thanks for getting it started.

That's an awesome doe!

Just posted this on my own thread earlier, but thanks for starting this one. This coyote is my first bow kill. I shot it with a Shrew Classic Hunter 58# at 28" with grizzly single bevels on gold tip blems.

I spent opening weekend in SW OK.  This was mostly a scouting trip for me.  Saw lots of sign and glassed up a couple of does including a mule deer doe.

I knew there was going to be some elevation change based on staring at google earth for hours this off season, but I was totally unprepared.  There was a tall mesa/ridgeline that I was trying to get up before light, but had to cross a creek on the way there.  Come to find out, there is a 10' mud bank on the opposite side of the creek.  It took me a while to find a place to cross and I didn't get up top till about 9am.  Think I missed a lot of deer movement getting up there so late on an early season day.

To top it off, every brush that I thought was going to be 3'-4' tall was 6'-10'.

In addition to glassing I put about 10 miles on the boots in a day and a half checking all the spots I marked as possible areas to sit.  Sat a promising looking funnel that night, but didn't see anything.  Wind was perfect, I'm guessing they're just using it after dark.

In sticking to the topic of this thread, I had both a success and a fail in Oklahoma yesterday.

The success was that I shot a doe -- will post pics tomorrow.

The fail was that i drove over a low water crossing yesterday morning on my place on the way to my stand.  When I came back to the crossing, the bayou had risen about 5 feet and I could not get back across!  The red river had risen that much in just a few hours due to some rain upstream more than 2 days before.  The bayou normally runs into the river but yesterday, the  bayou was running backwards because of the rising river.  I had to contact the landowner to the north so that I could cross his land and get home.  Lesson learned!

Here is the doe I got this weekend:

I was using one of my Rick Welch Dakota Pro Hunters - this one is 51# at 29". Shooting Abowyer Watipi single bevel 1.25" broadheads -- I am very impressed with the penetration and blood trail -- doe went 30 yards.

Congrats on that doe Paul, Nice Job! Your story reminded me of a hunt 15-20 years ago on the deep fork river. We would drive in and camp all weekend. One weekend it rained pretty good all weekend, We did not think much of it, but come Sunday evening when it was time to head home, the only road in was flooded pretty good. Had to stay an extra night and miss work the next day. The water did recede overnight and we were able to get out the next day.

Fellow Okie's, I hunted this morning with a long time high school friend and had one of the best hunts I have ever experienced in October. No doe sightings but the bucks were moving.
A couple highlights would include a massive bobcat and a equally massive 150 inch Whitetail at 25 yards but without a shooting lane and a very obscured shot. Normally the deer travel north to south at this stand  but for some reason this buck took a turn to the west just before traveling into my shooting lane and wandered out of our lives.
Still an amazing hunt.
I have always been one to snicker at rut predictions and say that it always happens the same time of year but this year I think it's going to be early...we shall see

Yes, I made the self bow. My family has a small "orchard" of Osage that my great grandfather planted for making fence posts. They kept them trimmed as they grew so there are some really good straight trees that make for excellent bow wood.

Looks like you boys to the East of me are having a fine fall so far.  I was not able to draw a single tag  in New Mexico this year.  I need to look into hunting Oklahoma in the future.  Is there a good amount of public land for us DYI types?
Title: Re: OKLAHOMA 2016 Success/Fail Thread
Post by: Michael Arnette on October 15, 2016, 02:22:00 AM
Jesse, there is some public but nothing like NM, Kansas is the place for that. Also don't count SE Colorado out either for whitetail, the tags aren't hard to draw and I have seen bruiser bucks every time I drive out for elk.
There are some good areas in SW Oklahoma such as Sandy Sanders WMA that are only open to bow hunting

I sat both mornings this past weekend and did not see a thing. Very windy (at least it kept the mosquitoes tamed) and too warm for mid October. Hoping things change soon, I have never had this bad of luck on my hunting spot, to not even see deer. Seven sits so far, and only seen deer one of them. Very discouraging.

I chose the wrong stand Saturday morning. This guy walked by the stand I didn't choose at 15 yards at about 8:00.  The rut must be getting close.

I did get this squirrel which I shot on the way out of the woods:

Overall, I thought the hunting was pretty tough this weekend.  Warm and windy.   I did not see a lot of deer from the stand.

Reporting that Saturday was an uneventful hunt and I did not see a deer. Sunday I moved to another stand on the other side of the property and finally saw an antlerless deer. Even got a shot at about 17 yards, and sadly have to report it was a rather pathetic shot at that! Shot over the deer by at least a foot. Glad to have seen a deer and hopefully activity will pick up.

Friday wasn't bad. I'm a great hunter but not a good killer apparently.

It was my first trip to our place near the Kansas border. I arrived to find my favorite stand now resided in a decidedly dead tree....kilt many a deer out of that tree  :( ...

So I moved the stand slightly south and hoped it still would work out.

Sure'nough, right at dark here came the does. Shot at a doe 20 yds behind me. Right under her. 3 minutes later. Doe 10 yds in front of me. chip shot. Pulled into right into her shoulder, forward and high. No blood, no arrow to be found. Hopefully it was less than lethal.

But ive got my bad shooting out of the way    :knothead:

MCAAP this week!!!

Didn't see one deer on stand at MCAAP this weekend. However my son and his friend encountered five bucks total, two of which looked to be P&Y class.
My son did have a fork horn come right up to him at the tree he was sitting next to and actually smelled his knee. Eye to eye, face to face. The buck had no clue what my son was and just backed away and left.
It made the weekend for sure!

I will be heading out next week, pics to follow .I have a bud of 75 years old that took a stud off of our lease with a muzzle loader last week.Probably in the 150's. He has a strategy that is , take a chair and put it near the last deer you saw last year. Works for him  :)

Someone shot a toad at MCAAP yesterday. Apparently he was chasing a doe, and in an area the white hats hadn't seen him in. I think less than 15 were checked in though. Not sure how many there were today.

Saw a decent buck myself, probably 150 yards away. Looked like a solid 10. He was headed the wrong direction and downwind of me. I gave him the snort wheeze. He turned my way but I lost sight of him. As I was watching for him another buck came in from behind me. I think it was a 7-8 point. A mature deer anyway. Closest he got was about 40 yds.

Anyway there seems to be some activity, but with it being this hot I'm not sure what the rut prospects are this year.

Michael, don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad to see that miss. Because I was beginning to wonder if you were human. With all of your usual posts, I was starting to think that you might be a robot, sent from the future to terminate all of the wildlife that you encountered.   :biglaugh:

Seriously, though, I have no doubt whatsoever that you will continue to lay them down until you hit your season limit.

P.S. I may just take you up on your offer. Give me a holler when you have time, and let's see if we can get our schedules to work out.

I sat in Oklahoma this evening and passed on the worlds longest spike...wish my phone and camera had not been dead so I could have gotten video. Got to watch him make a scrape about 40 yards from my stand too!    :bigsmyl:

I think things are starting to pick up a little even though it was still warm.   I had two young bucks under me this weekend.

I shot another hog:

this was my first kill with my new to me Tall Tines which is about 60# at my draw length.  With the extra weight, I decided to use a tree shark.  I have always been a Simmons fan but was afraid to use a head as wide as a tree shark.   I am really impressed.

TexasTrad, congratulations on another hog! Looks like the Simmons did a number on him!

Michael, I appreciate it, bud. Between the warm weather and dealing with the death of my sister, I have been having some real trouble getting motivated to do even the things that I love to do. I haven't been out to scout out any of my local spots, or anything. I know that getting out will help, but I just haven't been able to push myself to make the first steps.

Glad to see that you were able to make a recovery in KS, too!

Ive been hunting texoma today. I took a break from hunting my stand to go stomp around in some thick brushy stuff at  about noon today .
I spooked 2 hogs and man they sure spooked me back. I didn't like being surrounded by them thorn vines while they were snorting around at me and I had no line of site. I saw, as I promptly vacated the area, that the two of them were a little over knee high(not as big as my imagination implied). What would you have done? My mind was just telling me to gtfo.

I had a awesome, yet ultimately disappointing day in SW OK yesterday.

I had set up overlooking a ravine/drainage so that I could glass down it and towards the upwind side thinking that the deer may bed across from me with the winds at their back and a view in front of them.

A couple of hours with no sightings and all of a sudden I see a nice buck working his way down the center of the drainage below me.  He turned up the hill facing slightly to my right.  I lost sight of him, grabbed my bow, and shifted about 10 yards that way and tucked in behind a small juniper.

A couple of minutes later I hear him to the left of where I was standing!  He had cut up fold in the hill side and couldn't see him.  He was withing 5 yards of where I had been sitting, but the move I had made had helped.  I had tucked myself up into a larger juniper and had I stayed there it would have blocked any shot.

He finally stopped and gave me a little window between the larger juniper I had been sitting next to and a small one in front of it.  B/c of the hillside I could only see the tips of his antlers through the brush 15 yards away.

I drew my bow, slowly stood up from my knees and executed my shot perfectly.  Arrow went through the small opening exactly where I had wanted it to.  I saw him jump the string, but the flash of memory when I last saw the arrow looked good. I was positive I had connected...

He turned off and trotted back down the hill and slowed to a walk about 70 yards away.  I stood their in disbelief that there was no exit wound.  It was also at this moment I realized how nice of deer this was.  It would have been by far my largest with any weapon.  He vanished in the brush and I was still positive he was hit.  I thought that maybe I hit shoulder on the opposite side and it stopped the arrow.

After giving myself a couple of minutes to relax I went and looked for blood and the arrow.  No blood... doubt starts creeping in... eventually found my arrow buried in the dirt at the bottom of the hill.  Completely clean.

He must have dropped so hard at the shot that it went right over top of him.

There is some disappointment, but it is overwhelmed by the excitement of the moment. That I had headed into the unknown this year in an area that was unlike any I have ever hunted before and had an opportunity at a great buck. and the fact that I had executed my shot perfectly and placed it where I had intended.

That he had dodged my arrow is just a small asterisk on an otherwise great adventure.

Well I've hunted every chance I could get this week. I had Monday morning off and missed yet another coyote...ive missed more coyotes than any other animal I think. My shot was a grazing shot and drew blood. Missed another coyote that came through on the same trail as well. 30ish yards for both shots (I'm not afraid to fling arrows on coyotes)

After butchering both deer, I went to a public hunting spot for to sit it the first time. After only being in the stand a few minutes two coyotes came in right after a rattling sequence
...the smaller of the two passed at about 15 yards and I yelped to stop her before making a great shot for a bit of redemption.

As you can see from the pictures I'll be needing to re-fletch some arrows!

I saw some young bucks this weekend and had an 8 pointer at 10 yards for a while.

I am going to hunt Wed through Friday and then again on Sunday this week.

My good friend GW Flanagan hunted with me some last week at my farm.  Not only is GW a great bowyer and shot, he is a good hunter and good all around guy.  He recently retired from making his world class long bows and has more time to hunt.

GW made a great shot on a mature buck last Thursday which made for a short blood trail.  The buck weighed just under 150lbs field dressed which is pretty big for our area.

I broke a two-year dry spell this morning. He passed behind my stand twice yesterday morning but I couldn't get a shot. This morning he followed a doe on the wrong side of my stand, for him. His right G3 is broken off so he's not real pretty but I'm happy with him.

This doe came in walking straight towards me while ground hunting a new spot and I took a frontal shot at about 8 yards, she went 60 yards and left a profuse bloodtrail. It's not a shot I would take on a whitetail from a tree or at any distance beyond 12-15 yards but if it is placed properly with the right arrow/broad head it is pretty deadly.
This will be the 3rd whitetail I've taken with this shot and none of them have made it over 70 yards
