Welcome to the gang..
I'm sure every type of backing has been tried on here. Somebody will chime in soon.
If you haven't already, try the search feature up top. Probably more info on here than you can ever read.
It isnt legal to kill non venemous snakes in many states. Check local laws
I don't know about nonvenomous but you can't take the venomous snakes there. It's not too hard to find skins to buy, elsewhere.
Welcome from Michigan . :wavey:
I've done it yes some of them have really good coloration too. If you do be sure to mount the skins with a white, yellow or red back ground to show as much of the orange/red coloration as possible.
I had a really pretty pair that I sent to a guy who had them put on black glass and ruined the color
Every spring the country roads are abound with road killed bull and rat snakes in my area. I always try to avoid hitting live snakes but not everyone is so courteous to our scally friends. I won't pass up an opportunity to pick up a snake over 3ft long with minimal damage. I found a 6ft black snake, when stretched he shows red between the scales and sure is pretty. I 2nd using a light background.
After the scales are taken off black snakes skins quite often still show the pattern, especially if you have a light background. I have done 4 bows with them.
Don't know much about snakeskins, but welcome to the Gang!!!

I've used lots of black snakes. Some yellow, orange, or red mixed in. They do hold their color nicely. Dark colored limbs don't help them, however. Add them to a new osage bow and they explode with color. On wood bows you can always stain the back only of them prior to adding skins. It helps accentuate the skins pattern.
