Title: Who shoots Easton Axis shafts?
Post by: longbow fanatic 1 on September 17, 2016, 06:46:00 PM
I'm interested to know your thoughts on these arrows. It sounds like the X-HIT inserts allow you to customize your tuning of these shafts. Any info would be appreciated. Thx

I shoot axis. The brass inserts are tunable to either 50 or 75 grains. The aluminum ones are 16 grains. The one thing I do not like about them is getting an insert out without damaging the shaft. FMJs curl/flare out real easy when attempting this. Real good arrows though, the standard black axis as well as the Trads.

I switched over to Black Eagles deep impacts though fwiw. More durable than the axis

Without a doubt Easton axis traditional  and full metal jackets are my favorite arrow. When I stopped shooting wood arrows I tried these shafts and love them. The skinny shaft penetrates great!!

What a great arrow! They are all I use now. You can tune the insert using the break-off brass ones and the aluminum one as mentioned above. I also have begun using the Gold Tip Traditional Ballistic collars in a size 600 for my Axis 400 and 340 shafts. They provide a little footing and protect the HIT insert while bumping the weight up front by an extra 15 grains. I have had absolutely no issues damaging shafts while taking inserts in and out. Simply thread a field point into the insert about 1/4 of the way in, heat it carefully with a torch and pull it out. Super easy and I have never had an issue damaging the arrow. Use the Big Jim's hot melt and you will not be disappointed. Here is a pick of my shaft with the collar. Good luck!

If you go with them you will not be disappointed. I have found them to be much more durable that the FMJs, comparatively cheap, and very  consistent.

Tough true flying shafts,  I foot them with 1.5 inches of cut aluminum.  Only busted one on a stone impact which had a ding in the side.
Comes out at 570 odd grains with a 150 group head.

No problem getting HIT inserts out if you use Big Jim's Quick Stick glue instead of that useless epoxy that comes with the arrows.

I also use axis along with gold tip ballistic collar glued on as footing. This set up is the most durable for the money you can find. To avoid any trouble in insert gluing I always sand lightly the insert in order to get a smooth sliding inside the shaft and try it dry mounted on a field point before. It is best to glu it once dry fitting is not too tight.
To take off insert whatever glu you use (except hot melt) you just take off the nock, put a 4" 4mm brass or steel rod inside ( an old drill bit is perfect),put again the nock, hang the shaft from the nock side and whip the shaft in order to get the metal rod hammering out the insert. It takes less than 30 seconds to take it out once you got the trick and absolutely no damage to the carbon. Take care to do this outside in a safe place.

My hunting arrow. I have the older black shafts. I use the 100 grain inserts, 2" alum footing and 150 BH. When I saw how much better my practice points penatrated in targets I was sold. I also found these slimmer shafts easier to tune.

How do the axis compare to the FMJ weight wise? I have the FMJ  that I really like but I can't get past the ugly diamond plate pattern.

Zippercurve,

I just checked for you...the Gold Tip Traditional Collar in a 600 size will fit the Easton Axis Traditional 500 shaft nearly perfectly. The Traditional shafts have the wood grain photo finish which is a little thicker than the plain black Axis shaft. Hope that helps!

This is my third season shooting the axis traditional shafts.   I really like them.

I use regular old glue sticks from the crafts section at Walmart for my inserts. Very cheap, never had one pull out, and easily removed by heating the tip.

I use regular black axis, it is a good arrow you won't be dissappointed. I am not sold on the FMJ? Seems like an overpriced aluminum arrow to me?? If that aluminum gets bent then the arrow is done. Regular carbons are either straight or broken!

FMJ 400's are about 50 grains heavier than their 400 carbon counterpart.
