Who is hunting Kansas? I invite you to share your experiences here. This will be my first year to hunt Kansas and I made my first sit this afternoon. I gave wile coyote a haircut and had a bobcat walk within 5 yards of my tree. No deer today but I'm sure it had to do with the predator presence.

Good luck Michael! I hope I get to add some quality content to this thread in a little over a month when I get up there!
Bisch
Didn't get drawn this year. First time ever. Good luck.
It was a warm night, few skeeters but not to bad. No target bucks showed up but did get to see a young one I was wanting to see. He has a ton of potential and will be a nontypical, seen 7 does and fawns by my truck walkin out. Lol!
Good luck hunting Michael and everybody else, raining hard here this morning.
Tracy
Good luck Michael.
I am ready, just need some cooler weather.
Good luck Michael keep us posted!
:campfire:
Wow! No face cover! If I sat on my stand without a face cover as well as repellant, the mosquitoes would make it impossible to sit on the stand. Good luck, and stay with it.
I be there in 2 weeks, for some scouting and maybe some doe patrol.
Then back for 3 weeks in November.
Have hunted KS a lot since 2007.
I didn't draw western Kansas this year!!! It happens.
You'll definitely have some run ins with the coyotes. This is how mine ended. A first for me.
Good luck!!!

Michael,

The way it's going I might have to use my catfish boat to get to my stand tonight lol! Man were getting a bunch of rain this week in eastern KS.
Tracy
Eastern Kansas? Tracy where you at? Im in Franklin County.x2 on the rain!
Douglas!
Tracy
Lol! We're neighbors!!!

Good Luck guys!
Hey- I am down the road from Tracy!. . .literally a few miles! :)
Good hunting guys.
Dan in KS
We've had almost 8" of rain here in Jeff county. Pretty soggy and slippery out there...
Good luck and be careful.
Dan, we still need to get that cup of coffee, got to chasing trophy bluecats and forgot about it. Good luck if you get out!
Paul, same hear bud might have to start wearing hip waders to check my cams, lol. Haven't been able to hunt this guy all week because of the wind and watching from a distance seen him by my stand three times. Should be good tomorrow though!

Out in the daylight! Any updates Michael???
Tracy
Wow!! What a buck. Good luck
Sweet buck Tracy!
Tracy, don't be shooting my deer! That's Ole' Moose and I've been hand feeding him all summer!
You might know him as Bullwinkle!
Yup Tracy. . . though if I had a buck like that figured out I may not have much time for coffee! :bigsmyl:
Go get him. . . we'll connect soon.
Dan
Beautiful morning, little fog nice and cool.

How's the hunt going Michael???
Tracy
:shaka:
Good luck guys.....
,,Sam,,
Good Luck Michael, Hope you have a good update.
Whew I'm in a tree again it's pretty warm tonight! Haven't hunted since Thursday. I'll be traveling up into Kansas for day hunts until Oklahoma's opener October 1st
...I ended up seeing 4 does tonight but they were right across the fence on private land at about 25-30 yards so no shot. Glad to see some deer though.
I'll be there in November. I love my Kansas trips. Spring and fall.
Good luck sir.
Well looks like in in the K.S.Trapper area as I live in Douglass and hunt in Cowley county so Hope everyone has a good season. Been a bunch of nice bucks crossing our place hoping for cooler weather. Paul we've had around 14" down here.
That's a lot of rain Joe. Glad to hear that you are seeing deer.
My county's deer population still hasn't recovered from that EHD that went through a few years back. Nobody is seeing nothing from folks that I've talked to. It seems that east of 75 and north of 70 was the area hit hardest.
The whole eastern side of KS suffered through the blue tounge out break. If you read the reviews and reports from the Fish and game they said Douglas and Franklin Co. We're the worst but I don't believe it. Everyone I talked to through out the state was finding dead deer in numbers.
It's not over yet, it's always been here and deer are still dying and deer are still being found that died. I have seen several in person mostly large bucks but I've also seen survivors, there hooves will look funny and some look like there shedding there hooves. Biologists list this as they lived through stage 2 of EHD.
It was a tuff few years, and we found (smelled) many dead bucks and does while running our cams and hunting. But I dare say which county got it worse. Just hope it dosent hit us again like that for a long, long time.
Tracy
Just curious is there any relationship between man made feeding sites and blue tongue? I have heard that the disease is spread thru contact with infected surfaces. I do not know if that is true.
EHD or blue tounge is not new, it has always been around, I remember reading about it when I was young. It is passed from a midge in the water that they drink in contaminated pools of water. Drought years are the worst I know that and I'm not a biologist just what I have read. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I've posted anything wrong.
Tracy
Good luck Michael have fun, thank for taking us along.
Best of luck to all......

A lone doe came through at around 20 yards in the last few minutes of shooting light. Not cool, looks like liver and one lung with some digestive matter...have to go look in the morning before it heats up
Ugh.....chunks aren't good. Good luck, hope you find her.
Well it began pouring down rain about 9:30 last night (2) hours after my shot and rained all night. I grid searched for hours today but was not able to find her. I'm pretty upset with myself as this is the first deer I haven't found that was hit further back...I'm pretty sure I could have found her if not for the rain.
Part of hunting. Nobody likes it but it will happen. Stay after them!
Nick
Chin up, Michael. We've all been there. Nothing goes to waste in nature. The effort you put in searching for her is what matters.
Went out yesterday evening, and took my oldest boy (5 now). We hunted on the east side of our property with a N wind that was good for the direction the deer would enter the food plot. The plot is an interior plot with brassica/beets, the deer will usually feed here before working out to one of our bean fields on the south edge of the property. a About 5 PM we had the first set of does / fawns enter the field. All was looking good as the plan was to shoot a doe to get the season started. Then about 5:30 two bucks showed up, one a 2.5 yr old with some awesome potential, forked G2's & 3's, and with him was a 5 yr old 8, one of the deer on the shoot list for the year. The bucks and does worked our way but the old doe must be familiar with our blind set as she dropped into the ditch to the east instead of walking by the blind. She used the ditch to circle to our NE and pick up our wind. She made a racket and cleared the field for us. going to to wait till we get a strong west wind and sit NE of the blind set and see if I can't kill her. Thats a good all day stand for the rut and I can have her blowing up the field every time.
Scrape activity is sure picking up marking there territories, started moving my cams to them today. This 3yr old has been chasing everything around like he's something. Good to see and has great potential!

Tracy
Looks good to me Tracy. Beautiful animal! I got a late start this year, got my stand up though, I should be good sitting in a week or 2. I got ahold of Jim today from Anneewakee Archery, my Slim Jim quiver should be in this week. Also will be shooting my new to me Mohawk longbow this year. I'm worse than my 6 year old boy at Christmas.
You would think it was the end of October the way the deer are acting around here right now. I have as many does marking scrapes as I do bucks.

Lots of activity, just a couple picks to many to post. Keeps raining and storming but supposed to be done after tonight for a while. Nice and cool to, good luck everybody!
Tracy
Yep, good luck and stay safe. Remember to wear orange this weekend as it is the "special" antlerless deer gun season on Saturday and Sunday statewide.
Thanks paul I didn't know that!
You're welcome, but better check the regs at the KDWP+T$ to see how much orange is required.
I love my place in Kansas. November 6th can't get here fast enough!
Nice pics kstrapper.
Well I haven't been up since our Oklahoma season opened but I'm back in the stand close to cherryvale KS after doing some scouting.

Enjoy...full edited video
https://youtu.be/ubCRy7z8liA
Long story short I was not able to recover this buck...He ran onto an adjoining property and the owner (who is also an avid bowhunter) wouldn't give me permission to access and find my buck. I had the full video up but took it down because my windows editing software somehow reduced my quality.
Anyone know of a good video editing software I could get? preferably free?
Was a pretty good evening sit, more pictures tomorrow... [IM

Nice buck Andrew!. Congratulations.
WOW! That is a nice buck. Congrats
Nice Buck! I can't wait to here the story behind this one. :)
I'm not much of a story teller... buck is actually a deer I passed last year from the same tree at 5 yards. At the time I believe he was 5, I only let him walk because I had a bigger deer in range I was just waiting on to step into a shooting lane. Any way he worked in behind me but I had plenty of warning as it was quite still and heard him well before he was visible. Shot was slightly quartering towards at about 14 yards. The arrow was true for heart and both lungs. He made it down into a ditch about 50 yards from the shot.

DANDY!!!
Tim
Wow, what a great looking buck! Congratulations! :clapper:
Bernie
Great deer and great shot.
How much did that buck weigh? Looks like a hoss.
Congrats again
Thanks Guys, will try to answer some questions above.
- I could spin off another thread, not sure how much I'll have to add however. Didn't take all that many pics of the deer from different angles. I always kick my self for that. It's been very warm here in KS this year so I wanted to get to processing quickly and get the hid off & in the fridge along with the meat.
- Never did weigh him, was definitely a large bodied deer even for the midwest.
- Obligatory equipment list:
River Runner bow that should pull about 65 at 30.5 DL.
Full length 75/95 GT Trads with Zwicky 145 deltas & 125 grn steel adapters
- Lone Wolf Hand Climber stand (I mostly hunt out of these and love the flexibility) I also tend to sit very high almost always above 20 feet if the tree with permit.
Wow that is s beauty.congratulations. Kansas seems to have some big deer.
Great buck! Congrats! :clapper: :clapper:
November 9 ~ Kansas 10
Huckbuck and I have been at deer camp in SE KS since November 4th battling unseasonably warm weather. When you get the opportunity to combine deer camp fellowship with the chance at a nice KS buck...sometimes I feel spoiled.
We've seen several and had some opportunities but none that felt right for one reason or the other. In fact I had a shot at this same 10 last evening. Had him at 8 yards but slight quartering to was the shot. I decided to let him walk and to be honest after running thru in my head a few times I was kickin myself. But as luck would have it this morning he came back chasin à doe. There were four bucks within 25 yards eyeing this particular doe. As I watched them chase her away into another tree row I decided to try a grunt. He came on a string and this time the 5 yrd double lung shot was one I would not pass . A short 60 yrd blood trail and I was blessed to find him under a cedar. A good day for sure and the tools used held true. 56" Javaman Elkheart #45, Wilderness custom arrows, Ace heads. Huckbuck is still at it. We've seen a biggon and he's hopeful to see him up close soon.

Way to go guys! I hunted 8 days from 10/29 - 11/5 near Bazine, in unit 5. It was hot as hades, with a couple days over 90*! I never saw a buck till the last day. A dink on the morning hunt, and a nice shooter 10 on the evening hunt. He came in too late and just would not turn to a good position for me to make it work.
I did, however, make a great shot on a big ole doe on 11/2 on the evening hunt. It just amazes me how big bodied those deer are compared to ours in central Tx!

After seeing that good buck on the last evening, I really want to go back until I can get one of those bruisers!
Bisch
Congrats Bisch

Nice big doe!
Great deer guys, looks like a ton of fun!
You guys are very fortunate to be able to
Hunt the places you do. Enjoy it!
Some beautiful animals here in Kansas....hoping this is my year. I've been out a few times so far but no luck yet. Seen a few does but haven't gotten close enough. Finally cooled off a bit and hoping this weekend is fruitful. One buck I had on camera last year is back hoping his big brother is still around too.
Good luck out there fellas and stay safe.
God bless!
Guru got here on the 3rd, started hunting on the 4th, been into them everyday lots of searching bucks. Called in several grunting or rattling, tried a decoy and it worked got two bucks to play.
Things changed about Monday the 7th, chasing, pushing and checking does began. Bucks running all over the place pre rut full swing bigboys showing up great action till early afternoon evenings pretty slow.
Thursday 10th does seen being breed by bucks, big bucks!
That's what it looks like around here in eastern KS right now, might want to get out there and enjoy it. We have deer down and story coming later on a thread.
Tracy
Wondered when you were going to show up Tracy. :)
Looking forward to "The rest of the story"...
