How many have you heard the term "big doe"? How many times have you said it? My daughter and I listen for it in every hunting conversation were part of. I bet I have said it a million times myself. "I saw a deer, it was a doe. Big doe". "I got a deer, it was a doe. Big doe". Listen for it from now on. It will make you laugh.
I would rather have a lot of doe (dough). :-)
I actually chuckled just reading it. But around here they are "big ol' does"
I call em fat girls lol. Sure hope to which a fat girl soon
Snot blowin' big ol' does!
I guess people are trying to justify killing a doe and make it sound better.
Unless its a Mule of a deer, for me, its a good deer regardless. They all taste good.
For me this fall it was a big cow...an elk that was so tall and big in the body that I would have sworn it was a bull...yet closer examination revealed no antlers...when I am hunting by myself I look for smaller animals...easier to handle

They eat better too!!
For me I have taken two big doe's .
150# + field dressed .
I have taken several that where 115# .
Yep , there are big doe's around and I've known of a couple that went over 200# .
I like big old doe's but I'd rather drag a small one unless I could get some :help: :biglaugh:
they're the smart ones. take 'em out!
I shot a doe last year. Big doe> Well maybe not but it's my story. Ya, lets go with big.
"She was big, ewww she was big" Benny Hill
I don't talk about it unless back it up and this really is one, Guru shot her while hunting here in 2006.

Got the the hunt on video shot from a blind. Your right though, I hear the big doe thing quite often.
Tracy
A big doe is larger than the norm, just like a big buck. The fun isn't in the kill anyways, but rather the hunt, and any animal taken is a trophy to be proud of and appreciated.
k.s. trapper, WOW
Haha I've told some big doe stories myself. Its the hunters version of fish tales
I've shot alot of does , some big some not so much . I like to eat
That's funny. I here that phrase a lot also. I'm sure I've said it myself. I think a lot of times " a big ol Doe" may be referring to an adult doe, not a fawn or a young doe. Sounds better. Lol
I laugh more when people call fawns yearlings, but that's another topic.
We had a doe taken off our lease with bow that field dressed 193#. Her body looked like a mature buck with a huge brisket and a big ol' roman nose. I guess we called her a "HOG" Doe! :-)
Any picks of that 193# field dressed doe? I would really like to see that.
Tracy
I like it when people add "mule headed" between big ol' and doe.....for a big ol' mule headed doe
There are big does, little does, and in between. If it's being said to try and make up for it not being a buck then yeah, it's kind of silly. Having said that I did take one in KY several years back (rifle) that really was good sized and more fat than any deer I have taken or anyone with me has taken.....and I called her a big doe. Now; If it's 1.5 years or older I'm taking it when I'm out with traditional gear and I'll be very happy about it!
Them big old girls are the teachers......next time the buck you want to shoot outsmarts you....you can thank his Mama.
FlintNSteel, Another name for fawns is "meat deer".
if you can consistently harvest the "big mature does" then bucks are easy.........
My brother's first bow deer was a "Big Doe".
She ran 70 yards and lost a pound a yard!
That happens Bruce. I have had that happen. Antlers even do that.
KS has huge doe. I think bucks are born with 4 points. And doe are fat already when they are born. Weve killed some doe that looked like they had horse heads.
To out wit a big mature doe is the same to me as outwitting a mature buck. A mother's survival instincts are a hard thing to beat. I have had a big Ole' mature doe give me up on more then one occasion while in the field. But I consider myself blessed to harvest a "big ole' wise nanny" and will not hesitate to take one.
I see those really big does and all I see is great genetics, it's not just the bucks that pass on great genes. They get a pass from us, heck we haven't shot does for years on several of our places and the numbers are still dropping.
Used to be when they started giving out all those extra doe tags and saying got to thin the does, got to thin the does. Come opening morning of rifle and for the next few days the hills and valleys around here sound like a rifle range. The last few years not!!! Here a bang every now and then there just that thin.
So for us we pass for now and besides if you shoot a big buck you get lots and lots of meat!!!
Tracy
The size of all deer, but especially does, is directly related to the amount of alcohol imbibed around the campfire just prior to telling the hunting story.
Well, I'm planning on getting a BIG OLE doe on opening day on the first of October!
Bisch
I just missed a big doe this morning. Shot right over her back :banghead:
Big doe. I had to call a buddy to help drag her. I couldn't hardly move her.

You didnt have to move her far. Looks like she fell in your garage already gutted. Nice!
I usually come up with the term big, medium or small during the drag.. if I struggle saying the words Big Doe,,, then its a pretty big doe trust me.
to be fair on myself in these parts I say 90+ is a Mature Doe, 120+ is a Decent sized Doe,,,, 150+ undressed is a Big Doe,, 200+ undressed is a Big Fat Ole Mama Queen of the Herd Doe...

...Yeah I'm one of those lol
As far as "Big Does" I prefer the term "Monster Doe" ...sounds funnier
This is my "monstah doe" she tipped the butcher scales at 122 field dressed with heart/lungs removed

Our "big does" weight rough 90/100lbs.
We call them nanner heads down here. They have a way of making a fella look stupid. RC
They seem to get bigger the further you drag 'em...
Not all does get to be so big there a special animal and it takes big doe to hold up some of our big boys!!! :bigsmyl:

Tracy
Reddogge and Michael nice big does and thanks for posting the picks.
Tracy
Thanks Tracy,
Here is a shot of her as she lay but the hanging shot gives a clue as to how big she was. Sadly we forgot to weigh her.

The deer in these pictures are true "Big Does".
I never shot a little doe in my life! It was either a big doe or a nice one. :biglaugh:
My does are big does or it'll fry. The deer may be small but the story is big.
