I have never been the type to post much on here. I'm more of the guy that sits back and learns from you fellas that could really show me how it's done. But with the opening day that I had here in the mountains of nc (and a little nudging by dalton), I figured id go ahead and tell my story!
I don't know know about the rest of yall, but once the turkeys stop gobbling ever year I start to get that itch to be sitting in a deer stand. Opening day just always seems to be better than Christmas for a redneck like me. I started putting out cameras around July this year and much to my surprise, one of the first deer that showed up was a good looking 9 point. As that glorious opening day drew nearer and nearer the pics started revealing that I was hunting a good deer for these parts. I knew this guy we named "no brows" schedule better than I knew my own! EVERY evening at 630-7 he was 8 yards from my stand. After an eventful opening morning with no shots, it was finally time for the anticipated evening hunt!
Sounds as if the anticipated hunt would be in the afternoon.
After letting a few does and small bucks do their thing, I checked my phone and it was 650. There was a spike milling around the base of my tree and his demeanor completely turned on a dime. He looked up the ridge and I saw my boy working his way in. To say that I kept it together is a lie. I was tore up from the floor up. No brows wasted no time going from 60 yards to 8. But for over ten minutes I had to watch him because he never offered a shot. By this point I was starting to settle in a little and about that time he took a step and was broadside. I just started to put tension on the string and he busted me. Forget a deer in the headlights look, he was giving the I see an idiot in that tree look! After giving the head bob for a minute he took a hop back to leave. Only problem was he hesitated for about 5 seconds. I don't remember a thing about the shot except for thinking it's now or never. I let her fly and I knew it was perfect! He tore off and within 5-10 seconds I heard crashing in the holler! Oh yeah, I forgot, this is all on video so after I hear the crash the hyperventilating ensues. I immediately call Dalt. Yall know him, right? We have tried to remember exactly what I said to him, but it made no sense. Regardless, he got the point, no brows was no more! He of course started the threats, "if you trail him without me, I'll kill you!" So of course I had to wait. After a grueling hour and a half, I had my crew rounded up. Me, Dalton, Jim(tarponnut), and two other guys. We started on the trail and after only 75-100 yards, Dalton stopped abruptly and turned to me with a big grin. There was my boy! So the celebration started, and to be honest I still haven't come down from the high yet! I couldn't have drawn up a better experience to take my first good deer with a trad bow. Dalt will get yall the pics after while, but I figured I'd share my story with yall!

All summer we practiced together at our shot distances, I'd tell him alright here's your shot, no brows at 10yards broadside...and he'd say while I was shooting, alright here's shorty 8yards broadside let's see what you do, 3 days in, we both have our boys on the ground! Does it get any better than stickbows and friends that are more like family?!
Congrats!!!

Terrific deer and fun reading your telling of it!
Well told and well done!
Congratulations again Ethan. This is something you two will always remember and cherish just like it was yesterday! I could use a few good buddies like that around here! I still get the pep talk about how I should go back to the compound and quit hunting with trad equipment because I'm really just making things harder on myself!!lol I mean really?! Some of these guys around here should really hang their compounds up and go back to their rifles!Lol Same difference isn't it?! I'm not looking for easy! Good job guys. I can't wait to see what else you two put on the ground this year.
That's awesome Ethan!!
