Anyone have any good plans for deer season? I know we'eve got a hunt up in the northwest that Dalton is hosting. Lets hear your schemes and stories for the season.
Any luck on opening day? I did a little wandering this morning and checked on a big oak I spotted a few weeks ago. Its dropping acorns and the deer have torn it up since I was last there.
I made the scouting trip with Dalton in August, so I'm mentally prepared, and excited about what I saw. But being from the WV hills originally, I think there is something at the genetic level that won't even allow me to buy my license until we have a week without a temperature in the 90s and at least one morning in the 50s!
I hunted this morning until about 12:30... 90 degrees and miserable! I was reminded once again why I rarely hunt until October.
two nice toms walked past me at 10 yards this morning, oblivious to my presence. Go figure.
Haha that's how it goes mangonboat. I scared two out of their roost ten feet from the car. Saw 5 tons together by the side of the road and they all had nice beards. It was pleasantly cool in the mountains today.
I couldn't imagine hunting deer down south in that heat. Bet you guys gotta high tail them home to get them cooled down quick..
We had a stellar opening day here in the mountains! Ethan killed a beautiful opening day buck, his biggest by far with a trad bow. 10 yard ****, 100yard recovery, all on film to boot.

So glad deer season is back!!
Nice job Ethan! What's the story behind it Dalton? Morning or evening?
Congrats Ethan. Dalton we want to see the video.
Jeff
That's a fine buck! On opening day no less! I can't wait to hunt this stand of oaks that's tore up. I struggled to find acorns last year and they weren't hitting the ones I did.
Should I hunt these oaks in morning or evening?
I can't imagine hunting the low country parts of the south this time of year in the heat. It was 53 degrees when I got in the car yesterday morning in the smokies.
Beautiful buck!
Congratulations on a great buck!!
A great way to start the season!
Congratulations to Ethan - very nice buck!
I hunted opening morning and evening - saw 1 doe that morning and 5 does plus one cow horn during the evening hunt. Found my first rub of the season also...This is in piedmont part of the state.
Awesome Buck, congrats..
ttt
Congratulations Ethan on fine buck!
 :clapper:
I hunted 2 hours yesterday morning in northern Moore County. The only thing I saw was a lizard crawling on one window of my ground blind and that was it. My clothes weighed ten pounds more when I got home than they did when I left home. It's amazing how much a fella can sweat in 90 degree weather inside a ground blind! :scared: :knothead:

Great buck. I took a nice doe Saturday afternoon.
Cooler weather comes. I sat for only two hours Saturday morn. Saw only one squirrel. Didn't even consider an evening sit. I was drenched from other chores.
Congrats Ethan!
I am happy to be following deer threads again. Congrats Ethan.
Forgot to mention, I was hunting our property in Randolph County, NC.
Nice Buck! Congrats!!!
Nice buck and Phillip on the doe
That's a great start to the season Ethan....congrats indeed!
Ethan congrats! That is a awesome deer!
Great buck Ethan - congratulations!!

These acorns are rough this year. Just ask Jim Dussias who is up here hunting with me for 4 days, really making things difficult. I hate them!
That is a great buck. I spent the weekend on the baseball field with the boys, but have really lost interest in bowhunting down here in the south until the weather cools. Hopefully not much longer....
I appreciate it fellas! One of my best days in the stand by far! The film is a little embarrassing because of the hyperventilating! But hey, that's what it's all about!
Acorns are good - you just have to find the tree the deer like best...But what do I know, I've only been bowhunting about 40 years...lol
Went sat evening, daughters first hunt. We were in a blind but nothing to see, squirrels is all.
Went in a little early this afternoon - got in the woods about 3:30...Spooked one deer while climbing - it ran off snorting - and another one about a half hour later about 25 yards behind my tree - could have been the same doe I spooked while climbing coming back to 'find' me - not sure though.
Grunted a few times about 6:30 due to pure boredom and had 2 does come looking for the source of the grunting...One was a long nosed smart old girl - she was determined to find the source of the grunting and circled downwind and smelled me - spooking and snorting over and over.....lol.....Not sure what was going on but my scent trail must have been hanging low cause I don't usually have deer smell me like that....
I think I'm going to try a few morning hunts...These hot afternoons are not much fun for hunting......

Very nice Buck great job!
Wow! Really nice buck - great work out there!
How's everyone doing so far? Our crew has had a great season so far, I'm excited to see what else happens. This heat is miserable however, and I'll be glad to see it go. What about you guys?
I haven't been out a single time yet. With commitments first, it will probably 2 more weeks before I can make my first trip.
The Wife and I went to Charlotte to see the PBR/Bull riding last weekend. I loafed a bit during the day and road through PeeDee Gamelands. Beautiful place. Saw a deer at the info box. Any of you fella hunt there?RC
We need to bring this tread back to the top. Hows everyone's season going? I managed to tag a couple of does with my longbow. Has anyone seen any rut activity yet?
Jeff
RC, wish I had known you were so close, I would have bought you lunch or something. Haven't seen you in a few years. That deer you saw doesn't know how lucky it was to survive its encounter with you!
About three weeks ago I was seeing lots of activity, but it had dwindled to almost nothing here in NC. So I'm packing my truck and headed to whitetail heaven.....
RC - I tried hunting PeeDee 3 seasons ago. I used aerial imaging and a few scouting days to get a feel for the area I planned to hunt. On 3 consecutive sits I notice that I had climbed a tree that had been climbed multiple times before - all 3 different locations, and all significantly scarred by climbers in the past. That was it for me - that's more pressure than I care to hunt around.
Wow! That is an amazing animal.
Holchin when are you pulling out?
Jeff
Been after them but have not yet to see one in daylight hours??lol
Good places far as sign goes just vampires only walking at night. Was confident with setups going into season but just cant seem to catch them right? trail cams are proving they are there but all night time movement.

Hello from the mountains. I have had a decent season so far, but only one small buck down, took a spike last of September with my recurve after passing him up about a dozen times. My wife complaining about our freezer being almost empty prompted me to dump the string on him. Been getting some very good bucks on camera....but all at night so far. Not much rut activity showing up here just yet. Maybe soon! And what a dandy buck huskyarcher! Congrats!

Kevin Steinmetz Sherrils Ford NC with a nice doe. Black Widow Recurve - Sasquatch Broadheads.
I was up in WNC a couple weeks back. Never saw a single deer this year at any time or place.
Not many deer around in Graham county, but it's been that way for years. :banghead:
It's so hot and dry it's no wonder. We haven't even had a good frost yet. I just took my dogs walking through our woods, like walking on potato chips. I only found one rub on a small birch tree and it wasn't all that new. We have a good acorn crop but not too many. I think the dryness is affecting movement.
We only had 3/4" of rain last month(should have been 4" to 6"), none so far this month and not expected for at least the next to days. I think we are behind by 10" at least and fire danger is scary.
I killed this buck opening weekend. Sept 11 I believe. I have a hard time with pictures here, but here is the earlier link. This deer was taken in Alamance county.

Congrats. Nice buck.

Have been out only 4 times this season due to work and other reasons but have yet to see ANY deer on the public land I hunt. Woods seem DEAD. Lots of acorns but evrything extremely dry. Leaves only 1/2 dropped, coloration poor, really atypical saeson here.
How's it going guys? Been tough for me. My main hunting ground is on fire. I've got to do some quick scouting on a new area this week. It's got some very steep mountains but has some very flat little valleys and creek bottoms. One area appears to have been logged down on the bottom. Any tips for some quick scouting?
Dry for me, and not just the weather. Hunted for 3 days in mid-October, and didn't see a thing. It was dry then, too, and the wind thought it was blowing through Wyoming. Squirrels were wearing safety harnesses. Taking next week off to hunt, but that is because I have to project PTO so far in advance, I either go now regardless of weather, or I don't go at all. Was headed to Ashe County - not sure now, but probably still going to give it a whirl. It is the only time off I will have before the end of the year.
How long ago was that area logged? Logged or clear-cut areas really open up the forest for feed growth and thick cover. Run the edges, and you'll find the travelways quickly. Good areas for whitetails.
wheres the video? congrats
