It is no longer commercially available in the US by law. It is still legal to purchase old objects made from seal skin, such as coats, dreamcatchers, etc. I had the good fortune of aquiring a few pieces from a Trad Gang member. Pm sent.

Vendor?  No.

Folks who were chopping up Grandma's sealskin coat - yes.

That's what I like for a shelf.

Thank you, Grandma...and a Merry Christmas to you too! I took the plunge when everybody was investing in crappy old gold....when the grid fries I'll be the Trump of the zombie apocalypse!

My understanding is that it is even illegal to cut things made of sealskin up to use for another purpose...just be careful how you go about doing it...if you happen to be coming to Canada to hunt simply add some while you are here...trade in sealskin here is perfectly legal

You couldn't bring it across the border.

Ed Schlief, of ABS, rest his soul, introduced me to Sealskin thru his biz (ABS).

he would have native AK make the squares..run a stitch across one side of the 2"x2" square and that made it a Manufactured product, which at that time was adequate for peddling by a 3rd party.

Over time, he found none of the Native AK willing to set up to even buy a sewing machine to do the "Producing" and he gave up trying to peddle it.

I think...THINK, there is a lot of mis-information on what is or is NOT legal on sealskin as in coats, etc.

Once, if it was manufactured by a native AK enterprise, it was legal... the coats in the USA were likely "grandfathered" but that is an assumption, not a known fact.

I covet what of it I got from ABS as it is the best material I've found, but... there are many ways to skin the cat or the shelf as it were!  :)

Seal Skin is the best shelf and pass material in my opinion, but if you cant get it, then a little path of calfhide treated with bear or duck fat is a close second.

If you cut the hair on sealskin short it looks like calf hair (and works better too)...it would take a very sharp eyed border agent closely inspecting your bow to catch it...and even then one wonders if they would want to go to the trouble of making an issue of it...not suggesting you bring back a chunk of it, just what you glue on your bow
