Title: Camping setups for archery shoots
Post by: PeteA on August 30, 2016, 08:00:00 AM
I just went to a northern NY multi day archery shoot and camped out for three days. I'd like to see some photos of your camp set ups for various archery shoots. Looking for some ideas and suggestions for set ups, equipment, etc.

Nothing fancy for me , just a tin tipi .
The wife wouldn't sleep on the ground .

I don't have any pics, but I have a little popup camper that I bought just for taking to shoots. I really like staying right at the shoot rather than leaving and going off to a hotel. It just seems like I am missing things when I go off to a hotel.

I am a tent type of guy.  When I go camping, I like to sleep on the ground, not it a mobile home.  I do however enjoy having a pop-up tent to go over the picnic table/chairs just to not be confined in the tent when the weather is sub-par.  Here are a couple photos from a shoot my father and I attended a couple weeks ago in Northern Illinois.

Large Coleman tent with a picnic table covered.

Prime reason for the shelter over the table:  Still have Spam and Eggs in the morning while it's raining.

I'll tell you though, this was the first time I've ever been to a shoot and camped.  Usually just go shoot one day and leave.  We had a blast!  Caught a walleye, handful of catfish, and just sat around camp and enjoyed each other's company.  Dad still puts a good whooping on me in backgammon though, not sure I'll ever win!

Spam and eggs.  Dang, I forgot about that! My Mom used to cook that for my Dad and me about 50 years ago.

I've tried it a few times but the last time was just too much.  Between the screaming kids running through my camp and me having to scrape the dog poop off my boots I've decided that somewhere else other than the shoots is where I'll stay.

We used to tent it. Made a family affair out of 4 day shoot. We camped away from the group. My special was Spam and scrambled eggs with some bacon mixed in. These days it will be off the ground.

Jumping Jack or Springbar tent.  The Jack is easy to setup, even in the dark and makes my wife want to go too.

One or two nighter: air mattress in the Ford Explorer.

Three nights or more: 12 x 12 tent and a cot. To quote a friend, "One man in an eight man tent is Zen-like".

I always take a pop up canopy with two sides, lounge lawn chair, small table, and cooler of PBR's.  ;)

My brothers 78 Cox camper. Took it to Denton Hill this year and going to do a hunt out of it in Oct. Works great.

Just realized I have no pictures of my camps. for a 3 nighter I take a 4 man Kelty tent, cot and 10x10 pop up and cook under it. For a two nighter I just take my 2 man Eureka and sleep on the ground. I buy food at this shoot.

Ha, found one. An old one but the camp hasn't changed much.

We started with a tent, then a pop up, then a trailer, then a bigger trailer, then an R-V.  Enough was enough, with the big trailer or the R-V, why bother leaving home?  We are now back to a tent, a Kodiak 10x14.

This is my set-up but I usually only use it to sleep.

Pat B

Looks like you also have the Cabelas Outback Lodge. I love my 12x12. Just not wild about the 50 ropes to stake out.

I was at Cabalas last week and saw the price is now $425. I paid $239 for mine several years ago. Geesh!

I always say the single center pole is for dancin'!

RB,

Yea, but it doesn't float well...wasn't that you guys I helped move out of the depression at Standing Stone sitting in 6" of water?

RB, this one is a 10x10. I bought it from Pearl Drums for $200. It hadn't been used much before I got it. I think he got the 12x12 which would be better for me but I'm not paying $400 for it. Just enough room inside for me and all my crap!

This is great guys. I'm hoping to get to a few more multiday shoots this season and hope to perfect my tarp and tent set up. Hanks for the input.

That was me Dave. Camping on the trap range sounded like a good idea 'til the monsoon hit.  :)

Last spring at the R100 in Columbia, MO, slept in a tent with just a folding chair outside.  Weather was great and would have brought a pop up awning type if we were to get wet.  One thing that was a pain was a guy ran a generator about all night and kept everyone awake.  The thing I learned is tent camp away from Rvs.

LOL... I did revel in how easy it was to pick up your gear and move it to dry land...that small depression below grade really filled up!  :)

I started out simple for years...sleeping on a foam pad in the back of my F150 8' bed truck with cap... till one year it rained every shoot and in those days I did 2/month starting end of April

I bought one of those canopies... Bear to set up and put a cot inside and my breath condensed inside and I awoke to drips thinking the tarp covering leaked..nope. Sold it.

As Uncle ARty Ritis came to visit and never left, I bought an Apache hard side pop up...no rag to dry out...loved that thing... 2 burner stove dried out the interior and on cold weekends, it warmed up to skivvy temps quickly.

I had at first a 12x20 silver tarp I set up over a 2 table kitchen, then a 12x16.  Did a lot of cooking with and for friends.

Still have the gear, sold the camper, but found a lot of people would get under my tarp and litter the place after I went to bed in inclement weather...Changes in who attended, I guess.

Went back to a more minimalist format .

Had a 2 burner Camp Chef stove, couple of Dutch ovens, a small table top 2 burner bernsomatic stove, Trash bags hanging around (that were invisible to the litter bugs), table top grill, LP lamp, etc.

Made the 4 day camp outs feel like home...till it didn't!

This is our set-up. 12x12 Alaknak, pop up shelter over the kitchen area, and you can see our shower enclosure under the pop up as well. This was at Denton Hill a few years ago.

Where was the shoot in northern NY?

The shoot in New York was Oxtar......near Norwich.

Wow, you NY guys sure have a funny definition of northern. To us, it's everything above Lake Placid.

Pete's from Westchecester Co. Everything is North for him....   :biglaugh:   ...I had to drive 2 hours south to go to the shoot. It's actually in central N.Y.

Saving grace of being that far south is that Westchester County is a bow only suburb about 50 minutes north of NYC. Some big suburban deer down here.

I have a 6 man tent. I enjoy being at a shoot when able.
There are many well minded children which it as it should be but then,
There are some that are turned loose..
Dog poop is a problem sometimes.
