For the last few years I try to do a thread on bow stand names. Sometimes the name is based on a location and sometimes it gets a name from success or game seen from it. I love the great names and the explanation for it. I'll start. Please chime in, usually it's great fun. Please post the reason for the name.
Thanks
Granpa a huge old buck was shot from the stand
Triple tree a ladder stand in a triple tree trunk
Second thought. A stand put up after thinking about a different spot for it
Lower Mossy Knoll / upper mossy knoll. Two stands on an above a creek we named Mossy Knoll
Spoon. It's on the lip of a bowl.
-
Chime in please...
-
The bowl: several small finger draws come together in a "bowl".
Poacher's stand: a poacher used this one to shoot a young doe.
The narrows: timbered draw comes up close to an old timbered fence row with 20' mowed area in between.
Four corners: four property corners meet here.
Below the dam: wooded draw below the pond dam. Lots of good stand trees here.
Middle earth: small open field/plot in the middle of 40 timbered acres.
Will likely think of a few more later.

Hey Rick,
How did the stands get their names ?
-
The Roost
Acorn Ridge
The Bend
Creeky
Plot Stand
-
The Triple, shot three deer out of it the first morning I set it; The funnel, where a ten acre bedding area narrows down to forty yards and follows a creek (numerous bucks taken from it); The original stand, a natural funnel where I put all my friends for over twenty years, it accounted for over sixty Deer (two triples) and an elk; The Alley, an eighty yard road through some trees/bedding area connecting two hay/grass fields; The Corner, where two fields are separated by a fence and intersects another fence that boarders a bedding area.
-
Death Trap-old rotten wood stand nearby
Toy Truck-rusted toy found at spot
Junk Car Stand-ditto
See The Truck-it was close to where we parked
Lance's Tree-my son in law always stands there on deer drives, so far he's missed three. :)
I don't hunt from stands anymore. I had dozens of named spots at one time, these are the ones that come to mind.
-
Well it's not a tree stand , it's a stilt house that was on the property when we bought it .
My wife calls it "The Doll House" .
And so do I , the name kinda stuck .
It's what I hunt from when it's nasty weather .
-
The hickory tree, for obvious reasons
The bars, next to a wood rail gate
Teh dump, next to the old farm garbage pit
The stone fence, again for obvious reasons
The knob, the highest point on my grandfather's farm
The berry patch, near a thick patch of blackberries
-
"Yellow Fly". I hunt in Florida and the deer flies SUCK ! (Literally). I hunted in that stand 3 years ago and needed a blood transfusion after an evening hunt. Thermacells do a great job on Mosquitos but don't do crap for yellow flies.

Crow's Nest (Piece of plywood wedged in 3-stem "fork")
Elm Tree
Hackberry
Graveyard (found homemade tombstone AFTER hunting here)
Walnut Bottom
The Island
Maple Stems (killed 265 field dressed from this one)
Connie's Possum (opossum joined friend's wife in tree)
As you can see, most of my names are based upon the species of tree (one of my degrees is Forestry)

I'm calling one I'm working on this year the "Holly Stand" for two reasons. It's a brush blind that's about 15 yards from a large holly tree that has had as many as 5 scrapes under it at one time in the past, and it's built mainly from holly limbs I cut from other smaller hollies scattered around the bottom it's in.
Some others:
The New Road - Timber company built a new 40-50 foot wide road before cutting a tract of pine. that was 10-12 years ago, but it's still the "New Road".
8-point stand - We killed two 8 points on it the first two years it was hunted.
Woods Lane (Actually multiple stand locations) - A 600yard long seismograph lane that has been kept open for 20+ years. It starts at the corner of a property belonging to the Woods family that borders our lease.
Camo Blind - made from a camo tarp
Missed Buck Stand - Ironically this stand has earned it's name multiple times.
Penn Oak Flat - pretty obvious, but it's only about a 40yd x 40yd patch of hardwood surrounded by thickets.
Stubby box - When we first got this lease, the previous hunters left a wooden box stand at this site. It was a 4'x5' and only had about 3' legs. It was built out of rough cut cedar and had I think 6"x6" posts for legs. It definitely looked stubby. It's no longer there, but the name stuck.
-

Yukon Ridge- a ridge off of Yukon Road
Nocked Up- a tree right beside it that has a growth on it that looks like a 9 mth pregnant women
Roadkill- a killer stand right next to the road
Rimfire- on the rim along a ridge.
Cont'd. bw
-
Oh, I almost forgot.
The Buzzard Stand - This involves a wooden box stand that was turned into a buzzard nesting site without our permission one year. We brought it out, cleaned it with bleach, repainted over the inside and finally managed to get the smell out. We put it back on the lease in a different place, and the buzzards found it again the following year. It's also been replaced with a newer stand now, but the last location where it was used is still called the Buzzard Stand.

-
One thing about stand names is a buddy knows exactly where you are with no lengthy explanation.
We had one guy several years ago that took five minutes to tell you where he would be hunting. Go down the logging road east and the first trail on the right, go across the creek.....blah, blah, blah.
I have an aerial map of the property in the cabin with all the stand names on round pasties. It is really handy. Plus its just fun naming them. Sometimes they get a name immediately after getting set but sometimes it takes a while.
Another one we have is Bulls eye. Had to trim off a limb so you could stand and the inner part of the limb looked like a bulls eye.
There is also a field corner, dump stand, coon tree, wooded food plot.
-

Middle Earth. On the center of our property

Barry,
I remember one year my dad and I were hunting in Iowa with you and my dad was hunting in the "whorehouse" as it was a great rutting spot. We were in the diner and my dad got some strange looks when he loudly said he wanted to go back to the whorehouse again the next day
-
Yes.. I remember the whorehouse... but don't quote me on that. I won't mention any names but I was walking a guy into that stand to sit when we jumped a 250"+ (yes, 250 inch plus with five drop tines.. the farmer found the sheds)100 yds. from the stand. The stand covered the only gap in an internal fence. The bowhunter had a week to hunt and he shot a 116" buck the second morning and went home happy. ???? bw
-
Hey Barry Wensel, you crack me up! :biglaugh:
-
Kill-all stand.... Bucks, does, coyotes, squirrels have died from this stand.
Nosebleed stand... sits on the edge of a creek bank. Looking down into the creek, it looks like it's 40' up.
Walnut grove... stand sits in a walnut bottom.
-
This year I have 2 areas I will be hunting on public land. both areas have a couple trees to account for wind direction.
Parking lot, 4 minute walk from the parking lot, can practically see the lot and definitely see hikers walking past.
Gun Funnel. its a loooooooooong walk in but next to a rifle range. Its a small hill that leads to a swamp and the deer seem to walk the bottom and top of this small hill. Just went back and decided to rename, Pressure point. Activity gets better after hunting pressure starts.
-
I have hunted a lot of fine properties and some not so good over the years. Some memorable stands are:
The kilin' tree- I can not begin to guess how many deer were shot from this setup that was at the bottom of a finger that stretched down into a white oak bottom and ended about 30 yards shy of a creek crossing.
The hog graveyard-I found an old hog skull in this spot and ended up killing several hogs within spitting distance of it over several seasons.
The honey hole-I have actually hunted a stand by this name on multiple properties, but the one that comes to mind was on a farm in Edison, Ga where a narrow strip of woods separated a CRP field and a hay field.
Doe Hill-My dad killed a doe on this stand the first time he sat there and the name followed.
The white oak stand-I have never seen so many white oaks in one spot before or since.
The newbie stand-This was a stand that we generally held out for kids or new hunters. Deer sightings were a guarantee.
The birdwatcher stand-pretty obvious name due to the number of birds that you could see from this stand. This spot was the reason that I started carrying a camera to the woods with me.
-
my climber is currently set up at the 'water rat hole'. it overlooks a waterhole in a river and every time i've sat there i've seen a water rat swimming there.
another spot i call 'the hourglass'
6 trails from a hillside converge into 2 trails in a draw, 10 yards apart then fan out into 6 trails again on a river flat.
'like deer through the hourglass, so are the days of my life' :biglaugh:

Sam, I'll just say it's my favorite stand. ;)
-
Ground and Pound Stump's Landing for one.
-
Swamp Funnel- Where game crosses a little finger of swamp between the high ground.
Spruce Stand- In a thick spruce stand where the deer feel comfortable all day.
Scrape stand- Over a giant scrape that is there year after year.
Beaverdam Funnel- between a road and a beaver pond where the beavers have knocked down a ton of trees in a large area. This forces the deer into a narrow strip of timber. Just found this one late in the season last year and am really excited to hunt it more. Saw a buck there five minutes after I set up the stand.
-
My Friend got me into naming stands. Good Idea.
The Apple Stand Is in a small orchard.
The Honey Hole is near a small food plot.
The Fence Blind is a ground blind on his property line.
The Skull Stand is Where we have a deer skull hanging in a tree.
The Bench Stand is on a bench that the deer like to travel.
The Ridge Stand Looks over a main food plot that is 100 yards away.
-
Uncle Barry is a hoot! there is an underlying theme to his stand names :)
A year or two ago one member had a stand called the Orphanage. I asked him what the explanation was and he said a lot of does have been killed from it.... :)
-
My best bear stand is called " man eater ".
-
I hope there is a story behind that name !!! Hope nobody died.

Taint (like your "taint") this stand is in between 2 other stands
Treehouse
High line
Corner stand
Africa Blind
Back Fence-line
Living room

We named a stand once. We called it the "Sunday Morning" stand. It was closest to the house and thus, we knew we could hunt it on Sundays before church.
-
No not yet, lol. But it in a really thick area surrounded by a nasty swamp. When walking to the site it's very Erie . I started calling it Man Eater when my brother drew a tag. He was very nervous to say the least. He had never been bear hunting before , so I thought I would help him out. :) On the way in to the spot some crows flew off the bait and about give him a heart attack. He did get a nice bear that night. I bet he mad it back to the truck in record time that night. lol. He said all he kept thinking about was the name.
-
A couple more come to mind:
Maple tree - one of the highest, flimsiest, most frightening and dangerous stands I have ever been in.
No Sight - goes back to my handgun hunting days. I had a buck come in right under the stand, but when I tried to aim, I found that the rear sight had fallen off my pistol.
-
Not mine but my favorite stand name on the Zwickey packs forever...probably goes back to the 30's I'd guess.
"Down log blind at Misty River".
Sadly it's not found on the new packs.
-
A couple more:
Other Man's Blind
Old Man's Tree Stand
Skinny Joe's Spot
Big Boulder
The Fort
-
I have probably 3-4 dozen different locations that hold true year to year. I may not get to some because of wind but the one ridge I can count on every fall I refer to as "The Bedroom" I never go in until pre rut and they always seem to be there at some point during the season. It's a 1.5 hour walk from my truck and I get in about 1 hour before daylight and the bucks always filter through off the grain fields coming to check for estrus doe. I guess if I had one day to hunt it would be that area.
-
The Bread Paper Stand was named by my grandpa. He had his lunch in a bread bag one day while hunting from that stand. At that time bread bags were made of paper, I guess. A big buck snuck up behind him when he had his hand in the bottom of that bread paper sack reaching for a sandwich and he spooked the buck.
-
The Magic stand always see deer there, side winder on the side of ahigh hill. looking down.
-

Thanks for sharing

Dirty Underwear - Not mine (LOL). This is a location close to a roade deer often cross. One day there was a pair of tighty whitey briefs hanging from a tree which could be seen from the road. I can only imagine some poor soul running from his vehicle with an urge and had an accident along the way. The deer didn't seem to mind.

Either that or your stand was where some other miscreant wanted to hunt, so he THOUGHT he'd ruin it for you by leaving a calling card to drive deer away.
We've all heard the horror stories of people evacuating themselves under or IN someone's stand...
Bad sportsmanship abounds... but then, it didn't work out that way so no harm, no foul and I'm just guessing.
