This last 5 or 6 weeks before the NY bow season starts, I'm chomping at the bit. Aside from my Widows, I've been shooting a couple of my Bears. Thats all got me wanting to see some vintage pics. Got any??

Good lord Mike, what's the length on those horns??
55". Put I'm sorry for posting that recent pic. Its obviously not from the '80s. I seem to have trouble with photobucket with all the pop-up ads. Mike

don't worry mike, i think the kudu photo is still relevent. the horns look to be in the '60's'.
:biglaugh:
Dang, those are some cool pics! I can't post any though, because the only pics i have before the mid 90's are fishing. Man, I wish someone had introduced me to trad archery about 20-30 years sooner than they did!

Great pic Mike, when I started this thread, I had an old picture of Gene Wensel in mind. He's dragging a nice buck away from the camera. I'd love to see that one get posted!! :bigsmyl:
The photo you are talking about Sean was the cover shot of Gene's first book. That's actually me dragging his buck away from the camera. October 1976. That picture also made the front cover of Bowhunter Magazine back then. It was a fluke because I didn't even know Gene took the picture as I was dragging with a little cheap 35mm camera. But everything was in focus and it came out well. Now you know the rest of the story. bw

Thanks UB, That's probably why I had it in my head that it was Gene!! That was always my favorite picture.
I love these threads. These types of photos are the reason I got into bowhunting and more specifically trad-bows. Keep them coming guys!

In September of 1965 I took a fall and shattered my wrist requiring a full length cast. I devised a way to shoot my bow with my foot and managed to get in a lot of hunting time hunting from the ground from brush blinds. Being low to the ground I had to clear a shooting path with a hand cycle. I didn't kill a deer that year but I had a lot of exciting close encounters.

Thank you much Ghostbow. Shady Side is in southern Anne Arundel County, surrounded by water.

The trouble with this old timer was I didn't take a lot of pictures back then. Cameras were awkward and bulky. The place I hunted was a military installation and no cameras allowed so no pictures for 25 years. Couldn't even have one in the car. I'd give my right arm to get a do over on this.
Great thread, awesome pictures, thanks for sharing

What a great idea for a post. It caused me to open up some old photo albums and spend a couple hours with my wife reminiscing. I found a couple of photos from back in the day. I had to scan the photos as they were taken with a Polaroid.
This one was my first deer and first bow kill. 1969 at Quantico Marine Corps Base, Virginia. I was 15 and used a 45# Shakespeare Necedah and Herters aluminum arrows tipped with a Bear Razorhead. I still have the bow and a few of the arrows. I was hunting with my uncle the last 2 days of the season because my dad had to work. This guy had walked under my stand the previous morning and I passed on the shot looking for something bigger. The next evening I couldn't hold out any longer. I was way up in a wooden stand and shot him from near vertical. He went 25 yards and piled up with a double lung shot. I still remember vividly when I took him to the game check station on base a couple other guys came over and started razzing me for shooting Bambi. The game warden shut them down asking, "Where's your deer... besides when they are that small, they are harder to hit." The little button dressed out at a whopping 32 lbs and was great eating.
You can barely see what is a tree stand hanging in the tree in our backyard. My grandfather was a blacksmith in Kansas and my dad asked him if he could make a portable stand. This contraption was it. It was made of heavy angle iron and was so heavy and unwieldy that we ever took it to the woods and only used it to practice shooting from an elevated position in the backyard.

Nice pics stinger. I sure wish someone had introduced me to archery and bowhunting at the age of 14 or younger, but I did not get introduced to it until I was 22 years old, and I have never looked back.

Tony, I've seen your posts and your pics and you have more than made up for not starting as a kid. I also wish I was back in your neck of the woods for the upcoming deer season. I miss the whitetail hunting out there. I used to keep my boat in Galesville just down the street from where you are. Deer hunting in SOCAL is tough. The drought hasn't helped much. You certainly have to work harder out here just to find an animal.
Tony,Wicomico County for me, Delmar-just a spit over the Delaware line.
Hey Stinger, as they say this is a small world. You mentioned you kept your boat in Galesville, well Galesville is my hometown, and I still have family there. Thanks.

Hey Sean, yes I've had a few bows in my time. But I have also gotten rid of quite a few of them over the years. Matter of fact I still have some that I have to unload.
