With any luck, I'll finish with my obligations in time to fling a few arrows this evening! :archer2:
pics? :coffee:
I spent a quite a bit of time last night attempting to post pictures. Alas, to no avail. My wife has posted a couple pics here for me in the past but, she couldn't remember how she did it. I'll continue to take pics of groups and such. Who knows, perhaps sometime in the near future, I'll accidentally stumble onto the secret of posting them.
I do know this though, the Black River bow is a SHOOTER! And SO easy on the eye...
TKO how is the grip?
It feels kind of like a really good revolver grip. A slight palm swell and the throat is small enough that I can touch my index finger and thumb while gripping the bow. My hand is just a shade under 5" wide across the palm but, my fingers are short. I'm guessing it's about a medium as for wrist height. It is a much more comfortable and natural feeling grip than my Super Necedah. Almost like it was molded in my relaxed hand.

Can't wait to get her in my hands! Pics are easy here. You just have to have a photobucket or imgur acct, and then copy and paste the img link.

I'll be trying again tonight. I got a few more pis from some shooting this evening. I do have a photo bucket set up and the pics are there but, when I copy and paste the link, it doesn't work. If push comes to shove, Manolito (Bronz here on TG) is only about 20 minutes away and tech savvy. I may attempt to enlist his assistance... Ah Hem... Hint, hint, Mano... :help:
Manolito is a good guy for sure! You have to copy/paste the img link. It is the bottom one of the 4 choices you have.

Here's a comparison between the Black River and my Super Necedah.
And, the other side...
(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab62/tko68/Black%20River%20Bow%20Aug%2025%202016/20160825_162015.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/tko68/media/Black%20River%20Bow%20Aug%2025%202016/20160825_162015.jpg.html)
After a couple of warm up shots with the trusty Super Necedah, I shot a couple of bare shafts and found that arrows were fairly weak. However, the fletched shafts seemed to fly fairly well at 10 yards so, straight to 20 we went. This was the very first 20 yard group using the Black River with the hybrid limbs.
(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab62/tko68/Black%20River%20Test%208%2024%2016/20160824_170728.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/tko68/media/Black%20River%20Test%208%2024%2016/20160824_170728.jpg.html)
The bow felt absolutely natural in my hand. It was very smooth with no discernible hand shock and not a hint of stacking at my 29" draw.
Here's a couple more pics of that first group.

Not the tightest group I've ever shot but, I am extremely happy with it considering this is my first time with the bow.
Did you get the pic thing figured out, or did you have to call in Manolito???
That bow looks awesome! I am so ready to give her a whirl.
Also, what arrows are you shooting? My DL is 29" also.
Bisch
I forgot to mention, the first shots were taken yesterday, 8/24/16. I got started late due to other obligations and then my range time got cut short by the arrival of torrential rains and very high winds.

I didn't have to call Mano. I must have been using the wrong link. I did as you suggested and it worked first time. Thanks for that!
I'm using Easton, 2018 Legacys, 3 5" parabolic feathers, 30" from nock to back of point with a 4" foot of 2216 and 175 grains up front. They bare shaft perfect out of my Super Necedah at 50# but, I had to build the shelf out almost 3/16".
The Black River shot so well at 20 yards yesterday that I went right to 30 today. As my groups will attest, I very rarely shoot 30 yards on the range because I have a self imposed limit of 20 yards for my hunting shots. If conditions were perfect, I might reach out to 25.

The Super Necedah was feeling neglected so, I flung a few at twenty just to let it know I still cared.

It shot this nice group to assure me it was still up to the job despite it's age, which I've been told is somewhere between 43 and 45.
The weather cooperated this evening so, I was able to shoot close to 100 arrows with the Black River. This bow is an absolute joy to shoot. Although it's hard to tell from the photos, I stayed on the range until it was almost too dark to shoot. I finished this session with a final group at 20 yards. I was getting fairly tired by this time but, I think the group is still respectable.
(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab62/tko68/Black%20River%20Bow%20Aug%2025%202016/20160825_200927.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/tko68/media/Black%20River%20Bow%20Aug%2025%202016/20160825_200927.jpg.html)

Today, I woke to rain, which lasted throughout the morning.

Fortunately, by this afternoon all that remained of the storm were these puffy clouds.
(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab62/tko68/Black%20River%20Test%208-26-16/20160826_161102.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/tko68/media/Black%20River%20Test%208-26-16/20160826_161102.jpg.html)
So, I rushed home to swap limbs on the Black River riser.
I got to the range and shot this 5 shot group cold at 20 yards.

The Black River was stacking them in until I dropped the last shot. I think I got excited and was attempting to watch the arrow strike. I could kick myself... This was the first 25 yard group with the recurve limbs.
Feeling like I couldn't miss with this bow, I moved on to 30 yards. By this time, the range was getting a little crowded with people attempting to get their equipment squared away for the upcoming deer season. In an effort to be courteous to the other archers waiting to set their 30 yard pins, I rushed slightly and, unfortunately, my groups show it.

Feeling a little frustrated with the growing crowd (how dare they encroach on my public archery range), I decided to pack up and call it a day. As i started to step into my Jeep, I looked to the east and was reminded again what is really important...

BTW Tom, those are some great pics accompanied by scripture!
I was able to get the bow out after mowing the lawn to fling a few. Unlike some guys, I don't have a host of different arrow spines laying around so I can't show off groups like Tom did!

Couple of humble observations after shooting...
I agree with Tom that the bow is narrow through the throat with a nice palm swell and thumb groove making each grip repeatable. Unlike Tom, my hands are small... I should have been a plastic surgeon...
I'm a recurve guy, but decided to bolt up the hybrid limbs first given the 48# is closer to my preference of near 45# weights. My upper body musculature matches my hands... I enjoyed the draw cycle and lack of noise even with the wool silencers.
After a dozen arrows, I switched over to the 50# recurve limbs. I was surprised to find that I preferred the recurve's draw cycle to the hybrid's. It was a thing of beauty! I didn't feel 50# at 28" and it was easy to notice the slight let off at the terminal phase of the draw-- an easy indicator of a well made bow.
My gear has to be as attractive as it is lethal and this bow lacks nothing in the aesthetics column! If I was placing an order, the ONLY thing I'd ask for is a little more radius to the shelf. I'm a sucker for bocote and the swirled grain in the recurve limbs was worth staring at for a while.
It may be naive for me to say, but it appeared to have a thin layer of cork glued to the limbs where they bolt to the riser. I can imagine that this would limit some of the creaking I've heard from my 3-piece from time-to-time.
I'm going to return to searching the couch cushions in hopes of generating enough capital that I can begin persuading the Mrs to let me call Black River. If you're in the market for a new stick before deer season, I'd give some serious consideration to one of these.
Thanks again Tom for offering to put me in the rotation today!
God Bless all and good luck this season!!
-Manolito
I agree almost completely.
I don't think I've never held a more beautiful bow. The limb wood is phenomenal and the lines of the strung bow, in both hybrid and recurve form is almost mesmerizing. The form of the limbs meld with the curves of the riser and gives the bow a soft, organic, semi-fluid look. I found myself getting a little distracted from shooting because I couldn't keep my eyes off the combination of wood and curves. Had I never launched an arrow, I'd have likely declared the bow a winner.
But, I did shoot close to 200 arrows over the last few days. I can say with conviction, I have absolutely never shot any bow, traditional or compound as immediately, exceptionally well. I've also never shot a bow of this quality. The first 5 arrow group out of the Black River left no doubt this bow is really on another level. Smooth to my 29" draw with no hint of stacking and no discernible hand shock. The bow shoots so well for me, I would feel completely comfortable hunting with it tomorrow. It took me well over a month of shooting my current bow daily before I felt half as confident. I believe I'd have never wondered the dark road of compound bows had I started my archery journey with a Black River.
I can't get over the astonishing, graceful beauty of the recurve. However, the hybrid actually feels like a natural, biological extension of me. If made to choose, form or function, I'll reluctantly choose the latter. Fortunately, the hybrid configuration is graceful and beautiful in its own right. Either way, you cannot loose.
Whoever said, "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all" obviously never loved and lost a Black River bow.
Cant wait for my turn, what kind of arrows were you guys putting through it?

I ran Easton aluminum 2018 Legacy, 30" with a 4" foot of 2216 and 175 grain point. It was actually quite weak but, that's all I have at this time. I wish I had some 100 grain points but, I'm guessing they would have still been a little weak.
Sounds like you men enjoyed the bow in form and function.Very nice looking piece of work.
The cork gaskets are nice to have on a 3 Pc.Thin Rubber gaskets work very well to boot.As you would expect
They can quieten a bow.But one of the main benefits IMO is it keeps moisture from getting between the riser and limb butts. You dont want moisture sitting in their believe me.I made my own from rubber.I have had other bows supplied with cork from the bowyer. Its a good idea.
Look forward to seeing some more reports.Have fun :)

The bow is on its way!
Enjoy!
Thanks TKO, I'll let you know when it gets here.
I hope you enjoy it as much I did!
Great looking bow!
That's a really nice looking bow! I should have gotten on the list to give it test run :knothead:
.
It's gonna be a long day at work today!
Got home yesterday and the bow was sitting on the kitchen table safe and sound only problem was I didn't get home till late so didn't get a chance to play with it. Well I made up for it today and I will say TKO was right on the money about how shooter friendly this bow is with either set of limbs if deer season was open here I'd have no hesitation talking this bow hunting after only one day of shooting it.
Both limbs draw smooth, perform excellent, and are quiet. The riser is a little bigger than I personally like although may be part of the reason the bow is so stable. The grip is very consistent although I would prefer a little less in the palm.
The craftsmanship is amazing probably the best looking limb tips I've seen.
Overall after only one day with her I'd say if you like a 3 piece bow with a little physical weight to it that performs with the best of them without giving up anything in terms of shootability and is quiet you will love a Black River bow.
Shot the bow again tonight and man this thing is just so easy to shoot it's unreal but time to send it on to Graps in the morning.
Did you prefer the recurve or longbow limbs?
TKO, I'm a recurve guy but I actually preferred the hybrid limbs on this bow. Smooth as butter
QuoteOriginally posted by jt85:

What is your draw length? I draw 29" and I preferred the hybrid limbs also. Bronz preferred the recurve limbs and I think he draws 28".
My draw length is 27 3/4"
The bow is on its way to Graps
.
.
That stinks Graps if I was you I would probably come down with a case of explosive diarrhea in the morning!
.
Yeah Graps if a Black River mosquito bit you I would advise you to lay out the rest of the week.
.
.
.
Graps, an interesting observation about the limbs. What arrows are you feeding the bow? Look like woods?
.
So I wonder how my 2114's will work? But if push comes to shove I have 3 sizes of carbons to try. One of them will work.
I want to see what I can do with the bow be on 30 yards. Let's me know how it casts an arrow. Old time way of judging a bow maybe but it's a ton of fun!
Nice cluster of arras Graps!
Good shooting Graps! My turn is coming up fast!!!!
Bisch
.
.
.
Graps what exactly do you mean by can't get the recurve limbs to calm down? I also enjoyed the hybrid limbs but had no issues at all with the recurve limbs so I'm just curious. I shoot split finger and thought the bow was completely shock free, quite and fast.
.
I think it is more of a tiller issue. The limbs are tillered neutral but depending on excessive heal or Palm pressure it can change the timing of try limbs. I noticed no shock at all as I was shooting, but everyone shooting style is a little different. Never had anyone say like a hill style bow before however.
I'm wondering what happened here???
It appears a serious amount of editing has been going on?
But if someone compared one of Will's recurves to a Hill style bow I would have to imagine they are doing something wrong or smoking the wacky.
But like I said, I am clearly coming in post editing...
cant wait to get a hold of this beauty! thanks again Will for being so generous and letting us all have a go with this one!
Well, I wonder what graps said?????
QuoteOriginally posted by iohkus:

I can't read what graps said either but, I can tell you, I shoot 3 fingers under and both the recurve and hybrid limbs were absolutely smooth shooting. I wonder if it might be a brace height or arrow weight issue?
why is every post from graps gone?
Like others, I cant read a thing from graps either, so who knows?.... But I certainly believe every person has a right to their own opinion involving equipment.
Well, the postman just handed me the box about 20 minutes ago. I have already been in the back yard! :goldtooth: :goldtooth:
I will most likely only mess with the longbow limbs, as I am a longbow guy, and with my recent arm injury, the recurve limbs will be a bit stout for me.
After about 10 minutes of getting aquainted, this is what I am getting at 15yds:

And this is the only group I have shot at 20yds (it is HOT outside, so I decided to wait till later when it cools off):

My point of impact is off a bit from my point of aim, but that is to be expected with a new bow and more pounds than I am used to.
Initial impression is smooth, quiet, and fast. The fast part may be due to the fact that it is 3# more than I am used to???
The mass weight of the bow seems heavy to me (but that is because my goto bow has a lot smaller riser, and a lot lower mass weight).
I am pleased after 30 minutes, that is for sure!
Bisch
That new dymondwood from Mike at rosewood is definitely some heavy stuff. It will add a good bit of mass weight to a riser!
Nice shootin Bisch!
Like I said above, I am 99% a longbow guy. This bow is a real beauty, and I would think anyone who likes a recurve style handled longbow would love this bow!
Bisch
The bow is on its way to M60gunner in AZ.
I feel this bow is a great bow. I only shot the longbow limbs, but it performed well, and fit and finish are excellent!
Anyone looking for a recurve style handled longbow should give this one a try!
Bisch
I got the bow about an hour ago. My wife and I are impressed with the wood combos and the workmanship. I strung up the recurve limbs and made BH at 8". I did have to raise the nock point. That may change when I shoot the bow tomorrow. Same with LB limbs. To me the grip is fine and I am picky about grips. It feels much like my Hoyt Excel grip which is a medium.
I am taking a few different sizes of arrows to try. Carbons and alum. Might try my currant woods as well. They might be over spined. We'll see.
Will update tomorrow.

Geez, I am so glad to read this post! Tracking says it is in Pittsford, NY!!!! Had me all worried. Tom and Will, disregard the PM's I sent y'all!

Well shucks, instead of shooting this fine bow this AM I am typing on my IPad. My fuel pump decided to take a dump on me last nite at father in laws place. Be tomorrow before I can get it repaired.
I was able to shoot a few arrows in garage at close range. Looks like my 35/55 GT's will be what I try outside.
Just got back from range. Put about 200 arrows threw bow, recurve and LB. Those recurve limbs shot my 35/55 well but I did better with my 2114's. Both weight the same so it probably is me and my "form". I was able to get good flight from my 55/75's as well. Just a little loggy past 30 yards.
Let a couple others guys try, both said how smooth the LB limbs are.
All in all a well made bow. I really enjoyed my time with it. It will be on it's way tomorrow AM.
Thanks for letting me try the bow. Sorry no pics, me and Photobucket, Imgur have issues with IPad.
I am adding more to my review.
I believe if I had a doz new carbons and started from scratch bareshaft tuning I would have done better than I did with the variety of arrows I used. That goes for the recurve limbs especially. But that is to be expected with recurve. Recurve has always taken me more effort to tune arrows to. But that maybe me and my form or lack of. My 35/55 weight 500 grains, a touch over the 10 grains most guys seem to like. The bow I think likes the heavier arrow as there was no noticeable ark at 40 yards. The bow does point well and when I did my part I had no issues hitting 40+ yard targets. I had the brace height at 8". I wonder what others used? Only change I would make is a different string material for the recurve limbs. Agian just my preference but I like BCY X. It does not stretch in the heat. The grip fit me like the grip I have on my Hoyt Excel so I had no issues settling in. I assume it is a med grip?
I thought this bow came with BCYX strings?
They are both with BCY X strings. I have messaged him and will gladly send a new to the next person.
Tom said the LB string wasn't stretching like the Recurve string was, which shouldn't be happening seeing as they're both the exact same.
Whoever is next on the list, if you have the same problem, I will just send a new string. It COULD have something to do with the AZ climate, but then I don't understand how it isn't happening to both strings..
Bow is on its way. It supposed to be delivered Saturday.
I believe that I am up next and will shoot the bow on Sunday. I will most likely send to next lucky guy by Wed. or Thurs. so if sending a new string send it to the person after me. I will let you know if I have any string stretch. Thanks!!

Jack,
please do let me know about the string. Thanks.

A request was made to edit the title of this thread in an effort to make it a little easier to follow for those interested. So, I fumbled my way through the process (my first edit) and it appears I got it done. I hope this works for everyone.
I received the bow in near perfect condition. (Edit: noticed very minor wear mark on riser and a scuff on top longbow tip) Shot a little Sunday and tonight. Full review to come and it will be in the mail on Wed to John in Ohio.
DanielB89, there is no issue with the string. I left recurve strung for quite a while and it did not move at all.
Easy shooting bow of very high quality. I like it!!
My Black River Bow Review:
I have had time to shoot the recurve and limbs enough to really get to know the bow. First let me say the quality, fit and finish is very high and just as good as any high end bows on the market (better than several). I was impressed with the craftsmanship and not a single imperfection in the finish.
Grip is pretty nice and it fits well in my hand. The bow is very point-able and has a generous sight window. Nice size 16" riser with good weight without being massive. Riser and limb fit seemed very precise and tight. I like the thin piece of cork between them.
I shot the hybrid longbow limbs first. I thought it was very quite and I got dialed in fast and had nice arrow grouping. 60" limbs were very smooth at my 28" draw.
Next was the recurve limbs. Again great performance and no hand shock. It seemed like I shot the longbow limbs just a little easier naturally though.
I stopped by the archery shop yesterday and put both set-ups through the chronograph for the heck of it.
Shot both bows with Carbon Express Heritage 150 with standard insert and 145 gr. field point. I believe the recurve limbs are 62" and 50 lbs. and I got between 176-182 fps. The longbow limbs are 60" and 48 lbs. and I got between 172-178 fps. To me the hybrid longbow held up to same performance as the recurve. (diff. in fps is assume with my form or slight change in draw).
HCB were both fine strings and I had no stretch measured. I left nock height as it came to me and put recurve BH at 7 3/4" and longbow BH at 7 5/8".
Overall, I was very impressed with the bow. If Will brought his bows to Compton, ETAR or K-Zoo he would be a very popular guy! If you like ________ bows (insert most high end 3 pc. bow names here) you are sure to like a Black River also.
Thanks to Will for letting me shoot the pass around bow. It will be on the way to John in Ohio tomorrow morning.

Thank you!
Jack,
great detailed review! Thank you for letting me know about the string!
Any update on this?
Bow was received by #8 on the list on Monday and confirmed by PM here. That is all I know. Hope others post their thoughts on the bows.
I am very impressed with the craftsmanship and finish of the bow. I pretty much gave it a head to head comparison with my current go to hunting bows which are a Silvertip and a Talltines. The bow with the Hybrid limbs is a knockout and a pure shooter, smooth as silk on the draw with a slight thump on release. It is a natural pointer and I could have taken it out the night of try out after just 3 arrows and been very confident. The recurve limbs seemed to load up with a steady gradual increase in weight out to my 28" and had a bit of zip. It seemed as though they were significantly faster than the longbow limbs but I have no proof. I shot with both heavy 62# woods and 500 FMJ's and it liked both equally well with the woods being slightly quieter as would be expected. I shot the hybrid limbs much better than the recurves for whatever reason. As far as a comparison to my other bows, It is a lot like my Tall Tines with the RC limbs and the grip is almost identical. The craftsmanship is as good as many and better than most. I would be very pleased to be the owner of this bow and would highly recommend it. It is definitely on the radar for my next bow. Especially the hybrid!
She is off to Utah for the next try out.
Thanks to Will for allowing us to go for a joy ride on one of his bows.
John

what's going on with this?
Ttt
I shipped it to screamin and he PM'd me that he had received it on the 8th.
Pastor Steve received it on the 13th.
I liked the recurve set up the best, much better performance than the longbow limbs. Draw was very smooth to my 29" draw. I chrono everything I shoot and the recurve limbs perform right up there with my Olympic carbon foam ilf limbs. I like the added weight of this riser design, it really helps hold on target and if I do my part, I could group arrows in an 8" circle at 40 yards. Very nice easy shooting accurate bow.
Please let me or Will know what is going on with this bow. The point of doing a pass around bow is for people to post their reviews, whether it be good or bad. Haven't had an update in 5 days and don't know who has the bow.
PastorSteve is in the process of sending it to me.
Sending it today!
I liked every aspect of this bow/s..
Great Grip/ solidly built/ shoots great/ great workmanship/ Performance is top notch... A+ on every level!!!

With much regret, I must say when my turn comes up, please pass it on to the next lucky person. I would be unable to shoot the bow at this time. Many thanks to Will Cocke for this generous opportunity.
awesome, when you get the bow, please remember to post your feeling about the bow. I'm not one who likes to always hear "it's great". Give us some detailed critical responses if you will. What did you like? not like?
Any reply is greatly appreciated.
Dang, Cant wait for my turn, what kind of arrows did you run through it pastorSteve?
Bow arrived today but too dark to shoot it by the time I got home. Doubt I'll unpack it tonight, just wanted to give you guys a quick update.
Finally got to shoot the bow (both sets of limbs, about 12 arrows each) some this morning before work and if you're excited about your turn with this bow, you should be. I'm gonna shoot the bow some more today and tomorrow to get more familiar with it then I'll send it out Saturday.
Good to hear Paul! I'm not on the list this time, but do plan on signing up for the St. Jude bows that Will has graciously volunteered to do.
Just by looks alone I can tell that a quality bow!
I am very impressed with how well put together this bow is. It is extremely well crafted and as good as several high end bows I have owned...Will has some serious
talent.
I didn't have much time to shoot both sets of limbs so I went with the recurve limbs since they initially felt better for me. I also used one of my own strings on the bow. Nothing wrong with the ones provided, I just didn't feel like messing with the double nock setup on the string provided....one was brass and the other was a big ball of a tie-on nock. I always go for a brace height on the lower side of what a bowyer recommends and this bow shot good for me at 7 3/4". The limbs were really stable and quick, quiet, smooth...everything you want in a bow really. Grip was very comfortable and filled my hand nicely...as good as Will seems to be with his hands, he should consider learning checkering ;) The riser has a nice heft to it that makes it stable to shoot and easy to point. I found the bow easy to shoot and would have taken it hunting his weekend with confidence.
All in all, this is a fantastic bow. There is really nothing negative or critical to say. The only thing I would add would be quiver inserts so I could have a side-mount quiver. It would be cool to see different length risers and limbs offered too. By the way, I absolutely love the look of the bow and the glass on the limbs is the clearest I have ever seen. Great job on the bow Will, I seriously may order one from you one day. Thanks for the opportunity.
The bow is being shipped to Hermon today....
Thanks for the reviews. Keep them coming.
Checkering is coming soon, recurves and hybrids come in a 14,16,and 18" riser. Bows 56-66"
Longbows 16 and 18. 58-66"
I have had the pleasure to shoot the pass around bow the last few days. As has been stated by previous reviewers, the fit and finish of this bow is top shelf. I will agree with Paul that the glass on this bow is extremely clear.
The bow is very shooter friendly. The grip is very comfortable and torque free. Coupled with the heft of the laminated riser material made for a very accurate, easy to shoot bow.
I am a longbow guy at heart so it was no surprise to me that I preferred the longbow limbs. The recurve limbs didn't disappoint either. The recurve limbs felt to have a lot early draw weight which no doubt contributes to the speed of the bow. I had to jump up in spine when shooting the recurve limbs although there is only 2 pounds difference in weight between the two sets of limbs.
I really was intrigued by the design of both sets of limbs. Hopefully Will can share some comments on his design.
The only thing that I would like to change is a slightly longer sight window. I'm sure others get along just fine with this bow, but I think l would prefer his long riser (I measure this riser at 16").
I would like to thank Will for allowing me to have an opportunity to shoot this bow. I will get it packaged back up and on to the next person this weekend.
Do we have any updates?
Ttt
I'm the next in line to try out the setup..Black River bows. I'll let you all know....when I get it:)
You'll have it in a couple days. More than likely on Friday.
Big Ed
Here is my honest option on the Black River Bow:
First off I would like to thank Will Cocke for the opportunity to give his bow a test run.
Upon receiving the bow the first thing I noticed was the quality of the veneers are top notch with great character throughout. After assembling the bow the next thing I really liked was the mass weight and the grip. The fit and finish on the bow was among the best that I could compare it to. The first limbs I shot were the longbow limbs which I found to be very accurate and stable. But after putting the recurve limbs on I would have a hard time switching back to the longbow limbs. The recurve limbs are super smooth and very efficient. Great cast and absolutely send a heavy arrow with authority.
All in all I would rank this bow right up there with the best of them. I surely will own one in the future,
Big Ed
Oops double post!
The Black River Pass around is on its way to ghall80(Gary Hall).
A BIG THANKS to Will Cocke for the opportunity to try out the Black River bow(s).
Although,I've just tried the Hybrid setup; I have to agree with what all the guys are ravings about... how awesome Black River Bow is. The whole package is there and it's a pretty well thought out project(s): The workmanship is outstanding and a remarkable mild manner shooting bow....that is fast and accurate. >>>>----->

Received bow today and will post review later tomorrow
My Black River review
I got the bow and right away put together the longbow limbs, I really wanted to see this set up more than the recurve. And the first thing I can say is his veneers are awesome and the glass was perfect the combinations he picked out was beautiful. But when I put it together for some reason it just didn't look right to me. The bow shot great looked attractive but with the riser just screamed recurve. And this is not a negative hit on the bowyer at all the design to me seems to look and feel the best as a recurve. I know Hybrid bow are supposed to be both I just could not get to like the longbow setup. But it shot very very well, no complaint on the performance at all. No hand shock it put arrows done range with some power and speed.
When I put the recurve set up together that's when I said yeah now that's a bow. I always look at a guys limb tips to see quality and these are super nice limb tips they are perfect. These veneers are even better looking than the longbow veneers and those were super nice. Now this is when I could really see Wills craftsmanship come through on this combo. I am making a set of arrows that would match this bows dark woods , a little creative inspiration happened while shooting this bow. The riser has a lot going for it grip is great the mass weight was nice to have, bow just plain old shoots good. Didn't need to change much I had a few arrows made up and the bow grouped them down range with no issues at all. The bow performed great and feels like high-end bow for sure. I wish the recurve limbs were about 55lbs to really see the power.
(http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w372/ghall80/image1%206.jpg) (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/ghall80/media/image1%206.jpg.html)
But the recurve to me really seemed to look, feel and shoot better than the longbow did. The only thing I would like to see would be a better transition in the limb bases to the riser. The bottom limb looks great but on the top limb one side is squared off. With a riser like this with all the cut outs and radiuses put in I feel it would look even better not having that one side squared off. I love to see bows with a top limb and bottom has perfect placements in the riser that flow together like one piece of wood. But this is a cosmetic thing only and I would prefer a bow that shoots good then looks good any day.
(http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w372/ghall80/image2%203.jpg) (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/ghall80/media/image2%203.jpg.html)
Both setups are fantastic Will does an awesome job and really looking to see more from him for sure I am not sure now what to do defiantly need to get on the horn with Will and talk bows. I truly had my mind made up on another bow but this has got me thinking again
Excellent bow and thank you for the opportunity Will
I find it interesting how some love the longbow set up and others the recurve. When I had the bow i liked the feel and performance of the hybrid best. These reviews are proof the "perfect" bow depends on the shooters style and preferences. One things we all agree on is that its a great bow.

I personally think its kind of cool how the top limb is asymmetrical, just aesthetics though like you said, I'm not sure I would have even noticed if you had not brought it up. Good review.
Do you think it was the hefty riser that kept it from feeling like a longbow to you?
Possibly for me just didn't feel right but felt great with the recurve
Still waiting to hear back from Larryf bow is ready to ship back out
I just emailed you.

So, in 1 month time we only moved 2 people? Larry should have it and see is waiting. See maybe Pm Larry or contact Will. Other on the list will like it when they get there chance. Good shooting!!
Hey guys, I'll take a pass and remove my name from the list. I signed up for the hope and faith and "hope"fully I'll have hope around the same time I would get this pass around. That will help move things along a little.
Where is the bow? Guys lets get this thing back on track. Keep he bow 3-5 days and get it en route to the next person. It's been awhile since any feedback was given as well. The holidays are over so let's get it rolling again. Thanks Will
Still not heard anything
Has anybody contacted Larry to see if its been shipped? Seems he had it last based on the above post.
Anyway can't wait to hear more about these bows :readit:
See... the bow is in the mail.
Anymore reviews on the bow? Larry what did you think of the bows, did you find the recurve or hybrid limbs better for your situations?
Some have stated one or the other as being smoother, but it seems to be a "your mileage may vary " deal.
Anyway looking forward to your inputs as I'm sure Will is to.
Being a Quality Assurance inspector I know how important feedback is as this would allow him to make any changes that may be needed, thanks.
And if you haven't been keeping up with the St. Jude bows take a look at what Will has generously built for this years auction
I did not get a chance to shoot it as our temps were -10 to -25. I did un pack the bow and put it together, it sure felt nice in my hand. I liked the way it felt when I pulled it back. It arrived while we were gone to Denver for Xmas. when we got back it was really cold out and had no place to shoot it.
Oh man I hate that was the way it turned out :( that would be a bummer to have that in your hands and not be able to enjoy the full pleasure of shooting it.
Did you think about signing up for the St. Jude bows? May be a way to try again and add a hunt to their adventures.
Can a person still get in line to try Wills bow?
Don,
Sir look for the St. Jude bows sign up. There a roster being created to hunt with the bows over the next 18 months.
Will has created a RH and LH bow for this purpose and at the end of the cycle they will be auctioned off in support of St. Jude Children hospital.
Guys I received the bow yesterday on Sat.
Was able to shoot the recurve limbs last evening
And shot very good, hitting right at my aim point.nothing was included suggesting the Nick pt and brace height so I'm playing with it. Also which of the 2 strings are suggested for the matching limbs rec or longbow. Its crafted awesome. The riser has great weight and the bocote limbs are to
Be envied by any trad bowman. I am getting a little arrow slap but not too much noise with goodies alum
And carbons. Gonna touch base with the owner to get his take on where to start with the specs. So far it a fabulous bow to my liking.
Its Fri and time to send to Pops. I thank Will for the opp for all of us to shoot his bow. I got the specs from him and things got better.
1. Bow is a beauty, riser has beef to it and limbs
Are Incredible
2.the longbow limbs shot better for me even though
I'm a recurve guy. Was esp surprised to find this
Out. I have always shot and liked the feel of rec
Over longbow limbs and I've shot bunches of bows
3. The longbow was really quiet. I'm gonna name it
Will cause this is true- it's a Creme Puff,
Extra smooth and creamy delivery of the arrow
And extremely quiet
The rec performed well for me and had more zip but
Not as quiet and smooth
The veneers were beautiful on both sets.
I was clearing a wood pile lot to stack my wood and
Stuck a small nail in my forefinger of my drawing hand.it did not keep me from shooting. I learned something from this: what finger pinch is.
When shooting the rec my finger would hurt. Angle of the string was much more pronounced
When shooting the lB there was hardly any finger pressure to cause me pain on the end of my forefinger.
I don't know the prices yet but would have to consider one in the future.
Thanks again for letting me have this experience.
Dwight,
Thanks for the review!
I get my chance in June with Hope one of the St. Jude gals
Just got the bow today, off to the club
to give it a try.
Well, my time with this bow has come to a end.
I after reading all the positive posts I have a big
negative one. I don't want it to go. This bow is
awesome!!! from the grip to the way it casts an
arrow. Both the recurve and longbow limbs are
great. The bow is a winner.
Was curious what specs are the longbow limbs and what arrows you guys found flew best with it!
I was using cx150 with 145gr and wood 60-62 with
125gr. The bow is 62" & 50#
OK I had my chance to play with the bow this week. Man the pics don't do it justice, absolutely beautiful. First impressions Will is a true craftsmen. I was really looking forward to shooting the longbow limbs, and they did not disappoint even at my 30" draw. The recurve limbs were smooth as well, and delivered the arrow with a definite thump. Overall I was very pleased with both sets of limbs. If I had to choose one set, well I don't know which ones I would choose. Oh who am I kidding just order a set of each!!
Will thanks again for the opportunity to shoot it.
Got the bow today ,fit and finish is gorgeous and perfect .I've handled many high end bows and this one was top shelf imo.i checked weight on my draw machine and will is pretty dang good..Recurve is labeled 50@28 and on my digital load cell showed 49.9 @28 on the money ..The longbow limbs were labeled 48@28 and they showed 48.2 @28..I strung up the recurve limbs first as I'm a recurve guy and absolutely loved it,I played with it 3 under and spilt and was shooting great groups both ways .I draw 31 in and there was no stack on the bow @62 in ..Very quiet and dead in hand ..Then I shot a 528gr be vintage through crono at my draw and was really surprised..At 31in it was 56.3 pds and shot 201fps..I've seen some carbon limbs barely do that ..Super impressed with this bow.
Then stuck longbow limbs on and ran few shots and felt just as good .Could tell as expected not quite as fast but was really dead in hand ..At my draw was 55.8pds,it shot the 528gr arrow at 193fps..I even busted a nock @20 yds .
Had couple guys come in shop tonight and all loved how it felt .Will will probably be hearing from couple of them soon .I'll be notifying next in line in next day or so.
Can someone post link to thread with list of guys to receive bow.search function won't find it anymore

That's the only regret I have about this pass around bow. The guys that draw only 27-29" are not anywhere near reaching the potential of the bow. However that is the only way to build it to accommodate all draw lengths. For a guy that draws 28 a 60" bow would be a much better fit or a 62" with tip wedge and powerwedge lengthened to make a shorter working limb.
Great job lately on the reviews look forward to seeing and hearing more!
Well the bow arrived today and it didn't take me long to put the longbow limbs on and string it up. Like said before many times, the craftsmanship is second to none!
I tried my 1535's with 250gr up front weighing in at 515gr that I use with my longbow but they were a little weak out this bow. So I grabbed my 5575's that I shoot with my recurve that have 250gr up front and weigh in at 550gr and they hit spot on.

I then switched to the recurve limbs and shot the 5575's out it and they were hitting where I looked as well.

Both sets of limbs were smooth and very quiet!!!
Now for the bad, for me the throat of the grip is a little too thick and it's kinda uncomfortable after shooting a while but I'm not a big guy with big hands therefore I like a small grip on my bows. Nothing I couldn't fix with a file :)
Can't wait to shoot it some more tomorrow
Corey,
Can you take some photo's tomorrow while gripping it? Just for size comparison.
Would like to see how big or small the grip looks. Its hard to tell without anything for reference.
The riser looks big on top of your deer, unless that's a Louisiana deer, then I understand :goldtooth:
Thanks

Corey,
is this a blob target in the first picture?
Yes Daniel that's the Blob I bought at the Tennessee Classic last year. I like it!
My first four arrows of the day from 15 yards, Loving this bow man!

Does look a little stout in the grip, but seems to shoot well for you.
Hey Corey, skip me and go to the next guy on the list. I got to shoot Daniels a few weeks ago and I'll have a chance with hope as well.
Throat on the pass around is about 4 3/4 I think. The pic above is at a angle that makes Riser look really big. I am a 6 ft 1 in. guy with normal hands and I actually ordered my Black Riser with a 5 in. plus throat. Will can customize grip some which is nice. To each their own.
I liked the grip as well and I am pretty anal about grips. I am big (to big) but have smallish hands as well.
Thanks Corey,
Nice looking grip and can see that it's designed to get your hand in a position the same way every time.
And with Will being able to customized it, shouldn't be any problems accomdating different hand sizes.

Will do Randy
Bow has been shipped to Pheonixarcher
I was able to make one hunt with the bow, and like many hunts I saw no deer but enjoyed our time together.
Thanks to Will For the opportunity to shoot one of his creations.
Corey
Tracking number says it'll be here Friday. Can't wait!
I was on deck after Pheonixarcher, I am going to have to withdraw from the batting order. Wonderful opportunity, I have some stuff going on that will require all my attention for a bit..
If you would Paul, go ahead and send that off to Petep next.
I must apologize for my lack of communication this past week. I had a terrible bout of stomach sickness last weekend, and had to work 60 hours this week.
I did receive the bow last weekend, and was able to shoot it some before I became ill. I will give a full report after I send the bow off to PeteP. Hopefully I'll get it packed and shipped tomorrow, but most certainly by Monday. Pete, I'll be sure to forward you the tracking number. Again I apologize for keeping everyone in the dark. That is not my normal practice.
Again, I must apologize for my tardiness here. My co-worker whom shares a great deal of my work load has been on vacation, and I've had to work long hours to get things done on time. In hind sight, if I'd have known that the bow was going to arrive the week he was gone, I'd have passed on my turn with the bow. It will however, be shipped tomorrow.
All that aside, I was able to spend some time in the evenings with this bow.
I will agree with most of what has already been said about this bow. The fit and finish is good. The craftsmanship is also good. It is obvious that there was considerable thought and effort put into the design of the package. As a whole, I believe that this is a platform that has lots of potential. I only draw 27", so I was nowhere near the optimum draw length of either set of limbs. But they both performed rather well. I had to step up in spine to get close to proper arrow tune with both the hybrid and recurve limbs. I have a few arrow set ups that have been quite tolerant of similar draw weights, and I was surprised to see that they showed weak. A sure sign of good performance.
I typically shoot both hybrids and recurves, so this bow is right in my wheel house.
As far as the recurve limbs go, I feel that they are top notch in feel and shootability. They were a tad louder to me than some of my other favorite recurve designs, but only marginally. And likely remedied with brace, string and silencer optimization. I really enjoyed their smooth draw and performance.
The hybrid limbs were a little closer to my comfort level for everyday shooting. My observations closely mirror those of the recurve limbs. They were great performers comparatively speaking, and balanced well. They too however, were a tad louder to my ears than comparable hybrid limbs. Again, likely fixed with brace, string and silencer position. The draw was not as smooth as some, but smoother than most. A great feel for a hybrid longbow.
The riser, while well crafted, was large and heavy. It almost seemed as though it had too much mass in the limb pads. And that was greatly amplified with the heavier and wider recurve limbs. For this reason, I much prefered the overall balance and feel of the lighter mass weight hybrid limbs. For me, the grip was comfortable and repeatable, but it was too deep back to belly, and a touch too narrow side to side at the throat/thumb ledge. All in all though, a good and adaptable shape.
While both sets of limbs were ran through the gamut of brace heights and shot with light to heavy arrows, I did experience a bit of a buzz after the shot. Not at all unpleasant, or excessive, just a little surprising given the overall mass weight of the bow. Don't take away the wrong impression with that last statement! This bow is still smoother than any one piece or small risered bow that I have ever shot, just, I have a couple comparable bows (that are super tuned) with much less mass weight that have the same or less buzz at the shot. It just surprised me a little with this much more mass in the bow.
Overall, I would rank this bow towards the top with its competitors. With this particular bow, I preferred the overall performance and shootablility of the recurve limbs, but the balance and pointability of the hybrid limbs. With a much lighter mass weight riser material, I think this would make an excellent recurve in every category. But the hybrid also leaves very little on the table. It is a tough choice, but my nod goes to the recurve.
looking forward to shooting it, thanks again Will for this opportunity.
The bow is on the way Pete! Thanks to Will for the opportunity.
got the bow yesterday...first initial impressions when taking her out of the box were whoa, what an absolute beauty!! i'll shoot her up this weekend and get back with my findings
I would like to remove myself from the pass around list. Things are really busy here lately and my draw is a little short for this bow anyway.
Have fun Pete, excited to hear your thoughts.
alright, the black river...first impressions as i took the riser out of the bubble wrap were I need to call Will and tell him I want this bow. Wow. Wow. Did I say wow?!! Man what a beautiful piece of functional lethality. The riser is dense, heavy and feels bullet proof. I absolutely love the curves, contours and overall feel of this riser. When you grip the bow it just has "that feeling" to it...you stickbow addicts know what i speak of.
The recurve limbs, oh my, these things are gorgeous! I could see myself 20ft in an autumn tree just looking at these beauties. When you view the strung profile you know youve got a hot rod on deck. The draw is smooth and I loved the feel as i locked into my anchor, just a solid feel. I knew i was about to unleash some serious power as i loosed the goldtip traditional 400. The sudden WHACK on the bag target confirmed what you already knew just looking at her...shes fast!! These pass around reviews, i enjoy reading how we all have a slightly different take, experience and view of the same bow. My take is this...id hunt with her right now. This is a very easy bow to shoot. I like a heavy, solid bow. If you like a larger mass riser such as a silvertip, tall tines or predator then your going to enjoy this bow. I loved the grip, its just so easy to find that spot on the target. I've either had or shot most of the big names. This bow is right there as far as fit, finish and performance of the top bows. These bows will have a following of loyal shooters, I'll be one of them. Thanks Will, what a great bow!
Dewey11 Steve, i'll send ya a PM and get your address and send her out thurs AM. Thanks again Will!
I received the bow last week from "kleine" and shot both the limb set-ups that same day. What can I say that hasen't already been said? Beautiful workmanship all round and "yes", love the grip. The draw weight (a little heavy for me) plus my shorter draw length, I'm sure, hendered max. performance, but I still enjoyed shooting both limbs. Maybe because the long bow limbs were a lighter draw weight, I enjoyed shooting them the more. Both limbs powered the arrows I currently shoot in my personal bows straight and true. (Beman Centershot 500's) For me, best consistent results came from shooting the bow without canting. Actually, the bow is a whole lot better shooter than I am! I think I would favor a lighter riser weight, but that is just personal.
As a BTW, the recurve string gave way (half-into) so I made a new one out of B55, so any future shooters who want a FF will have to aquire one on their own.
Enjoyed the bow very much and would like to thank Will Cocke for the oppertunity.
The bow will be on the way tomorrow to Steve Dicketts. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. :clapper:
I had this bow before Iohkus, all I can say is what a shooter!
I'm not use to a larger heavy riser bow but it fit me very well. It draws super smooth and hits hard. Fit, finish, and craftsmanship is excellent. I spent most of my time shooting the recurve limbs and couldn't believe how well I was shooting with it. If I owned it I would defiantly be proud to hunt with it.
Thank you Will for the opportunity,
Hope you don't mind, but seen where a new thread was started on the review and thought I would move the review here to keep things together.

Just wanted to thank Will at Black River bows for the opportunity to shoot the bow. Thoroughly enjoyed shooting the bow. My preference of the two limbs provided was the longbow limbs. No shock or vibration. The string on the longbow was B50. The recurve (FF string) had a little vibration and had some noise where as the longbow didn't. I was told by Will that the bow was made for a 30 inch draw. My draw wasn't long enough to get the optimum performance the bow could provide. But wheather or not my draw was getting all the performance it could, it was flinging my arrows (GT Expedition Hunter, Easten Carbon Raider, Redhead Carbon Fury) faster than my bow. Pleased with the overall craftsmanship, riser handle feel and special designed limbs.
What's the latest status on the pass around bow? Been nearly a month without an update?
Hope the pass around is working like it should and Will is getting some inputs [saywhat]
I know I appreciate his willingness to put it on the road so it can be tested and others like me can get reviews (good or bad) and hopefully Will gets critiques (good and bad) to improve his products.
Lets keep this going, please.

I've had faith this last month and posting on the other thread.
Any updates?
