Title: New arrow advice GT trad/ CX heritage
Post by: bagada on August 23, 2016, 08:50:00 PM
Im about to be ordering new arrows and I don't want to make a mistake. Here are the factors.
-My full draw is a little over 31 inches, therefore cutting arrows is not an option. example below is a 32in full GT trad 340
 (http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j6/nightkid696/Screen%20Shot%202016-08-23%20at%202.11.19%20PM_zpsrawrtya7.png) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/nightkid696/media/Screen%20Shot%202016-08-23%20at%202.11.19%20PM_zpsrawrtya7.png.html) -
My arrows are showing just "slightly" weak with a 200gr point which puts total weight at 559 grains.
-my bow is 50 pounds at 28in so I must be pulling just under 60lbs Therefore I am under 10GPP.
-I want to be somewhere in the 11-12 GPP with a decently high FOC. HOWEVER, I only hunt GOATS, PIGS, and smaller animals.
_My bow shoots very smooth and quiet even with the sub 10 GPP arrow
-Im using the GT insert weights to tune.

My questions are the following.
- Im I going overkill aiming for a high FOC, 11-12 GPP arrow setup? I want my arrows to be as deadly as possible but for goat sized animal? maybe overkill.

-Will I gain spine stiffness by moving to the CX heritage 350 shafts? therefore letting me use my GT insert weights and gain more FOC and overall arrow weight.
do the GT weights even work with CX inserts?

-I know that CX Heritage are slighlty longer at 32 3/4 inches. Maybe I can cut them to 32in and be able to add weights to the insert. will the 3/4 inch be significant enough to add say 50 to 100 gr.

BASICALLY
SHOULD I stick with GT trads and a 200 gr point or should I get CX heritage and tune for more GPP and FOC?
WIll it be worth the extra cost?

You'll probably get more and better advise.  But, here goes.

Since your arrows need to be so long, they shoot weak.  Because of that, you need lower spine arrows.  Say 3Rivers Traditional Only 300 instead of GT Trad 340.

A problem:  The stiffer arrows must not be selling well, because manufacturers are slowly eliminating those stiffer arrows.

Anyway, Easton makes The Axis in 260 spine, and some other arrows, GT Kinetic are 200 spine.

I use Stu Miller's calculator to help with all this, and for a long draw length it's tough.

Oh, yes, one other point:  3Rivers sells tube to insert into your arrows to increase the weight.  They work well.  Plus, there are other self-help methods of inserting things into your arrows to increase the weight..

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard about the weight tubes but the OCD in my wants to add any additional weight to the front. In fact the OCD in me wants an arrow that will have complete pass throughs 100% of the time.lol. I guess Im just obsessed with making a really deadly arrow. specifically penetration wise. I already have my 200 grain grizzlies razor sharp, now i need to figure out the rest of the equation. Since Im saving money for a trip, I may just go with the "blem" GT from Big Jim and try CX Hertiage later when funds permit.

Okay, then.  To put all the weight up front, you need stiff arrows, as the increased point weight makes them act weak.

I'm not a carbon shaft expert but, you might look at footing. Although it appears you only have about an inch of available real estate, it could slightly stiffen the shaft and add a little weight to the front end. Plus it makes the front of the arrow stronger.

I just put a fast flight string on and now Instead of slightly weak spine, my arrows are showing very weak. I guess Im gonna be forced to buy the CX heritage. Or one of the other mentioned brands.

I know your pain! Build out your strike plate and you can stick with your current arrows, they are way more than lethal as they are if you get them tuned! I used a piece of thick leather and Velcro on top of it.

Thinking of getting the traditional only's in 300 spine. That way I can add weight to the tip and still get good flight. Im gonna order the carbon collars as well since I heard these shafts arent very durable.

another plus to ordering the trad only's is my current carbon collars and nock collars will fit them so I save 20 bucks.

I think BigJim pulls 32 inches at 68 pounds and uses .340 spine arrows. I believe he uses 300 grains at the end of his arrows. Maybe he will see this thread and help you out.

If your goal is getting a pass thru....I dont see it not happening with your current setup. Especially if you're using grizzlies.
I just came back from Africa a week ago.
I shoot a 55@26 recurve (I draw 26")and shot a 565gr arrow. (100gr insert and 175 grizzly)
My first animal was a wildebeest. Quartering away shot at 22 yards. Low and tight in the shoulder, came out in front on the opposite side.
the arrow did not go all the way thru. But got two holes one one of the toughest plains game. I was truly impressed.

Bagada, first of all I commend on being obsessed with a lethal arrow, we all should be and most are. I use GT arrows and ended up fine tuning them with GT nock adapters, they will accept GT weight system weights and work really well to keep my weight tubes from pushing my nock out on hard impact, the nock adapters are reasonably priced, I believe $13 a dozen...

I am almost positive he shoots .300's.  Which blows my mind.  I have shot them out of bows with much less weight.  I know now that I was WAY over spined,  but am basically still in the same boat. lol

Daniel...I think your right. BigJim shoots the new GT Trad "Classic", in .340 spine and the GT trads in .300 spine. Both with 300 grains up front.

car 54, Thats the exact setup im aiming for. 300 grains up front give or take. I also built up my strike plate to where my arrow was just almost falling off the shelf and it did help a lot. However, It wasn't enough for my goal setup. So either way I need .300 spine. Now I will use the strike plate trick as one more tool in my arrow tuning. Thanks for the tip guys.
