Title: Three new arm guards - let me know what you guys think.
Post by: tomsm44 on August 21, 2016, 03:58:00 PM
I've posted a fair amount of my work on here before, but since it's usually knives/sheaths, it's usually over on the knifemakers section.  Over the last year or so, I've branched out a little from just doing sheaths for my knives to doing some other leather projects.  Since this one is archery related, I thought I'd see what you guys thought about and maybe get some feedback on what I could do to improve.  I've already got plans to change up how the cords attach so that the knots will not be visible.  I also may try to figure out a simple adjustable paracord (or other small lacing) system to use instead of the elastic shock cord.  Anyway, here's what I've got for now.  Left to right:  7" 3 piece version with tri-weave tooling and black/mahogany two toned color, 5 1/2" one piece youth model with my daughters name and a couple butterflies tooled on it and dyed mahogany, and a 7" relatively bare bones model.  Let me know what you guys think.

Very nice work Matt.
I like the one on the left.
I actually prefer the shock cord on mine.

I like the elastic shock cord.  Not a fan of antler buttons.  Looks cool but easy for a string to catch.  I like the left one.  Nice job.

I like them all, but I would suggest leaving the elastic cord long. I made mine so I could REALLY lengthen them out to accommodate a winter coat during Michigan's winters, or tighten them up for hot summer days. I just tuck the excess length back under.

I like them all, especially the smaller one for your daughter.  I don't have a problem with the string hitting my arm, so smaller is better for me since it's primary purpose is limiting clothing obstructions.  Plus, it's much cooler in the hot weather.  Antler buttons are nice, too.

I really like the radius in the back to shorten the attachment area.  I tied the shock cord on one side and put 3 buttons on the other. I like the looks of the shorter attachment and your cross over  single point hook up. I hit my arm pretty frequent does you method keep the rear of the guard tight to your arm? Thanks     Ken

I like them all and the center the best.  Great design.  Like others have said I really like shock chord for armguard, quick on and off, and easily adjustable.  If you decide to sell any I will definitely buy one.

Thanks guys.  Several good ideas here to consider if I build more in the future.

Jake,
I'm not currently selling anything.  I've considered becoming a sponsor on here before to try to sell some of my knives, but I don't have a lot of time to devote to building them so I haven't taken the plunge yet.  I'm trying to refine a few leatherwork designs because it doesn't take nearly the time a knife does, and I've gotten to where I enjoy working with leather as much if not more than knives.  Once I'm confident enough in my work, I may try out becoming a sponsor and selling a few.  I've got plans for a couple of quivers in the future, but it'll probably be several months still.

I like them all. I too like the shock cord the best.

With you new design to hide the cord just make sure they are still adjustable. Once again, they're all nice!!!

Nice work.  You might consider making some that use the 'hook' system (like criss-cross lacing a boot)...I find them to be very secure and easily adjustable for bare arm to heavy clothing.

I prefer a leather boot string that can be adjusted and tied or just jammed iwhen adjusted.. to elastic. Leather's also better than fabric boot laces because it holds without tying and ties more simpply if that's what I want.
